Isn't Absinthe illegal in Oz? I have an Absinthe bar near me where they have around a hundred varieties, I've only ever been able to handle 2 per visit.

There's Absinthe and absinthe.

I've got a bottle of Green Fairy that I bought from Dan Murphys. No wormwood. 60%

You can get Absinthe with wormwood but its a bit harder to find.

Its not that big a deal anymore.

It was banned in France for decades, they thought it sent people mad. Van Gogh disagreed and cut his ears off.

I've had absinthe with wormwood many times. Traditional style, straight with a sugar cube melted through the "absinthe spoon". It does send you a tiny bit loopy, but still have both lugs attached.

It was so popular in Europe during the great binge - I reckon they may have overreacted just slightly. It's no MDMA or DMT (i've heard)

Now, this is why TDD is the future, the elevated state.

I have invented the Jamaican Mexican:
  • An old fashioned, filled with ice,
  • 2/3 vodka,
  • 1/3 banana liqueur.
  • Game on!

I know a certain Brahma bullock that would've been all over it!

swap the vodka for Bundy rum

Isn't absinthe literally just alcohol? I'm pretty sure there's no scientific evidence towards it having any hallucinagenic effect.

I believe the prevailing theory as to why France had made Absinthe illegal for so long was because there was a "coffee house culture" developing around the drink where the working class would sit and drink and come up with ideas of how to overthrow the establishment. And so the establishment made it illegal so they couldn't get overthrown

Having an argument about the meaning of ‘a few’ versus ‘several’

The way I see it, both refer to at least 3 things (as two is definitively ‘a couple’) but ‘several’ is less specific an can be used to refer to more things than ‘a few’ (which eventually turns into ‘many’). BUT it can mean the same - 3 is both a few and several.

My wife believes that several is more than a few

For example if I say that we have several hours before we go out, this might mean we only have 3 or 4 hours - whereas she will assume we have at least 5 or 6

Now everyone tell me I’m right

And none of this ‘change the way you talk so you’re more specific’ business, I’ve had enough of that already

you and your wife need to bang more

probably get a little poisoned from the wormwood too

Wormwood contains numerous plant compounds, the best known of which is thujone

Thujone is thought to excite your brain by blocking gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that has calming effects on the central nervous system.

Although this compound may have several benefits, consuming thujone in excess is toxic and has been linked to seizures and even death

You can do better than that

no, i cant. i really cant

this is my life when im not posting here

Most (all?) Absinthe you buy in Oz doesn't have wormwood in it, for example the popular Green Fairy brand. So yes, it's just a strong (60% / 150 proof) pretty evil tasting spirit.
You can get varieties though that contain wormwood (traces probably these days) and the effect you get feels slightly different to just drinking other spirits of that strength. About 60% is a pretty common barrel strength, so you can get a lot of single malts with that sort of kick.

But hallucination, or anything obviously, noticeably weird or different? Never experienced that. Just felt a little loopy compared to ingesting a similar amount of single malt. It could well have been placebo effect too.

I've always assumed the sending people mad, etc. was just wormwood poisoning.

(speaking of which, not a full packet of chips today. Those Jamaican Russians have a sting in the tail. Go carefully. ****ing Hawthorn, driving me to that sort of excess!)

I believe 'cannibal' only refers to humans eating human flesh....so no

Cannibalism is the act of consuming another individual of the same species as food. Cannibalism is a common ecological interaction in the animal kingdom and has been recorded in more than 1,500 species.

so yes, the m and ms are cannibals

Does anyone here do karate?

I have been thinking about getting back into martial arts. I did a lot of taekwondo when I was younger, and it seems like shotokan or kyokushin karate would be a pretty natural progression. I find all the different karate associations a bit overwhelming and I'm not really sure which ones are highly regarded or how to find a good sensei.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated - I really don't want to end up at a McDojo surrounded by kids.
