Reckon the many extra members the Swans have gotten since his recruitment has made Franklins contract fairly worthwhile though. Perhaps at the time they were looking to weaken their closest competitor the same way they attempted to weaken Adelaide by taking Kurt but rather then winning flags there may just come a time where they have more members then all Sydney NRL sides combined :)

I mean Lockett did not win the Swans flags either, but he did a lot for the club.
Fair point.

Shame there is no tangible way to work out exactly how much one player brings to a club, is obvious which players attract members and fans, eg Bont for you, Roo for us, Franklin for them, but be interesting to see who exactly does have the most marketability. Would it be GAJ on the Gold Coast based on percentage?

This is like the Watts stuff over the years. He was a skinny underdeveloped kid thrown to the wolves on QB. We developed him poorly no doubt. However he went through years of criticism and only really this year (his 8th) is he starting to play to a level where criticism has ceased. His criticism came purely because he was the number 1 pick. Not because he was earning loads of cash.
Tom Boyd is also a number one pick but his pressure is due to the 1 million dollar a year contract. Not due to his draft pick. Anyway he at present hasn't come on like you'd expect someone on that money to. However the kid has time and I think the dogs considered this in their plans to get him.
His manager drove a hard bargain though no doubt.
Think he'd be copping this criticism without the contract tbh, just doesn't even look like it atm even against the smallest defence in the comp on saturday. Saw some dogs posts about how he could have a good night against our undersized defence and that's a reasonable prediction as we have a very undersized defence but he just looked worryingly lost.

He played ruck 65% of the night. I'm his biggest fan and I think the criticism he got on Saturday night was unwarranted. But I'm biased.

I was a fan as well for a while and backed him up when he got criticism, but he just looked no where saturday night, lost a one on one against Geary who he's got 20cms on just about when he was in front and in perfect position, and then another moment where he gave the worst second effort I've ever seen after having the ball ripped off him. Saw a post on here somewhere that good marks show they are good marks from the start, so I'd want to be seeing something soon from him in that regard to be convinced he'll be a good mark.

Ok that's cool, we all see it differently. I actually saw more aggression in him than I had previously.

He does get a shit go at it though, our mids clog up the corridor inside the 50 so there's nowhere for anyone to lead, so it inevitably ends up being bombed in on top of his head with 4 defenders and 3 Dogs players competing. Makes it nigh on impossible for him to get a clear run at it.

Put it this way, I can count on one hand the number of uncontested marks he has taken in the forward line for us. He was clear twice the other night and Aclay kicked it over his head and Libba kicked the ground. I think it was one of those nights, unfortunately, not taking anything away from you guys.

That's modern footy I'm afraid, unless it's a fast break or immediately from a centre bounce clearance, there's never space in the corridor, he's 200cms, he's supposed to be taking marks in that kind of situation

I'm sure he would but the draft pick barely rates a mention. It's all about the 6 million dollar man.

Yeah but the thing that made him dominant at under age was his size and strength. At the moment he can't lean on the defender the way he did as a kid and take marks. But, like all dominant kids, soon he'll be stronger, and he'll lean on a defender and the defender will move, and he'll find it much easier at the level. We just need to be patient until he's strong enough to control his area in the air and on the ground. He'll get there, but he'll no doubt cop shit on the way through. It's the way of the world unfortunately.

True I guess but no other number 1 pick has such a thing to overshadow the fact they were a number 1 pick, he'd still cop it if he wasn't on millions

I'm unsure about the quality of his hands though which is my main concern

Patton copped it, Scully copped it, Whitfield copped it, they all cop it. I think the money heightens the attention. He's getting both barrels. Money AND a pick 1.

Don't know where Patton and Whitfield have copped it, one has had 2 ACLs and the other is a gun, scully went to melbourne in their golden era of terrible development, so let's cut him some slack.

Patton has copped it for ages, even knees aside. He's been labeled too slow and too immobile almost exclusively. He's found form this year though, which is good for him.

I'm less concerned about that. He catches it pretty naturally - and I've seen a lot of him at both levels.
if this were true though he would've clunked a few against us, he should've been able to have a similar impact he did in U18s as he was against a very small defence, but he looked miles off it.

I honestly can't remember seeing Patton 'cop it' maybe he's been said to have not lived up to the hype, but generally everyone has cut him some slack as he's had the two recos, and whitfield has always been good, wouldn't have copped a word of criticism.

He wasn't great, don't get me wrong (and I've refused to watch the replay so far) but the only mark I was disappointed he dropped was one at half back when he has a clear run at it, got over the pack, and spilled it. That was the only mark I thought was disappointing. What other ones were there? I can't really remember. There was one at 3 quarter time that looked a mark live, not sure why it wasn't paid but can't really remember others off the top of my head.

Shame Griffen did not wanna be traded to Adelaide though, right about now a kid like Josh Jenkins would be scary in the Dogs forward line.

I see Boyd somewhere between Justin Koschitzke and Tom Hawkins as to where his career might go. A big ruckman/forward who on his day can demolish any opposition but never really had the continuity, luck and perhaps even application to do so at times like Kosi, or a huge forward who at his best puts the fear in his opponents but at his worst gets suspended for stupid things :p

Oh he's copped it, don't worry. There was so much discussion whether the game had gone past him (even recently). Knees definitely didn't help though, poor bugger.

I see him as a better kicking version of Hawkins, however he hasn't come into the game built the way Hawkins was. Jenkins is 28. This is part of the problem, people compare him to older players and expect similar output - it's unrealistic.

Nah Jenkins I meant moreso as in what he could do for you now, though to be fair most of your fans did not see last season coming so it made sense at the time to go young with Tom Boyd. In your window now someone like Jenkins would be a fair asset to have :)

JJ to JJ has a nice ring to it ;)

there was one where he was dead set in the perfect position against Geary who is a midget in defenders terms and he just didn't get near taking the mark, also plenty of packs where he just didn't look dangerous at all
