Well yes but Carlton need not make it so easy for them either...

Of course. I agree with the attention the media are giving us. I just don't want them to embellish so much that their message loses its impact.

Martin is clearly not fit after the injury.
He should be working up to standard in the 2s.
Unfortunately Martin was ready to return when the VFL was in recess, leading to his inclusion in the seniors when a return via the VFL would have been more appropriate.

I would be dropping him back to the VFL now for a couple of weeks to regain fitness & confidence.

no competitive sportsperson goes into a contest with thought of losing front of mind unless you’re a cricketer from the sub-continent....our insipid performances sit squarely with the development/coaching staff...blind Freddy can see the players are simply not interested...Teague cannot distance himself from what’s reality, there is no option than to move him on.
I agree that no competitive sportsperson goes into a contest with the thought of losing, but many can go into a contest with the thought of self-preservation at the front of their mind. This is something I have seen from Carlton players too many times over the last 15 years or so. If this doesn't change, we will be going through many more coaches before we make a Grand Final, let alone a premiership.

Carlton negativity festival at the moment

Times up says Leigh Matthews he’d resign if in same position as Teague in Fox Footy article here . Senior coach needs total say on assistants (not external people) if they don’t have that control they shouldn’t be in the job.

The audio with Wallsy chucking in his two cents in the on 3aw here

Wallsy points out the obvious on our recruits, Ed Curnows being played out of position and poor leadership of Docherty leaving defensive responsibilities to kids like Stocker. Need to win and show heart. Walshy needs a couple of years before captaincy.

They suggested that none came for him. Some were never going to, and were in fact running with opponents, trusting in teammates close by to stop Whitfield. Their point remains valid but they had no need to embellish to make it. But media ...

Is that not the problem? Trusting in team mates, that can be another way of saying, I’ve done my bit, I’m safe, I’m not the problem.

The amount of times this year, I’ve seen our own players sprint away from the opposition player with the ball, is, a lot.

Fisher has been an offender for years and Doc this year on one occasion even ran past a player with the ball in the goal square, holding his opponent so he wouldn’t get the goal, instead of you know, what calking the player with the ball.

Sorry I’m venting, my point is, when you’re in a position to do something, do something.

I have to say that some of the vision shown is embellished somewhat. They show Whitfield beating 6 of our players, but some of those guys were way too far away and had opponents running with them. If they came in for Whitfield, they'd be baked for leaving their opponent free.

The scribes needs to stop with the hyperbole a little.

You heard Brown, they left all the good stuff on the cutting room floor

Teams have been playing through Docherty since last season.

The reason we moved him to the wing a few weeks back was that we finally recognised it too.

I was prepared to give him last year as leave pass but this year he hasn’t really come back to anywhere near his pre-injury/illness level.

Unfortunately it looks like the injuries/illness has caught right up with Doch - needs to go back twos to find his mojo.

Speaks volumes that Cripps and Weitering were put before the media rather than Docherty.

Cripps was on to something with his comments yesterday, the players need to rediscover joy in their game - Doc more so than just about anyone else.

I'm talking about the guys who were running with opponents. They had to play the percentages and trust those closer to shut down the ball carrier while they continued to follow their man in case they became dangerous. Those guys shouldn't have been part of the 6 who were identified. It doesn't take 6 players to run Auskick style at Whitfield.

Trust in your team mates is critical.

otherwise we up as kids chasing the footy

Media is relentless when there’s blood in the water. AFL.com making a comparison of Saad and Hind, basically inferring Essendon have picked up pick 8 for nothing.
Well half back flank is the easiest position to play in football.

Saad has been decent but in hindsight (and for a lot of people at the time) pick 8 was far too high a price to play for a half back flanker.

I think that piece of footage is used because 6 players are goal side of whitfield at the stoppage. When Whitfield reappears downfield to link up, none are goal side. Not one.
The footage on our half back flank where Dow barely had position and everyone took of on the spread and left poor old Dow to have about a 4 on 1

Down hill skiing of the highest order that footage.

