It's amusing that over a 1,000 people have already lost their jobs at western power and yet according nahan thousands of jobs will be generated by its sale
Its the biggeet piece of s**t the government peddles. Privatisation always raises prices. Thise radio ads are insulting.

I've read that Western Power holding a monopoly on the polls and wires would mean prices still regulated by the government.

See this article:

The proposed privatisation of the asset has already caused heated debate with unions running a campaign claiming it would lead to higher power prices.

But the Government said that would not happen, and experts agree.

Acil Allen Consulting executive director John Nicolaou said power prices were capped by government regulation.

"Western Power is a monopoly asset and as a result it is regulated as are other monopoly assets around the country," he said.

"The ability for a private sector to charge monopoly rates is limited because of regulation and that doesn't change by ownership structure whether it's in government hands or private hands."

Economics Consulting Services managing director and former chair of the Australian Institute of Energy WA Murray Meaton agreed, adding there was no evidence to suggest privatisation led to higher prices in other states.

"Network charges make up about half of the retail electricity price and network charges are subject to regulation by the government regulator, there is no evidence they will increase," he said.

"It will be determined by a balance between efficiency improvements, hopefully there will be some efficiency improvements with private operations, the private operator will try and increase network prices but that will be subject to negotiation with the regulator.

"So, I don't think there's a case for increased electricity charges."

Of course prices will be regulated by government. But when the company who buys western power de appreciate their assets and send 40 lawyers to the electricity commission claiming they need to increase cash flow and raise prices to pay for it. Like what happened in Victoria and whats now happening in NSW. Prices will rise.

Also the main reason to sell is to write down 8 billion in debt
. Whoever buys western power inherits the debt
. Why would anyone purchase 8b in debt with the idea they will have to own western power for 16+ years to pay off that debt?

In that case profits would pick back up and the WA government would get a bigger dividend from their 49% stake.

Or they can tell WP to get stuffed. Or they can act in the public's best interest and only give WP a reasonable increase in prices.

People don't care too much about the debt costs if there's a healthy profit after debt payments, which is the case at WP. Investors will also get 11 billion in assets, so they're not just buying the debt.

I ran some basic figures a while ago and the price seemed fair. From memory P/E was about 15 and P/B was about 1 - pretty well in line with an average stock.

But yes, not being strictly liable for that $8 billion is the big prize for the government here. Effectively they'll no longer have to service that entire debt but they'll still get about 40% of the income they got from WP before (depending on WP dividend payout ratio).

So they can't charge more. Good to know

Problem then becomes spending cuts which impacts jobs and maintenance on infrastructure

Ok, but you'd have to trust the WA government to act in the best interest of the public - they'll have 49% of the vote when it comes to dismissing directors who are too hell bent on cutting costs and they'll certainly be able to hand pick a number of directors onto the board.

In a general sense, I get that none of this is ideal but ideas for retiring 8 billion in WA gov debt are few and far between.

Likewise, what role will poles and wires play in a world where solar panels and battery storage are advancing?

Whoever buys WP will be inheriting poles that need replacing urgently. This is an area that has constantly had running repairs and reduced budget for years. Hence why you see so many poles with steel supports
The steel also acts as a failsafe if you get rot under the soil line, so it doesnt just completely topple and can then be fixed up.

So it sounds like this was given the big smack down by the grey hair brigade at council last night.
Typical Perth........nimby residents trying to stop a decent development.

Is supposed to be going to a mail ballot though, given apparently there were too many people to count accurately. Am surprised a decision like this would be decided that way regardless. Surely it should be up to the council to make the call, not a show of hands from a few ratepayers.

Shits me

People are ******* morons at times and the nimby types especially s**t me

Broome died after the rent-a-crowd got their way and helped stop the gas plant from proceeding

Geraldton has never been allowed to become a tourist destination because of a few select families for the past 30 years and it is now nothing more than a fishing village

I always thought the council had the final say and if it was overturned it could be taken to a higher department and overturned. It seems to happen all the time when you object to monstrous appartments being built next door to you. Seems as usual it's the blue rinse looking after the blue rinse

Nimbys are a major cause of unemployment and homelessness. They are scum.
