I think Boyds immobility is massively overplayed. He ran a sub 3 second 20m and that was before he entered an AFL environment and has slimmed down. He has shown a few times this year that he actually has a hell of a leap on him that I was unaware of, now when you couple that with being 200cm, a long reach and a proven ability to judge the ball well in flight and mark it at the highest point its going to make him extremely hard to stop in a few years.
Not just that, but we've actually forced him to be more versatile to the benefit of the team, rather than his own personal statistics.

He might have kicked 10 more goals across the games that he's played for us so far in his career if we didn't spend time developing his ruck craft or slimming him down so he could be more mobile and move around the ground more.

If we didn't do that, and instead just bulked him up and plonked him in the goalsquare for the time that he was in the field (a bit like how GWS was playing him) he might have kicked more goals (and therefore got some of the critics of his back) but does nothing to improve the long-term value to him or value to the team at all. His ability to play in the ruck at the very least gives us more flexibility at the selection table and his mobility helps our overall forward structure and ensures that opposition running defenders don't run and zone off him.

I suppose we had the luxury of unexpectedly being a finals team when we recruited him because we could develop him in such an above way with less pressure that he otherwise would have gotten. Imagine if he wasn't getting a game in the AFL team for development purposes and we weren't playing as well!

It's funny how nobody rates him but Bulldogs fans. Most expensive VFL player of all time
No one rates as the eagles as a football side. Away from Perth as soft as an easter egg. Have as much chance as winning a final in melbourne as what i have of dating a super model.

No, its the greatest gamble in the history of footy. One which has already backfired. The game has moved since Boyd got his pay day and big key forwards (which is what is he getting paid for) are yesterdays news. Todays game is mobile not sit around the square and see who's the biggest / strongest.

OF ALL TIME

Wayne Carey wrote an article about him ... said he's ahead of other forwards at the same age who became good

But I guess he's a biased Dogs fan :o

Didn't Bulldogs lose a home final last year? :$:$:$

Also needed big umpiring assistance to beat this "soft as easter egg" side by 1 goal a few weeks ago at home

Bit rich citing losses away from home. Weagles serial offenders, sh*t the bed away from Perth

Read the post I was replying too....do I need to mention Melbourne's record everywhere over last 15 years?

It's already backfired? He was on minimum wage last year.

He's half way through his first season on big money, and he has another 5.5 years to go.

I would suggest that you're being more than a little hyperbolic. Travis Cloke is not in and of himself evidence that his style of forward is outdated - especially when Boyd still has ample time to turn his body into one more close resembling Kennedy or even Hogan.

Minimum wage last year? Can you provide a link?

The game has changed. Lumbering talls aren't popular.

Not minimum wage but he was on standard draftee contract salary and match payments that all players get a fixed amount after they're drafted.

I can't be arsed going through the Collective Bargaining Agreement but it was a tad under $200k

Stupidest trade of all time..

getting close to 1 million this year by all reports and done nothing at all.

Mason Cox has shown more as far as im concerned.

They are paying a million a year to develop him and probably wont see anything for 2 more years at least. What a waste.

Could have got an established key forward for that price.

Mason Cox? Just goes to show how bad Collingwood are mate, when he looks their best forward

There is so much wrong with this I don't know where to start.

Was Mason Cox the most dominant key forward to play at the U/18 level on performance for about 10 years?

Who?
We had to deal with GWS and Boyd was the one we had been watching all year (scouts were at his NEAFL games).

Mitch Clark and Paddy Ryder were the only other two established KPFs (even that is a stretch for Ryder) traded in 2014 however they would have necessitated third party involvement along with dealing with GWS in a deal that was already difficult enough.

Clearly you have missed the point. Mason cox in his first 5 games has shown more than Tom Boyd has. Simple

Its easy to dominate at under 18 level when your bigger than every kid. In the AFL when you aren't so big anymore its much harder.

Im sure you could have dangled a 1 million a year carrot infront of many players and it could have persuaded them to leave.

I rate the kid, people wrote Tom Hawkins off as well at the same age. I expect in the next 12-24 months Boyd will explode. Then everyone will change their tune saying how they always knew he would come good. Give the kid a break hes only what 20? Its not his fault the bulldogs gave him such a big contract, they clearly saw something in him. I still am very confident he is going to take the comp by soon very soon.

Ok, so you have no idea. Nice story.

Agreed.

I fully trust our drafting department. We have done extremely well in our drafting, so I suspect they got this one correct too.

Frustrating that he isn't developing quicker (I'm impatient), but I'm sure he will be a star one day

Can you explain then why he averages only 1 contested mark a match. Has only taken 3 from 4 matches this year so that stats is actually trending downwards. Surely this is a massive concern

Well if you think you couldn't have pryed a decent key forward from a club for 1 million bucks a season instead of going with a kid who you would need to spend probably half of his contract developing before you get anything out of him then i believe you have no idea.
