1997, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2021, 2024. Don't worry! We've been in the situation a few time before and...oh wait...
Ill Be Back Jim Carrey GIF

Ahh yeah fair point. Hopefully a record meant to be broken.

On another note - was only a very casual supporter then but, I did not realize we got that close in 97!
Yep. All we had to do was beat Melbourne at the G. Of course, back then we almost never won away from home. Demons were ****ing awful that year but we had run out of steam by this point. Also Andrew Wills finished top 10 in the brownlow medal with 15 votes. Hell of a year.

Imprinted on my mind. And also cements my belief that J-lo = CC.

Yep, they're eerily similar.

Not terrible coaches but not great. Both managed to rebuild terrible teams to competitive ones, but both look/looked unable to take the next step. And both kept missing finals by a whisker during formative years when the team should have been gaining invaluable finals experience.

They're even locked dead even on games coached right now with only one win separating them:

JLo - 129 games for 68 wins
CC- 129 games for 67 wins

Well the good thing is mark Harvey is up next so that should be a rollercoaster 😂

Disagree all you want ubiquitous226, it happens far too often. We are playing against 26 players every week.

Go to every team's board and there will be someone accusing the umpires of corruption and being biased against their team, they can't all be right.

Unless you've got something factual, accusing someone of corruption just because you don't like their decisions isn't reasonable.

The vast majority of people, myself included, have probably never umpired any game of AFL above U12s, let alone an elite game of football. Most people have probably never experienced anything like the pressure they're under every week, so I do cut them some level of slack that you can have the best intentions and still not get it right.

Disclaimer: I also yell at them every game

I use these wonderful things called my eyes and then process that information through this crazy new device called my brain.

Yeah, cool, I'm sure they're under pressure. It's just that it seems to be one way traffic. Team from rugby state comes to Perth to contest a massive game with lots of emotion? Better get that rabid crowd quiet by making up some 50s and handing them 3 early goals. But we 'didn't see' those guys in purple getting scragged, whoopsie.

Confirmation bias is a real thing, that's all I'll say

it’s likely been mentioned earlier, but what the actual **** was the “walk the ball down the other end of the ground to give Brissy a freebie kick at goal” for??? I mean ****s sake how often do those get paid. Would they ever be paid against big Vic?? No.
lol the one where Morris was whacking Cox in the throat and then admitted to flopping in front of the ump when Cox remonstrated with a shove in the side? umpire wasn’t even looking at them he just saw the bitch flop to the ground

One hidden aspect the other night was the B2B 6 day breaks.

Not an excuse but our 3rd game in 12 days may have caught up with a few and another reason energy could have been down.

Would love to know the W/L records of teams playing there 3rd game in 12 days.

I dont think we will roll over next week its just the case of taking our chances.

Maybe the boys were still feeling the effects of a flu? I mean I know I’m still feeling crap a week or two after the flu? I’m probably hoping that was the reason but still think we looked flat and we were not as savage with our chasing tackling etc?

I m finding it hard to watch every week being slaughtered by the umpires.
We are 4th on the ladder for most free kicks against and 5th on the ladder for worst free kick differential despite our winning record

Pretty blatantly being ripped by umps to me..
I'm sure if I looked at last year it would be the same or worse.

So no chance at a home final now? Would we be taking a major financial hit from that?

Hope so, would be the only thing that makes the board take notice

We’ve broken records with member numbers and attendances have been great so I don’t imagine they’re going to be too concerned by how the books like at the end of the year.

We can certainly still make a home final. We need to win. We need an upset somewhere. Port to beat Gold Coast?
Demons to beat Pies? Saints to beat GWS? Bombers to beat Gold Coast.

All unlikely, but if we win only need one result to fall our way to finish 6th or better.

More likely is that if we win we finish 7th. Dogs finish 9th. The loser of Lions and Hawks finish 8th.

Best chance is Port to knock off GC at home in the last game for Boak and Ken Hinkley.

It is being billed up as a big final game by Port.

Honestly though if we are good enough to win and we finish 7th it appears likely we play either GC or GWS and we have beaten both already this year away from home.

It bears repeating that free kick numbers in isolation don't tell you that much.

Personally I feel they need to recalibrate and pull in the overall effect of umpiring and pay less frees.

For forever and a day the biggest frustration for fans is being inconsistent, it'll never be perfect and it's not like fans are objective judges anyways, but rule simplification has to be part of it.
