A tax question for those in the know with tax laws. I bought a laptop last financial year. I bought it mainly for the purpose of doing my PhD on. However I've probably be using it 50% for work, 50% for PhD. Am I able to claim 50% of the purchase price as a deduction, even though I am provided a laptop from work?

Proposing to my partner in July over a 2 week holiday. Should I do it at the start of the holiday so we can celebrate, the end, or something inbetween?

Update: she said yes. Proposed to her by the waterfront in Bari on the 3rd night. We only just got back from Puglia yesterday and we already want to go back next year. Incredibly beautiful place.

Tax/pay question

Am I better off cashing in banked hrs on a non overtime week (basic 40 hr pay) or does it not matter if I do cash it in on an overtime week as its all the same at years end anyway?
At the end of the year it will make no difference but you probably pay more tax and get more back.

Ok, so I’m just gonna ask this here because it’s as good a place as any. You guys don’t normally let me down :)

I’m 20+ years out of the dating game but really hit it off with somebody on the weekend. Spent half a day together and I think things went as well as possible.

Problem is, she just flew back to Australia for a couple of weeks. We did plan to do a festival thing in a few weeks but what’s etiquette here? Texting was a bit odd with her. Didn’t chat much but when she did it seemed enthusiastic.

Don’t want to seem clingy already but don’t want weeks to go by and I drop off radar. Obviously won’t bug her while on holiday. Do I just wait for her to get back and message me first?

Have you sent the last message and she hasn't responded?

If not maybe just say enjoy your holiday and I'm really looking forward to catching up when you get back.

Question for people with male dogs who are missing a hind leg - how do they pee?
(This question popped into my mind after seeing a three-legged dog hopping around the park this morning.)

For the Sydneysiders or people familiar with Sydney. I have an 8-hour transit in Sydney between domestic and international next month. I would like to go into the city for a bit. Is there a one-day rail pass or something I can get. I see that the fare for a 2-minute trip between domestic and international is $20. WTF? I thought Brisbane was bad.

Unfortunately not. The airport stations are privately owned, so there is a $15 gate access fee added to the price of the normal rail network fare (which is what makes it so expensive).

If you can find 2-3 other people doing the trip, splitting a cab to the city will be cheaper. Otherwise you’re SOL.

I always take the train. It’s expensive but parking and traffic around Kingsford-Smith are worse.

can you look at getting a bus to the closest non-airport train station (mascot?), and then get a cheaper train fare to city?

Possibly. It would just mean carting my luggage around all day.

Use a luggage storage locker.
Lockers at Kingsford-Smith are a bit of a pain because they are only available in T1 International - if you're travelling domestically and going to spend the day in Sydney it's usually easier to lug your baggage to Central on the train and use a locker there

They are like $10-20/day depending on the size of your bag

Got this email
This communication contains important information that has been approved by the Supreme Court of Victoria (the Court) to be sent to you because you have been identified as a likely group member in a class action commenced against Macquarie Leasing Pty Ltd in relation to certain credit services provided to group members who took out car loans through those dealers, and "flex commissions" that were paid to those car dealers.

Wondering if anyone recieved similar. Getting mixed signals on google if it's a scam or not. There was a loan with Macquaire leasing but with all this leaked info these days i'm not really buying it.
