The 2014 TV Ratings thread

Channel 7 is set to cover the Victorian Football League next season in a move that could boost the network's chances of broadcasting the WAFL.

No deal has been signed between the network and the VFL but negotiations are understood to be significantly advanced.

The VFL's move to Channel 7 would mirror the arrangements in South Australia where the network has returned strong ratings in the first year of its SANFL coverage.

does any one know how it works over in adelaide with 7 showing the SANFL?

hopefully it all does go ahead, you would think it would give the old VFL a bit of money. That hopefully flows down to the traditional vfl sides competing against the AFL sides. as some of them have folded in recent years due to lack of money

7mate show 1 game a week on sunday. However the SANFL have to pay the production costs - production is done by McGuire Media.

It is understood that Eddie McGuire's media production company will be involved, and it has been reported the deal will cost the SANFL about $850,000 a year before sponsorship and advertising.

I doubt it's a 'mistake', but the difference between 85k and 130k in Sydney is literally a few ratings boxes. Maybe a few bandwagoners attending their first Swans game for the year also had ratings boxes. Or maybe a few flicked over to the NRL when they realised it was a close game.

Foxtel wouldn't help the FTA ratings in Sydney either given it's where their highest market penetration is.

It has been pointed out in the past that free TV outrates pay TV in Sydney by a big margin

GWS enjoyed a historic win over Sydney Swans but only 63,000 people in Sydney watched it, just 1.3 per cent of the metropolitan area’s 4.6 million population.
The GWS-Swans game attracted 20,000 viewers on Fox Sports and another 43,000 on 7Mate.

There was some consternation when Seven also chose to show the GWS-Swans season-opener on 7mate last Saturday night, leaving those without digital TV unable to watch the Giants' historic debut. Despite blanket coverage in Sydney, the match attracted an average audience of just 119,000 (82,000 on 7mate, 37,000 on Fox Sports).

That does show that Sydneysiders are more likely to watch the game on STV than the rest of Australia.

Sun TV #VFL Grand Final ABC Melbourne 198k
Sun TV #WAFL Grand Final ABC Perth 109k
Sun TV #SANFL Grand Final Seven Adelaide 129k

Last year's Hawks v Cats GF rated 123k (with an attendance of 15k - the biggest attendance this century until yesterday). It's been reported that yesterday was the biggest VFA/VFL crowd in 25 years so it's probably the highest rating VFA/VFL GF in that time (and perhaps ever).

7 (and the AFL) will be thanking the good lord that the Swans are in as it will boost the numbers and should see it take the "highest sporting event on TV" mantle from the current clubhouse leader being SOO Game II. And just on that...can't wait for the AFL Grand final to go twilight or evening in the next deal to make it somewhat more of an apples v apples comparison.

On a similar note, I predict the NRL grand final figures will be down on last year given it will be a guaranteed all Sydney final with no local teams to provide a boost from QLD or VIC

Difference of 60K.
given that footy ratings have also dropped in WA since footys been thrown on 7Mate Serious questions need to asked about putting games on 7Mate.
How often does a QF outrate a ******* prelim?

The cynic in me believes 7 are doing this on purpose with a new rights agreement coming up.

I'm surprised the AFL hasn't done anything about this yet. Ever since All Queensland, NSW and Most of Western Australia's Games have went to 7mate, ratings have dropped significantly.

Brisbane and Sydney Were always guaranteed to get between 100k+ regardless on form, but the lions can rarely crack 50k on 7mate these days. And the Swans while doing much better, should be doing even more better, based on their form.

Games being on 7mate in WA just doesn't even make sense at all. Consider it is an AFL state.

yeh, but don't you know ric and sue? you cant move ric and sue on a Friday night for AFL live footy from 530pm?
I would have thought that 7mate would have games live, and 7 primary channel would continue to show it on delay.
so Friday night would have 530 on mate, and 730 on 7 - that way, those that are home and want it live would watch mate, those who work normal hours and are unlikely to change habits, would watch it as usual at 730pm.

sat and sunday games on mate doesn't make sense - they should always be on 7. no ric and sue on weekends.
