A recalibration of the "2015" figures might be in order.

Top 20

Probably another 4 AFL games to insert in there before the finals finishes. possibly cricket world cup finals, and upcoming Rugby world Cup matches.

Okay, not trolling here, but for all the chest beating by Richmond supporters, their game was the weakest TV audience. In fact the only all Victorian game was the weakest audience. Maybe something for Simon Lethlean and Ch 7 should consider going forward.

Sunday afternoon is the weakest time slot though, hard to compare directly to the other ones. It is why there wont be any Sunday finals this week.

Rubbish, Saturday afternoon is far more of a deadzone. That's why 7 are ditching it in their next TV rights period and why the NRL don't even bother scheduling any games then at all.

The difference is about 20-30k in favour of Sunday Arvo for both FTA (194k to 227k) and Fox (149k to 171k). And most of that gap is fixturing - a lot of Gold Coast and GWS games are saturday afternoons. Sunday is more WA team orientated (71k sat-122 sun). The Victorian numbers are hugely in favour of Sundays (150 to 230k) - as they were this weekend as well (275k to 436k).

1 million on FTA last night - without regionals or fox. I reckon up to 1.6 million all told.

Fri TV #AFLFinals Seven 656k (Mel 500k Ade 156k) 7mate 337k (Syd 37k Bri 26k Per 274k)

NRL will probably pull 1.2-1.3 all told when their regionals come in.

Fri TV #NRLFinals#WWOS QF1 Nine 646k (Syd 431k Bri 215k) GO! 108k (Mel 96k Ade 1k Per 12k)

its not really apples and apples is it, with fox not broadcasting the nrl finals.

Theres no such thing as an apples with apples comparison when it comes to football broadcasting. If history has taught us anything, Fox numbers are generally much lower than comparable FTA ratings though. If anything, this should have worked to the NRLs advantage.

Look at it like this

AFL
  • Simulataneous broadcasting on Fox and FTA
  • 4 matches a week allocated to FTA,
  • Different matches in different markets according to team and location with 8 teams outside Victoria this definitely affects averages.
  • Fox exclusivity is mostly down to 1 or often no matches a week.
  • Some Fox and Free to air games overlap broadcast wise.
  • No reported New zealand ratings
  • No reported Victorian regional ratings
  • AFL matches are 3 hours long with many breaks.
NRL
  • No simulataneous broadcasting
  • 3 matches exclusive to Channel 9
  • Friday night broadcasts are often different games in Queensland and New South Wales. Reported ratings are two games, not one.
  • 5 matches exclusive to Fox
  • No overlap in timeslots
  • New Zealand ratings included
  • Regional ratings for Queensland and NSW almost always reported. We know from Regional TAM there are no Victorian Regional NRL ratings.
  • NRL matches are two hours long with less breaks.

Whilst that's a fair assessment.

I think we both appreciate that the biggest advantage is fox simulcasting games form a numbers point of view.

In terms of breaks, in AFL you are less likely to change the channel because the break is shorter, in the nrl the break is longer so more chance you will change so that's a bit of a wash.

I think the next broadcast deals will marry up the sports a bit better with both games being simulcast.

The biggest advantage remains free to air coverage, because its available to all. Its why getting games on victorian tv is important to AFL clubs, because theres only so many of them that can be covered on a weekend. Simulcasting is cool and all, but free to air coverage still draws more viewers.

Interestingly enough, with the 20 matches worth of supplied data from mediaweek we can for the first time imply that AFL regionals are worth about 34% of the metro total (Fox is about 40% of the metro total on average - when simulcast). We've never really had enough AFL regional data to do that before.

NRL regionals were worth about 60% of the metro total, although thats dipped this year to 55%.

Provides a nice rule of thumb that the regional figure will be about 1/3 of metro figure or equivalently about 1/4 of total free-to-air figure.

On inspection, the variation in the ratio from game to game appears to be quite small (sample standard deviation is about 2%).

Ratings for the last two grand finals (which is all I have) conform closely with the rule of thumb (25% and 24% of total free to air respectively). Considering grand finals are free to air only, this perhaps hints also that the metro/regional split in subscription TV numbers is not too far off the free-to-air split.
