And today DIDN'T resolve the issue? What game were you watching?

Some players respond well to being dropped, others do not. Some players work their buns off in the twos and bounce back better players, others lose their confidence and start to doubt themselves as AFL players and you can take a long time to recover from being dropped.

It is not ideal to have a lot of "confidence" players on your list but the really creative players are often confidence players and they can have a lot of variance in their form.

In a perfect world devoid of injuries NC could probably afford to drop him even if it takes him a month to find form in the SANFL. But, being pressed with injuries he probably can't afford to drop him and be effectively another man short the next month or so.

Corey McKernan was a confidence player, it doesn't matter how many premiership medals you have or even being worthy of winning a brownlow, when your confidence is shot and doubt yourself then you are not much use to the team.

It’s a pipedream people have macca. People must genuinely believe he can flick a switch and start showing some heart when it isn’t going to happen. He hasn’t shown any heart during his 5 years on the list and when he had a great chance to prove the doubters wrong today, he put in an effort reminiscent of the 2006 NAB Cup GF. :thumbsd:

perhaps I'm not being clear enough.

I'm 100% convinced he shouldn't be on our list.

My point is - I don't think those who make the list decisions are convinced.

Jericho was as soft as anything today, probably almost deserves to be dropped but won't. Presuming Reilly doesn't come up:

In: Massie, Douglas
Out: Goodwin, Welsh

Straight swaps. We need a couple of crumbers, Johncock did well today and Douglas did that job early in the season. Send Mattner further up the ground and maybe into the middle so he doesn't make as many mistakes as he did today. Send Torney back for him and take Porps forward (was out of sorts today in the backline, really cost us the game) and put Edwards there. Play Ricciuto in the middle like he did today but has to play at full forward.

B: Torney, Rutten, Bassett
HB: Knights, Bock, McLeod
C: Mattner, Thompson, Edwards
HF: Douglas, Stevens, Johncock
F: Jericho, Ricciuto, McGregor
R: Hudson, Van Berlo, Shirley
I: Maric, Doughty, Massie, Porplyzia

But did you ever question Corey McKernan desire to put his body on the line and do the 1% to help a team mate out?

Confidence is one thing (and I am not questioning his ability to win the ball) but you don’t need confidence to smother, chase or Sheppard for your team mate.

Porplyzia did not cost us the game today. His turnover was the nail in the coffin though.

Roo struggled more than Welsh as a forward today. Why drop our leading goal-kicker when we are struggling to kick a winning score?

Porplyzia didn't show anything today down back. That's why he's got to play down forward and yes he did cost us the game.

Roo struggled because he had a good opponent, Welsh was well beaten and although he's our leading goalscorer I think he needs a run in the twos. Just for a week

When Corey had lost confidence and it had dragged on a bit he was woeful, didn't chase, put the body in, forgot how to mark it was terrible. Pagan is also notorious for having bad player management skills. He would drop him and he would do nothing in the VFL, it was either get him out of there or de-list him/trade him. He ended up trading him, went to Carlton and won their B&F, had a great year or so until Pagan went over to Carlton then had the same issues.

Laidley, like Pagan, has what I would call poor player management skills so it was no surprise he didn't last long when he came back to North.

I think if Brittan continued to coach Carlton and he stayed there he would have played out as a good player until he retired because I think Brittan was very good at player management.

How did he cost us the game?

(Are you talking about that goal from Ling?)

Porplyzia didn’t look good in defence but just because he mad an errant hand pass doesn’t mean he cost us the game.

So Porplyzia was the single reason we lost the game.

Welsh's opponent was Scarlett, Roo's (when forward) was Harley. Harley is a handy player, but doubt you will get many posters suggesting he is better than Scarlett.

The Shannon Grant and Brent Harvey match ups will be crucial for us. I can't remember Corey Jones having much success against us in the past (I might be wrong) but those two are the danger men IMO.

Manufacturing a score is our biggest issue at the moment. It is actually handy for us that Gibson is out as he might have been Welsh's match up. Who will get him now? Firrito?

