The way I see it, both refer to at least 3 things (as two is definitively ‘a couple’) but ‘several’ is less specific an can be used to refer to more things than ‘a few’ (which eventually turns into ‘many’). BUT it can mean the same - 3 is both a few and several.

My wife believes that several is more than a few

For example if I say that we have several hours before we go out, this might mean we only have 3 or 4 hours - whereas she will assume we have at least 5 or 6

Now everyone tell me I’m right

And none of this ‘change the way you talk so you’re more specific’ business, I’ve had enough of that already

This is how I understand the words.

Few = 3-5ish, while several = 6-10ish

When I say a few, I'm thinking "about three". And several I'm thinking "about 7".

When a hear a few or several, I'm thinking "more than one, but fewer than lots, and several is fewer than few".

This is because people are infuriating and stubbornly refuse to conform to my view of the world so must be catered for with excessive tolerances.

In this case, as with most, your wife is right even if she's wrong.

Few = 3-4
Several = 5-7

Isn't Absinthe illegal in Oz? I have an Absinthe bar near me where they have around a hundred varieties, I've only ever been able to handle 2 per visit.
