It’s a shame about Bennell but good to see the club made the right decision in seeing if his body could withstand a pre-season before signing him.

Any ideas what happens to the last spot on the list now? Was there an obvious plan b player or will it just get taken to the mid season draft?

Bennell no longer an option?

He is, but it's looking less likely his body is going to stand up. I think El Gringo has jumped the gun, but it is a good question. Who else would we have in mind?
I probably have jumped the gun and really wanted the Bennell experiment to work because of the enormous upside.

But it’s only taken weeks for the troublesome calf to strain again, even after the overseas surgeries and the specialised program he was on at the club. Hard to see how it all turns around from here.

I agree with you. Some issues were expected, but i guess how many issues can happen before we pull the pin? Sounds like he was still a bit away from going full tilt, so this is worrying for sure. His talent is worth the long term view. We have 2 open spots i believe, so he might be worth punting on still as we have another spot on top of his. I have no doubt he is doing all the right things and the club isn't putting any pressure on him. So fingers crossed he can get up and going again. As doubtful as it is, I would love to see him play again at the top level.

Or we could have Bennell train with us or Casey and still pick him up mid season. I don't think calf awareness means anything.
The fact that it was spotted before a tear could be progress.
Would picking him up mid season mean mid season draft. As far as I’m aware unless we were stone motherless last he needs up for anyone to grab. Unless teams showed him and us grace.
But agree seems a minor setback. IMO we’ll take him in March unless there’s a major setback.

I was more saying that just because he misses a week of training now doesn't mean it's over for him

By the sounds of it, I think the club was prepared for him to have a minor set back or two, as it was probably a pretty reasonable assumption it would happen after what I assume was some pretty serious surgery. I'd think as long as he makes it through to the March deadline without any major interruptions, we'll roll the dice with him.

Well hes on the plane up to the camp. Probably * all didnt he have a big run just before? Surely pulled up sore so gave him a week off. He wasnt going to play til mid year anyway so can keep easing him into it instead of him pushing through a little niggle which no doubt hes done every other time trying to get out there.

Isn't stopping him slotting them from the boundary either...

He’s had plenty of opportunity to practice kicking them from that side of the fence the last 4 years

With fans like ours who needs enemies.

But seriously, I've run out of things to cross hoping that Bennell can get back out there. It's unfair for someone with so much talent to not get to show it .... specifically, it's unfair for someone with so much talent to not show it for us.
To be fair if he took his AFL career seriously or got drafted by anybody besides GCS this probably wouldnt even be an issue. Glad hes had a daughter and pulled his head in. Hopefully he gets his shot at it everybody deserves a redemption story

Yeah absolutely, bit of a curse of the super talented to start with. He would have been picked for everything growing up without needing to try too much, so never really learned a work ethic, and then being at GC is just about the last place you'd learn it after being drafted as well.

You'd imagine he's now gained a whole lot of perspective in his life after a nightmare last 4 years, as well as becoming a father, so if he can get back on the park, he'll be desperate to make the most of it.

Bennell is one of the most naturally talented footballers I've ever seen, he 3 and 20d 5 times before he played 50 games. Like wut.

He had a 6 and 28 against Geelong.

Be amazing if he actually manages to fix his calves.

The pure arrogance on the bloke (mean this in a positive note) just calmly and casually slotting it through the big stick. No carrying on or breaking out in a smile, just get the job done because he knows himself what an absolute freak he is.

I'd sign him up straight away if it was up to me. But thats just me personally.

So would I. Can another club swoop in and steal him from under our nose or do we definitely have first option?