Grant didn't really do much this week but has been generally pretty good the last month or so. Harvey has been very good for us recently but it has been more as a midfielder, he can go cold if he spends too long up forward.

Corey Jones is consistantly inconsistant :p He puts in a great quarter or so of football each week and then does nothing after that, by nothing I mean very little. :p

He is very difficult to match up because he is good overhead for a medium player and is fairly zippy on the lead, his biggest issue in recent years has been he has gone too far from goal for disposals and he hasn't hurt sides at times when he gets the ball. This year he is getting a lot more of his disposals closer to goal and has been in a position to kick some goals.

His statistics flatter himself a fair bit (accuracy-wise), they do not highlight the number of rushed or out-of-bounds on the full he has on a weekly basis but he has been a good tertiary option for us. He has kicked 3.1, 2.1, 2.3, 2.3, 1.1 and 4.1 the last 6 weeks so he has been a good target.

He just hasn't played many four quarter games. In the games he has kicked 3 or more goals he generally has kicked all or most of them in one quarter and has been largely invisible for the rest of the game. All I asked of him was to average 2 goals a game and he is on 22 goals this season so I can't complain. ;)

FF: Welsh McGregor Johncock
HF: Knights Stevens Ricciuto
C: Mattner Edwards Van Berlo
HB: McLeod Bock Massie
FB: Torney Rutten Bassett
R: Hudson Thompson Shirley
I: Griffin Campbell Porplyzia Jericho

In: Massie, Campbell
Out: Goodwin (inj), Doughty

Massie has come back well for Norwood and is playing good footy. Get him back in the line-up on the half back flank.
Campbell has not yet had an opportunity and now is a good time to blood him with the injury to Goodwin. See what he's got.

Doughty isn't doing enough. I would drop Jericho, however I'd be tempted to give him one more game to see if he can repeat his Carlton performance. He is flexible so could be used to plug gaps off the bench. Last chance for him though.

Use Johncock up forward from the start and push Knights up there to crumb. Both have a knack to kick goals and with McGregor up there you can at least expect the ball to come to the front and centre. I'd push Mattner up to the wing and give him a more attacking role with Massie replacing him in the back line. I thought Mattner showed some good signs against Geelong and would give him a bit more freedom on the wing.

The majority of Geelongs goals came from errors his was just more blatant, others kicked it further to opposition advantage which rebounded straight back in.
Goals come from rebound for the cats they play the same as Adelaide last year.
This is why they don't need to win in the middle as previous weeks they haven't and as soon as we stopped being defensive enough in the forward line and all semblance of crumbing player we had down there in the way of VB was moved into a defensive role due to a slight spark from Geelong there was no one to score or keep the ball in the forward 50.
Draw some correlation people took them this long to get the same thing going now they are falling all over them self in the media with crap about Adelaides brand of football all regurgitating the same thing an absolute joke but then you can't expect people to think for them self.

I find it strange that some are justifying last weeks disappointment be used as an excuse, if it was me I would have been angry and pissed off but I would have found a way of using this as a form of motivation to prove Neil Craig wrong.

I can except that he may have been down on confidence today and had a lot of anxiety and this could quite easily have hindered his ability to get the ball but in no way will I accept that it will have stopped him from doing the little things. They are not attributes awarded to confidence.

By getting his hands on the ball and then missing a shot on goal or allowing the ball to slip though his hands in a marking contest is a valid excuse for not having confidence but you don’t need to have any confidence to hit the ball hard or attack to body of your direct opponent.

Anyone who has played sport at any sort of level would understand the importance of confidence and even the best player can lose confidence (and you can lose it half way though a game) but that should not stop you from doing the 1 % and attacking the ball or the contest. In football he should have chased or tackled, get to the contest to add some body pressure but today Luke Jericho didn’t so any of that.

Even when you are playing badly, you still attack the ball with vigour or smash your opponent into the ground to take out some frustration, but nothing from Luke Jericho.

