zanardi's crash at eurospeedway was pretty grusome. very very lucky to race again, let alone survive.

he wona gold in cycling at the london paralympics. really is an inspirational man

Warning: this is seriously graphic. It is of Wayne Gardner in his early days colliding with Italian, Franco Uncini. Gardner (unsurprisingly) thought he'd killed him and nearly quit on the spot. Uncini survived and is now the MotoGP rider safety representative.

I'm sorry but how the ****ing **** is that guy still alive. Helmet knocked off and everything. Very similar to what happened to Super Sic :(

I "obtained" a doco the other day called Grand Prix - The Killer Years (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00z8v18)

Mechanical failure, lethal track design, fire and incompetence snuffed out dozens of young drivers. They had become almost expendable as eager young wannabes queued up at the top teams' gates waiting to take their place. This is the story of when Grand Prix was out of control.

Some very graphic scenes (bodies burned alive etc) and really does open up your eyes just to how dangerous the sport was, and sometimes, still is.

Have seen this doco. You'd be referring to the Roger Williamson incident in 1973 :( amongst others. That and the Tom Price incident in South Africa in 1977 are very, very hard to watch.

Anyway, my nomination for this thread is David Purley, the hero of the Roger Williamson incident (tried but failed to save his life). He needed a lot of the karma from that incident when he crashed his own car at Silverstone in 1977. There's no actual footage of the crash, only a few pictures of what's left of his car, which is still in the Donnington museum today. He hit a timber wall at over 170km/h and set a record for going from 180g to 0 in just over 2 feet.

He survived this accident. Really don't know how. Never got back to F1 but did get back to racing a couple of years later before being killed in a plane crash in 1985.

Surely the safter thing to do would have been to stay still and not run in front of the on coming bikers? They would have already started to move from where he was, into where he decided to run...

Yeah, David is a legend in my eyes and definatly had some good karma owning to him. Was the only driver that stopped to try and save Williamson, and you can see when he finally gives up, you can just tell how devestated he is
(sorry in advance for the shitty music)

Luckily it was only a few broken bones...

...just a badly broken left arm, two bone fractures in his back, a dislocated knee and ligament damage, bruising to his lungs and a hairline fracture to his pelvis.

I saw this one a couple of years ago on OneHD's coverage of the Isle Of Man TT. It happened around 2005 (IIRC) and this is an brief interview with the survivor 'Milky' Quayle. He was doing around 160kph when he brushed one wall, sat up off the bike and hit the other wall. It's one of those accidents that just stays with you.

I've watched that crash numerous times, mostly in disbelief, as to what could have been one of the ugliest pieces of telecast motorsport seen. The fact that the only injury was a broken leg to a marshal just astounds me every time I watch it.

Here's one from the spectators point of view.
Tommi Makinen rolls his Subaru in Argentina in 2002 and clears a spectator.

Still Barrichello at Imola on that dark weekend was the nastiest ive actually seen, along with a guy at Indy in the 90s..... Stan someone I think.