A lot of people claim Saad was a bad choice, but he's playing to the position we recruited him for, and I think he plays it well. We'd be ****ed many times during many games if it wasn't for him. He chases both ways, he runs and penetrates.
Backline at Carlton is an underpaid occupational hazard and has been for over 15 years

Like I said Saad has been fine. Works hard and earns his pay check.

Not his fault we overpaid in trade value for the position we were recruiting for.

Happy to have him at the club but having used a top 10 pick does hurt

As I said half back flank is the easiest position in footy. You can get most AFL players to fill the role if needed, using a top 10 pick is overpaying.

Not many said much about overpaying at the start of the year. Suddenly a shit year, everything we brought in looks expensive

Every little thing is an issue when you aren't winning games.

Our boys have done a great job
Why is big bad media being so bad to our boys...

Don't think I disagree with any of the bad press we have copped following the last 2 losses
Lose this week and it will get worse

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, wait can I say that in this pc world?

Medicine is W's

Find some

Really don't care what they say in the media, makes no difference to anything and means nothing.

Well to be fair maybe about 10% of it is useful or insightful, the rest is rubbish.

If it turns out that position was the missing link to make us contenders then I guess it is worth it.

How ever its being proven that a half back flanker wasn't going to be the last ingredient to finals footy.

Like I said. Nothing against Saad. He has done his job well.

Just starting to look like Carlton just wanted to try to get some big trades done for optics. Regardless if they were our most pressing needs or not.

Agree with the media, BUT, this has been going on since the start of the year. Our game plan does not suit our skill set because as soon as you make a mistake the opposition will score, there is no fail safe. We don't work as a team, we rely on individual brilliance and individual brilliance relies on confidence of which we are in low supply. The media are only just onto this because we keep loosing, but we have been doing it in the same fashion for weeks.

It's always been a team game, so I'm not sure why Williams gets picked out, the defensive pressure of the whole team needs to be out under the microscope. 40 tackles in a loosing side might be closer to the reasoning of why GWS could waltz around like the Globe trotters.

The game plan needs to be trashed, the shackles cut free and let the boys play, they need to remember why they actually picked up a football to play "the game". At the moment they are going to work in a dead end job with no reward for effort.

i don't think it was for optics, Saad was brought in to break lines, for quick F50 entries to Curnow (injured) and mckay. In reality, All things being equal, a wise move
the only problem is, this is reliant on the form of others improving or at the least, the same as the previous year. It hasn't, that's why everything looks shit

I think it's how the coach wants them to play. Ever since he's been hired he's talked about how he wants to play extra attacking. The natural inclination then is to surge forward, which we often do. Little bit of downhills skier in it but I believe it's what they're instructed to do. As soon as you win the ball get forward.

Unfortunately they misread whether we'd won the ball or not, it was still essentially in the contest and everyone bailed forward leaving Dow as a helpless lamb surrounded by wolves.

Regardless of game plan (and I do have issues with it), of similar concern for me is Cripps the other day when being interviewed was very clear
in his belief that the team is putting in the effort. However I then see vision from Barrett on the AFL website of 4 or 5 Carlton players running at half pace after a sprinting Whitfield from a Blues turnover.

On Multiple occasions this season I've seen vision of Carlton players appear to concede the chase and expect "someone else" to deal with it. There appears to be little "team" in the team and the players are coming across as frustrated with the turnovers and not digging in on the basis of a "well it wasn't me that turned it over again" mentality.

I get the frustrated turnover thing, it's seriously demoralising and the urge to chase can wane if it becomes turnover after turnover but what is Cripps seeing that i'm not?

I'm sure the players are close to mentally shot at the moment in terms of confidence and maybe Teague needs to throw the play book away for some games (it's not like it will hurt us position wise) and just let them play to get that confidence back.
