THE NRL’s desire to have a geographical spread in the upcoming women’s competition could be under threat, with nearly half of the competition set to sit out of the bidding process.

The Courier-Mail confirmed at least five teams will not submit for licences, including the Cowboys, Titans and Raiders, while the Storm are “unlikely”.

Aside from the Broncos, only the Sharks, Rabbitohs, Roosters and Dragons were able to confirm they will put in bids, while Manly and Penrith ruled themselves out.

The Bulldogs were “undecided” while the Tigers were also “unlikely”.

NRL womens comp launches this year. LU has 1 thread with about 265 posts on the NRLW so far. The international pages have 2 threads with a combined total of 6 posts on the womens team. Says it all really. BF had about 10 times that at the same stage, probably a lot more than 10 times to be frank.

I realise I am stretching the boundaries with this post about the NRL Administration in general.
You guys think the AFL has got problems with the AFLW - Well have a read of this lot.
Also as posted above some of their clubs not interested in Womens NRL currently. That sort of sounds familiar in 2016 with the AFLW announcement with some of the AFL Clubs.

Applications of interest for six licenses in the proposed NRL Womens League closed yesterday.
Here is the washout ---
Clubs who made a public committment - St George/Illawarra, Cronulla, Sydney Roosters, Brisbane, South Sydney.
The sixth Club not known at this time.
There were no applications from the 4 clubs in NRL heartland in Western Sydney. Perhaps a big surprise.
Four other Clubs held off due to money problems and lack of time for a squad. Will try to come in later.
That makes a total of 14 teams out of the 16 in the NRL who have or have not made public statements.
Estimated cost to field a team - $500,000 incl fees and player payments.
There will be a short term 2018 season leading up to the NRL Finals and the Grand Final will be an opener for the Mens Grand Final.
The NRL has said the licenses will be issued on the basis of 6 teams for a 5 year term.
We should say at this time that it is a very flexible situation and changes will probably come.

I am surprised the NRL is not scheduling their NRLW to play in the NRL off-season. Giving their women clear air would afford the NRLW comp. a much higher profile/publicity/ratings.

I'm not sure, however, what NRLW crowds would be like if played as stand alone, off season games. RL has a reputation as a very blokey sport, not particularly empathetic to women's rights & overturning stereotypes etc. Does the NRL still have female cheerleaders at all its games?

I have noticed Play Rugby League ads, showing photos of jnr. female players. Ditto their ads for the Syd. jnr. rugby league early season short comp. -FREE registration (for males & females). It will be interesting to see how many females want to play contact RL -but their nos. are growing, as are female contact RU 7's.
In 2017, L.Daley & a NSWRL official suggested it might be a good idea to offer free registration, for the normal winter season, for one year to all NSW jnr. Club RL players. This would be a trial to see if it could reverse the long decline in male RL nos.

Female AF got its initial big boost in Vic. through secondary school female AF.
C.150,000+ females already (& for decades) play non-contact touch/tag etc. Will many want to swap to such a physical game as RL?

RU has just announced for jnr. club & school comps. weight/height criteria. RL is also examining this area. This introduction, allowing players to play against opponents of more equal weight & strength, should make many parents happy -& probably provide a big boost for jnr. male & female nos. playing the contact rugby codes.

Excellent move on their part. Playing RU at school in south Auckland was fun, we'd come up against a school team of 18 and 19-yo Tongan lads repeating years 11 and 12. Some were good players, the rest were there to see how big a crater you'd make when they slammed you into the turf.

Will play double headers, and count people coming through the gate in the last 5 minutes of the women's game as attendee's of the women's. Then trumpet higher crowds than AFLW.

The NRL Women are getting organised with the initial 40 player squad announced with NSW and QLD prominent and one NT Woman.
This squad will form the initial basis of their first actual teams.
They claim they have plenty of players to select from but the 40 above were the best.
Expect plenty of Sydney type propaganda from now on with this new comp, and I will add in Jan 2019 the NRL Rivers of Gold TV deal kicks in, which should result in increased spending by the NRL in all areas of their game.
It will be interesting to watch the growth from 2019 and will it eventually slow down the AFLNSW increase in Womens numbers.

Since when has RL been an Olympic sport?

Rugby is rugby and sevens is closer to league than it is to union.

ex-pro rugby, semi-pro league player.

And many sevens tournaments.

The NRL have officially moved to integrate more closely the Touch Footy Group with their organisation, and are claiming 600,000 players which they have done previously.
The Touch Mens and Womens Amateurs teams will play prior to the NRL fixtures replacing the NRL U20 comps.
This new push may bring more NSW Women/Girls to that set up. Will this make it harder for AFLW recruiting up there.
Just think running up and down a field with no contact -Talk about breeding future soft generations.

Haha....tbf touch is a great recreational sport....not sure it will fly as a spectator sport but clearly they will try to encourage as many as possible to cross over

I'm pretty sure most the backs in the rugby 7s team are ex rep touch players as well as Kate McCarthy from the lions

RL is a full body contact sport. Touch/tag are non-contact sports.
It is very wise for the NRL to takeover touch & tag. The NRL can directly market to them, & it assists the NRL desire that some tag players become contact RL players.

It is completely false, however, for the NRL to classify touch/tag players as "RL" Players ie to include them in their contact RL numbers.
Touch/tag players are playing a NON-contact sport for a reason! They are definitely NOT RL players.

The AFL wouldnt have dared not include the Dogs and Dees for the AFLW first season....but over in NRL land

NRL ****ed up big time leaving Cronulla out. Even as a Broncos fan (a team that got a licence) it feels wrong we got in before they did.

With six bidders they should have given licences to all six teams. I also wouldn't put it past them to give a new bidder a licence ahead of Cronulla when the competition expands.

Slightly off topic but related to Womens Rugby.
Twiggy Forrest the WA Iron Ore Billionare set up another International Rugby Union Comp - World Series Rugby - after the Mens Western Force got booted out of Rugby Australia. Several existing rules were altered to include 10 point tries.
Apparently the revamped Mens Western Force will play a series of 8 matches and as part of the Pre Match Entertainment a Womens Rugby Comp will play beforehand.

It looks like he scooped up some of the existing Women Rugby players in Perth and set up his Western Force Womens team.
We have sorted it out and ended up with the following info.
The Western Force Women did play in the Super W National Comp against the other clubs in that comp under the auspices of Rugby Australia.
The Article below talks about Womens Rugby in WA and nationally and I am not surprised that that womens sport has a base in WA with all of the migrants from South Africa, New Zealand and the UK in Perth.

The Super W in Australia has finished and we are not sure what happens next -Possibly they may play against Womens teams from the International World Series teams.

The New Zealand Warriors beat the Sydney Roosters in the first match in the 4 team NRL Womens comp last week.
Apparently also it seems several cross coders from Soccer Football have also joined teams in that comp.
So the migration between different Womens Sports continues at a pace.
