A blockbuster deal in which Western Bulldogs captain Ryan Griffen would be traded for Greater Western Sydney's Tom Boyd is looking increasingly likely.
Under the deal, which is under discussion and yet to be finalised, Griffen and the Dogs' first pick, No.6, would go to the Giants in return for Boyd.
Boyd has been offered a deal believed to be six years and in excess of $6 million.
While this represents a backdown by the Giants - who had vowed Boyd would not be traded under any circumstances - the club will emerge with Griffen and an extraordinary draft yield of picks 2, 6 and 7.
If the deal is completed, the Giants will be in a position to trade for pick one from St Kilda.
Talks are continuing between the parties but it appears as though GWS has given ground. The club is understood to have come under pressure from the AFL to acquire seasoned players such as Griffen in order to lift its fortunes.
The argument against doing the deal was the message it would send to its other young stars coming out of contract, but the counter is that there are some within the AFL industry who believe the youngsters will stay if the club is more successful in the next 12 months.
Griffen's request for a trade to the Giants was the bombshell of the trade period, leading to the exit of Dogs coach Brendan McCartney last Friday.
The 28-year-old had vowed not to return to Whitten Oval despite the removal of McCartney.
Boyd was the No. 1 draft pick last year and is one of three highly-rated young key forwards along with Jon Patton and All-Australian Jeremy Cameron.
The Giants, should they wish, would have the option of drafting a replacement tall forward in Peter Wright if they retain pick four.
However, the club is more likely to select midfielder Christian Petracca if it lands the No. 1 pick.

The boys on Trade radio really giving it to GWS, Plough called GWS 'weak' if they leave Griffen high and dry.

It seems the deal could well happen.
Reckon we will forward pay as much of Griffen's salary as possible. Hope if P6 goes to them something good comes back in addition to Boyd, if not well its overs....

Frankly I'm disgusted at the AFL for not doing anything about this situation.
GWS take a player touted as our future captain, and we get under compensated compared with another club who have a player of far less talent and durability taken from them. GWS then, in a blatant attempt to capitalise on turmoil in our club, target our current captain, and push the situation so that we will be completely uncompensated should we seek for a better option elsewhere.
GWS then hold us to their terms and nothing else in negotiations so that there is no way we can possibly get an equitable deal, even though one of their players would like to come to us in return. The fact that we are targeting another player is then criticised by all and sundry in the media as an outrageous move, and we are treated as if we are despicable (AFTER GWSHAVE INITIATED THIS, TAKEN OUR CAPTAIN, AND MADE IT SO WE CAN ONLY DEAL WITH THEM!). Collingwood never received this treatment for Buckley. Then again, they are Collingwood...
It is clear that the AFL does not care about us as an organisation, and are not going to do a thing for us in the coming 24 hours. It really makes me wonder - why does Melbourne get preferential treatment over us in circumstances that are equally or less dire? Why does a club that they have developed directly at our expense, both in draft picks and in player poaching, get the upper hand in this context? The AFL owe us, and must do something about this.
It just goes to show that a low SES club with supporter.... I feel like we are a blue ribbon seat that never receives any development money because we dont know any other way - yet in another low SES swing seat which could go to another support, they provide preferential treatment even in outrageous circumstances... No respect to the club or the western suburbs.

GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said the club had changed its position and decided to trade Boyd after reviewing a number of factors.
“First, the Bulldogs have made a revised and attractive offer which now includes their first draft pick (six), an elite player in Ryan Griffen and salary cap assistance in relation to his contract.
“Second, our coach Leon Cameron has consulted the leadership group and they have agreed they want a united and loyal playing group heading into an important season in 2015.
“Third, as a club we are proud to represent Western Sydney and Canberra and it’s critical that our players share that value. Clearly Tom doesn’t and the best course of action is for him to leave the club.
“We believe this is an excellent trade in the best interests of the club and gives us the best possible chance of achieving success in the coming seasons.
"It significantly strengthens our playing list and gives us picks 4, 6 and 7 in next month's draft which can also be traded.
"We are delighted to have Ryan Griffen at the club. He is not only a great talent but a person with strong values and brings more experience and maturity to the list."
Griffen, 28, has played 202 games for the Bulldogs after making his debut in 2005. He is a dual best and fairest winner and was All-Australian in 2013.
Tom Boyd, 19, played nine games for the GIANTS in 2014.
