hes improved out of sight , continues to do the right things . so much pressure on him to keep his spot though , as the rest of the back 6 are pretty much set in stone. He has goldy breathing down his neck.

I love everything Toovey does, in fact the one thing he needs to do is back himself to run a little more.

He is probably the most team orientated player we have, he simply does everything in his power to help the team out each week, sometimes to the detriment of his own game.

For those saying we have "flashier" or more talented half backs that could replace him, you are simply wrong, as Tooves shows every week that there is still a huge need in the AFL for "defense first" half backs.

Rarely, if ever, gets beat one on one, even in the games we play poorly in, and simply put is so far inside our top 22 it would take a miracle for someone to displace him.

He's really grown on me as a player. He always puts in 100%. He chases hard, tackles hard and has pace to burn. He also doesn't give his opponent an inch. How good was the chase and tackle on Stanton. Offensively, he isn't the greatest player, however thats what Obrien, Shaw, Maxwell and Johnson are for. Hanging for this sunday! TOOOOOOOOOVZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Whats not to like about Toovey? He has pace, is a good shut down defender and he's had to work to get where he is so he gives every game his all. I like Toovs, reckon he deserves a spot in our 22 as much as anyone.

Been very serviceable last few weeks, prepared to do the hard work and plays a role each week for which we have few readily apparent options.

Good article and interview. Seems like a nice bloke and has a great work ethic, which which makes it harder to stand firm on my less than positive opinion of his footballing ability. I understand what he brings to the side as far as structure and the ability to play as a small defensive player, but i have a hard time swallowing his flaws. Overall I'm happy to play him if he is providing a genuine lockdown performance, but recently he is either being beaten by his opponent, or just playing on someone who isn't that dangerous. He kept Morton quiet in the Hawthorn game, but is it really worth taking someone in who stuffs is up too often for an AFL player, and offers little offensively, just to stop Morton?
He's most definitely improved a lot, but i'm still not convinced. A lot of knowledgeable posters like him so there may be something i'm missing, and as i said, he played well against Essendon so I'm fine with him for now. I just fear a 'Toovey moment' might cost us in a cutthroat final where mistakes are deadly, in the same way Dawson and Clarke blew it in last years Grand Final. :(

I in previous years could never see the benefit of Toovey being in the side. I thought he was holding us back. I'm very glad to say I know sweet f**k all when it comes to picking who's going to succeed and improve and who's not.

Well done Toovs, you've made me look like an idiot. You're not the first and won't be the last.

Kind Regards

Toovey is a pet favourite of mine, absolutely love his work all over the ground, tries harder than most and looks like a deer in the headlights 100% of the time.

Who else LOVED his goal on Sunday?

Top article, but I'm still not convinced Toovey is the long-term answer. Credit to him though, he's a hard worker.

The long term answer to what? He's done quite a good job as a shut down small defender for the last year, he's clearly earned a place in the team and carved out his niche. As he grows in confidence he'll add more run and carry to his game, he clearly has the pace to.

I can't really think of who we'd replace him with. Simon Buckley perhaps but Buckley hasn't shown he's good enough to replace Toovs yet.

I liked him from his first game, then dropped off him as his form fell away before he became a permanent fixture in the team. Blight may be the player to threaten his spot, but the backline would not be the same without Tooves throwing himself around with gay abandon.

The guy is only going to get better at his role with experience. It will take a good player to dislodge him. He is versatile and when he does become more offensive, his speed will be a real asset. Everyone loves a battler who makes good.

I found his comments about being preoccupied by his kicking and learning not to focus on it when he had the ball interesting. Tooves may or may not be a long term player, but he continues to hold his spot in a team with great depth.

Disappointed Tooves didn't win the play vote of the day on the Collingwood web site. Problem was he had two plays of the day. Apparently he scored 60% across both of his efforts combined, while Didak scored 40% for his one inclusion.

I also like the fact that he is studying at uni. It's surprising how many players do nothing besides play football.

Bloody conspiracy I reckon.:D
Lets hope he gets another nom this week?:thumbsu:

The answer to the question "who is the best player to play HBF for us". Toovey is it now, but his frequent cases of fumblitis and occasionally shankitis give me cause for concern. I agree that he has the potential to add run-and-carry to his game, and I still think there is room for improvement.

Personally, I think Blight could be a better half-back in the longer term. He has great hands, is a damaging long kick, and is very strong overhead. He isn't as quick as Toovey however and not as strong defensively yet.

Keep in mind I said I'm not yet convinced he's the long-term answer; far from saying he isn't the long-term answer.

Fair enough. But I think he will be the long term answer just by way of being the best option while other players are still developing. Maybe Blight will take his spot but I dunno if Blight will even debut this year, and once he does it'll probably take him 20-30 games to really hit his straps, thats a couple of years trying to find a replacement defender while we're in our premiership window, I don't think it's worth it.

has improved out of sight. Used to worry when he went near the ball, now i feel a lot more assured when he gets, just is backing himself a lot more these days.

His work rate is better than anyone I have seen in a long while.

Yes he hasn't got the skill of the better players but he gets pick each week on work rate and what he does with what he's got.

Didn't he kick 3 or 4 goals in his debut game and nearly won it for us.
3 goals vs. Richmond, I think we won the game fairly comfortably from memory but Tooves was okay. Marked one ball between his legs after fumbling the mark... but went on to kick the goal. :D
