Give me SOS.I'll take Scarlett over any of them - genuine warrior mongrel who never once took a dive or played for a free and made every forward earn every point they scored.
yep, won me over and I did everything I could to deny him - the diving didn't help his cause but yeah, he was some sort of defender.........I don't buy into the Rance hate.
What I saw was an extremely skilled defender, both one-on-one AND intercepting. I saw matches where he was basically a one-man defensive wall.
OK, so he didn't always get the opposition's most dangerous fwd. And he didn't play full lockdown FB. Yes, he zoned off quite a bit but he was given license to roam. IMO he produced the type of football we would want/expect from Weitering if he was let off the chain.
He was every bit the best defender of that era (alongside Jeremy McGovern and Luke McPharlin who I think was grossly underrated).
What have we proved? Our midfield may be chock full of talent but it has comfortably been bottom 5 on output for years.

Yep. I would like to say our midfield is great but they need to prove it first. Walsh, Cerra and Cripps is some serious talent, although Cripps needs to show it moving forward. Some other clubs midfields are 5-6 deep in that mold. After those three, out next tier is Hewett, Kennedy, Dow, Ed Curnow, maybe Williams heads back into midfield. Maybe Kemp, Stocker, Martin all get midfield time this year.
The midfield can be a very good one but they need to show it.
Hewett is a clear #3/#4 in the pecking order.
Have always rated him very highly. A junk yard dog with class....
Kennedy looked like he belonged in the second half of last season. Smart footballer. Can kick well, mark very well and generally uses the pill well. Good niggler too.
Cuners as the 6th key mid?
Martin and Williams are both very capable mids too - at least in cameo roles.
(Williams' 2019 Prelim Final effort against the Pies is the stuff of legend; Jack M. just needs to stay on the park - & the magic will come)
And by the law of averages of the footy gods - one (maybe two) of Dow, LOB, Carroll, Philp, Stocker or Kemp will step up and really shine this year.
100% this and it’s supported by the fact we’ve been a regular fixture in the bottom 6 over the past 5 years. Walsh and Cripps are the only top 50 midfielders we have. Most teams have 3 and the best teams have 4.What have we proved? Our midfield may be chock full of talent but it has comfortably been bottom 5 on output for years.

I agree it definitely should improve with Cerra and Hewett now at the club but the likes of Setterfield, Kennedy, Ed, Fisher Cunningham, Fogarty etc are so far off being top 50 mids it’s not funny.Cerra, and possibly Hewett, would walk into most AFL midfield groups.....
I reckon you're in for a pleasant shock as to just how much these two guys will improve our midfield - and team!

Hey all, don’t mind me, got a genuine Carlton question for ya. My dad who played juniors and seniors for Lalor in the 80’s and 90’s was no help, so this was my next best option haha.
I’ve been reading through the AFL Record 2022 Season Guide (full of greatness this book, but anyway), in particular I was reading through Carlton’s draft history around 1988-1993. It was pointed out to me by a work colleague that Anthony Koutafides wasn’t mentioned. I cross referenced with a few other things in the book to try and work out how he came to be a Carlton player but to no avail.
Being born in 1991 and not really having a lot of knowledge about footy pre-2000, I took to Google but still not sure I exactly understand how things came to fruition. It says something about the Carlton reserves but then all of a sudden he’s just a Carlton senior player.
It appears to me that a) he was never drafted? and b) some other sort of system must’ve been in play? Maybe zone stuff?
Anyone care to enlighten me, I’m genuinely interested.
Hewett tagged Cripps once and towled him up ,Crippa hardly touched itHewett is a clear #3/#4 in the pecking order.

Here's a link to his Blueseum page. Invited to train with the u19s side.Hey all, don’t mind me, got a genuine Carlton question for ya. My dad who played juniors and seniors for Lalor in the 80’s and 90’s was no help, so this was my next best option haha.

Yep, I live in Sydney, Hewett tagged Cripps nearly every time they played and he was a big problem. I use to look at the Swans team sheet and hope Hewett was not playing when the Blues came up. Unlike a few of our midfielders over the years. Hewett is a disciplined, no nonsense competitor,, that puts the team first. He is built like a man and plays like one.Hewett tagged Cripps once and towled him up ,Crippa hardly touched it
I rate him very high.
Can play different roles and do well.

I also meant to include Dow in that list, but even so I would say "yes" we would have expected at least one of them to become a third top line midfield option. None of them are close to being top 50 and some would not even be top 100 midfielders.were they meant to be?
Exactly the kind of player we needed.
