Yeah, but really it was Putin that opened the can though. I mean, what did he really think was going to happen? Did he think this was going to stop NATO expansion? Well, now he's got Finland and Sweden - two countries who were never interested in joining before - seriously considering it. He's expanding NATO, not beating it back.

He's also forced 2 million and counting Ukrainian refugees further into the West. This will only strengthen the ties between the West and Ukraine. In the unlikely event that Ukraine would have ever considered joining hands with Russia in any way, there's zero chance of anything like that ever happening now.

I have to conclude that the man actually believes his own deluded "manifesto". And it's sad in a way, because he used to be a lot smarter than this. He was calculating, and he always seemed super aware of the geopolitical balance of everything around him. But this - this was lost before it even started.

It was a can that needed to be opened though. The world is done with tyrants, and we're on our way to a different global reality.

One thing that is consistent about those private mercenary organisations is that they are run by extreme right wing campaigners. Eric Prince is insane.

The reasons the Russians invaded was that up until January the US via NATO was training the Ukrainian military to basically function within or alongside NATO even tho it wasn't formally part of it. Russia has said for years that Ukraine joining NATO means war. That's why this is happening. Everything else is a distraction.

That's the only reason they have to invade. You might not agree with it but if you were a Russian leader in those circumstances you wouldn't do anything else. Neither would anyone here. (Tho I'd hope none of us aone of us are ruthless or brutal enough to rule a country like Russia for a start...)

It doesn't matter that Azov has little public support. They are a part of the Ukrainian military and are funded and armed by the Ukrainian government. That would be like the British government giving the EDL uniforms, guns and wages.

Advising him on how to beat Tymmochenko and get Western aid. Yanokovych locked up Tymmochenko after beating her in the 2010 election. She did a deal with Russia while Ukraine owed a fortune to Russia for gas that had Russia providing its gas to Ukraine at half the price the rest of Europe was paying in 2009. I'm pretty sure it was while Manafort was working for him that Yanokovych allowed Shell access to Ukraine's energy reserves and signed a deal with the IMF allowing for economic "reforms" typical of neo liberalism. The next year was when Euromaiden happened and when Putin then seized Ukraine's energy assets thru the invasion and the separatists.

Even tho he's sposed to work for Russia, nothing has really worked for them where he's been involved. Its gone the opposite way.
