Look at this, it appears he wasn't as highly rated as others, mainly Rance, and to a lesser extent (position wise), Myers and lolwaitforit, Henderson.

i may be wrong but i thought he was drafted a year younger wasn't he? myers is 1989 he's march 1990.

I'd just like to bump this, to remind the haters of the taste of the egg that's going to be on their faces this year.
The ones who suggested we trade him.
Fools.

If Pears can recover that sort of rebounding play I really, really want to see him set to play as the second small/medium defender (behind Hibberd).

It would give us amazing flexibility and solve some of the kicking woes without creating any problems for our midfield (by freeing Goddard, Heppell and to a less extent Myers), without requiring any further trade action and it will allow us to ensure that we do not lose any defensive ability.

I've always said that Tayte Pears will be a better player for us than Hurley. With Hooker coming back next week it will free up Hurley to go forward which will help us out so damn much. I'm looking forward to next week.
WOW

Yeah, it was a big call but for some reason, I still believe it IF (big if) he can get fit and play with the confidence that he did in his first two years.
I think Pears is classy enough to become a two-three time AA. I would also expect Hurley to do that as well.

If he plays to his full potential, I totally agree.
I'd say the same thing about Jetta though too.

The amazing thing is that he was so incredibly good in his first crack at it. In particular, his decision making and skill execution was first class. Very rarely missed a target or made the wrong decision. His form this year is like opposite day. Completely 'deer in the headlights' with the footy in his hands... Real hold your breath stuff.

We can only hope that he gets over this bad run and builds on what is an unquestionable talent base.

I want to see Pears play on the medium forwards. Not the huge power forwards or the zippy goal sneaks. He'll be able to match them in marking and his offensive work will either exploit them or keep them on their toes. I'm thinking of players, both current or past, like Darling, Crameri, Hahn, Johnson, Edwards, Fev, Bradshaw, Pavlich .. ect ect. Hooker can take the big gorillas or we could decide that Gumby, Crameri and resting ruck is enough height up forward, as well as Daniher potentially getting games, and play Hurley down back and he takes the gorillas. Carlisle is the tall rangy player who can play on a small in a pinch or a resting ruck plus his great hands and judgement will make him a third man up that will actually mark rather than just spoil. This is the definition of the Fletcher role, except that his disposal isn't in the same league as dusty. However, with Hurley's elite kicking coupled with the run and accurate kicking, if short, kicking of Dempsey and Pears we'll be able to cover the loss of Fletcher's disposal.

Of course Hardingham will be much more effective once the midfield is working harder defensively so that there will be more high balls coming in allowing him to use that extra ordinary jump to spoil. He also has the pace to go with most people and very good body strength too. The only issue of course is his disposal and that can be worked around if there is an effort to never isolate him with the ball nor choose him as a target when trying to freeze the clock, in that situation he can always push forward to assist if we're forced to kick long down the line to a pack. Hibberd can be the number one lock down small defender that can also provide drive from defence and Dempsey has improved the actual defensive side of his game since the change in coaches and can work hard to keep someone like Garlet in check yet then expose and defensive lapses by them.

I really think that a premiership backline is:

Carlisle Pears Hardingham
Hibberd Hurley Dempsey

I also think that Gumby, Daniher and support from Ryder playing as 2nd ruck and Crameri as midsized forward will provide a nightmare for oppositions to defend and they are mobile enough to not be exposed to much by attacking defenders. Winderlich's pace, leading and long kicking makes him an upgrade on Monfries as the 4th/defensive forward. To couple with that defence I'd love to see a forward line of:

Jetta/Davey Gumby Winderlich
Ryder Daniher Crameri

A midfield with nine of Watson, Goddard, Stanton, Heppell, Zaharakis, Myers, Hocking, Howlet, Kav, Colyer, Browne, Ross and Merret.

Personally I would like an inside group of Watson, Myers and one of Hocking, Howlet and Browne. All round class of Heppell, Zaharakis and Goddard. The out and out game breaking run of Stanton, assisted by Heppell who will be an elite runner. I would also like to see Kav be the inside/outside player that was suggested he could be to assist that part of Zaka's game. Not sure how we do it or who misses out but I'd like some game breaking pace on the wings, the sort of pace that Ross, Merret and Colyer can bring.

Well shouldn't you be bumping a thread where people are hating on him?

I bumped to remind people who have non stop been calling for his head of exactly how good this kid can be.
Don't worry, come round 10, 2013, I'll be bumping the other threads where people wanted a trade for him.

This thread is evidence of how good Pears is?

Really gets my goat when I hear fellow supporters calling for the heads on players that, for a knowledgable football observer, are clearly good. Reminds me of a certain ex bomber now All Australian/Premiership Swan, that was touted as useless

If only Teddy got the same opportunities as Tayte !

just caught a replay of the Essendon v Carlton game from earlier this year on fox..... although i enjoyed most of it i couldnt escape noticing how bad Pears was.. he got pantsed by Waite...big time, and even when he did win the ball he dwelt so long that he either messed it up or put a team mate under undue pressure.

man i hope he can get back what he had... he wasnt league standard this day.

Confidence. He's head****ed, doesn't trust his body. Too many stops & starts, too many injuries, playing hurt etc. He has still showed a few glimpses of form, mainly through Bendigo, so it's still in him, just not coming out.
He's in the same (mental) hole Myers was in 2-3 years ago.
What he needs most IMHO is just to get a good run at it. Give him 6-8 weeks at Bendigo, with no pressure on him, and we'd start to see the old Pears back IMHO.
