Literally no - we were like 1 or 2 wins ahead of 10th. The ladder was a logjam proven by how quickly we tumbled down. There was absolutely no run away about our performances in 2024.

The gap from 2nd to 10th after round 17 last year was only ½ game less than it is now

Hi all,

Our game-plan is fundamentally flawed.

  • We are last for disposal efficiency
  • We are 2nd last for kicking efficiency and 5th at 60% of using kicking as a disposal
  • We are 3rd last for rebounding out of our defensive 50m
  • We are 4th last for hard ball gets but 1st for free ball
  • We are 2nd and 3rd for tackling (so we aren't soft)

These stats above tell me that we move the ball slowly and poorly by foot. When we win (like the Geelong game) we tend to move quickly.

What is the point in having key forwards that can mark if you don't move the ball quickly? Why do we hold onto the ball and turn it over. We are in the bottom 8 with clearances and stoppages.

We should be playing outside and fast way more often.

Is this the coaches fault? Pretty much. We plan to go slow and it simply doesn't work. We are not skilled enough by foot to play a slow game style.

TA
This has been debunked by Champion Data - we are the 5th most direct side at moving the football (i.e., moving it fast).

The issues lie in our efficiency and decision making when going forward - whose fault is that? That is the question GW will be answering and will determine if Voss stays or goes.

After round 16 we were a game and a half ahead of 3rd, and 3 games ahead of 9th.

There was a logjam, but we were well ahead of that, as evidenced by the fact that 3 weeks later, after we had dropped a couple, we were still outright 2nd.

We were 6pts above the next best and had won 5 in a row, 6 had we knocked off GWS..

I was seriously thinking ‘this could be the year’

Maybe the ladder flattered us but it doesn’t lie either… the capitulation to giants, then failing to win for Crippa’s 200th, something seemed to happen to us from there to our resolve and ability to play four quarters of good footy…

The port game at marvel was another fantastic opportunity and we failed to respond… the Collingwood game when we didn’t turn up but Gov had his moment… sliding doors… moments we would have seized earlier in the year…

I want ****ing answers man that’s bullshit, let’s hope GW can get to the bottom of it…

Thanks, I'd only just recovered from the PTSD associated with all that and now I've relapsed.
Back to my therapist I go.

"Footy Fun Day" this morning at Icon Park for school holidays.

One player from the men's team showed up, Brodie Kemp.

AFLW Team are training, kids still having a ball, but for one player to show up I thought is pretty poor... Plenty of blokes on the injury list to come down, fully understanding there is a game tonight.

Anyway, thought I would share.

Despite continuing to be mediocre it seems like we've gotten ourselves off the back page.

It's well established that we are bad. The list is broken. Can’t kick. Can't score. Pretty much everyone is underperforming. And we've got three decades of culture issues to solve.

Unless we cop a massive flogging between now and season end its shaping as an uneventful finish to the season. The media have moved on, there's no new story to tell, we're just as irrelevant as the other cellar dwellers West Coast, Richmond, St Kilda North Melbourne and Essendon.

For now as fans we get to endure mediocrity and boredom in parallel. This sucks.

I don’t want to name names but some Carlton players are not what they think they are nor what the club thinks they are. Kicking and decision making is def. A part of that.

I’ve said this elsewhere - in 1944 Fitzroy were on top of the heap of the VFL, they had just won the premiership, they had won more premierships (eight) than any other team - 50 years later they were no more.

In 1995 Carlton found themselves in the same position as Fitzroy of 1944.

Granted it’s only 30 years, but as we know how quickly that 30 years went, the next 20 will go even more quickly.

The clock is ticking.

The club will never fold

Interesting take by Mike Sheehan and Leigh Matthews I heard from OTC.

Essentially Sheehan said the fall of Carlton FC over last 30 years has been a massive story. Gone from 16 flags and NO wooden spoons to "winning" 6 wooden spoons and NO flags. Our biggest drought and worst period in 150 years.

Still haven't adjusted from the club that could go out and buy the best coaches and/or players.

I could NOT agree MORE

This has always been my take. Carlton have taken for ever to embrace modern football. SC, Draft, Development etc. We still don't fully get it BUT I believe we are improving.

The modern Carlton is a bottom club. We are a joke. Like Tigers were for 30 years. Like St Kilda, Fitzroy of 80s and 90s. Successful modern clubs get most things right. You need finance, development, LM and coaching all of a high standard and on the same page. This is elite sport

For all the talk about a coach or player etc THIS IMO is our issue. It is Cultural

For all the criticism of Cook (and I am one in some areas, probably harshly and ignorantly) I believe he has put us on this path to possible success. Wright now has the opportunity to fix our football side and build on this.

I feel like this is just hindsight hero type stuff when many, including yourself, said over pre season that we were flying and the best we'd been etc etc, all footy departments finally aligned, coaches and players all on the same page and all the rest of it.

Sheehan and Matthews also said in that segment that there wasn't a single Carlton player who would get a game at Brisbane... Just nonsense hyperbole from two ancient relics trying to generate some headlines and top up their retirement funds.