Very good post (I think you had another in a similar vein on another thread I liked too).

I actually felt Craigy was sending Jericho a bit of a message after the Carlton game. Don't get complacent. Doing some good things doesn't mean you'll keep getting a game. Learn to keep striving for more.

Luke went out.. he was brought back in. He SHOULD have been hungry. By all reports (I haven't had a chance to see the game yet) he was piss weak. Thats a real shame but speaks volumes IMO.

Sure he has 'something' about him.. but he is NOT special enough to justify persisting with him any longer.

I think my sister a couple of years ago was right. Mick Doughty obviously isn't a registered AFL player, hence why Farmer never got reported for that disgraceful act, he always seemed to be jumped on in the back or they tried to rip his head off and never had a free paid.

Now it seems this year that our own supporters actually can't see him out on the ground because he has been one of those players like Thompson that can hold his head up in our losses.

Maybe he's just Mr Invisible instead

There is no way the club will drop Welsh or Doughty. Doughty over the last month has played his best football this year. Porplizia is not a defender, maybe he could take over the midfield role vacated by Goodwin. Or give Vince a go in that position as he blitzes in the SANFL as a midfielder but we havent tried him there yet. Massie in to take Johncocks spot in defence. Johncock has to stay up forward.

Out: Goodwin, Jericho
In: Massie, Vince

He must be invisble Nikki. IMO he's possibly playing the most consistent efficient team football of his career.

It's not uncommon for players who don't do the spectacular but do the team thing every time to be overlooked by some supporters - but not by the coach and his fellow team-mates. :thumbsu:

Going back to square 1……..I think our Best 22 is still…

Bassett Rutten Torney
Johncock McGregor McLeod
Burton Thompson Mattner
Ricciuto Bock Edwards
Hentschel Welsh Bode

Hudson Goodwin Shirley

Biglands Knights Reilly van Berlo

…you can argue about whether a few players should be forward or back – but essentially it is our best 22.

With Burton, Hentschel, Bode, Biglands, Reilly, and Goodwin out – the replacements come from……..

Archard ®
Doughty
Griffin
Massie
Porplyzia
Stevens
Douglas
Jericho
Campbell
Gill
Hinge
Maric
Pfeiffer
Vince

We’re not out of contention so we need to keep trying to put our best side on the park…..no point rewarding non-genuine form or playing newbies who aren’t ready hence why I've left a few others out.

IMO....

Griff for Biglands…….but may need a rest so Maric might come in.
Stevens for Hentschel
Doughty for Burton
Porplyzia for Bode
Massie on the Bench for Reilly
Jericho as a more versatile option for Goodwin – but of course Knights or VB would start on the ground in Goody’s place and Jericho would be a rotation player.

So from yesterday’s game –

Out:Goody
In: Massie

The rest of it is probably fairly spot on.

Sorry dude but any best 22 that doesn't have Ian Perrie in it cannot be taken seriously :)

Too true. Blows me away.

Heres my team for this week. Go nuts people.

Torney Rutten Basset
Johncock Stevens/Bock McLeod
Doughty Thompson Mattner
Ricciuto Bock/Stevens Welsh
Griffen Mcgregor Edwards

Ruck: Hudson, Van Berlo, Shirley
Int : Massie, Knights, Porplyzia, Vince/Douglas

who does he come in for ?

Bock or McGregor ?
Neither!

As hard as it is for me to say this, and I have been a HUGE fan of his, I think Torney is not having a great season and at that age, the end might not be too far away! :(

He has been a VERY VERY good player for us though. Courage personified and has been a favourite of mine since the first time he pulled on the hoops

Considering he trains down back and given his recent form with the Bays, would you be in favour of giving Hinge a few games down back in place of Torney?

However I thought Torney's performance against the Demons was great, although he hasn't had a great year on the whole.

I said excatly the same thing last week and copped a hiding. Love Torney but I think his body is just about ready to give up the ghost.
