No I wouldn’t .

Happy to trade picks and or a quality player if need be however , I would not want to roll the dice on an untried player at AFL level , albeit a players with huge potential.

Rather trade for a known, proven performer such as Coniglio.

Trading for an untested , untried player at the next level is like trading in the futures market.

So I would play the conservative line and trade for proven known player with a history and track record of delivering.

To use last year, by way of an example Brisbane were shrewd and crafty by prising Neal away from the Chevrons.
They got the exact piece of the jigsaw puzzle that they were after.

To me that’s excellent trading and use of draft capital.
The combination of gun proven mid + wanting to jump ship is pretty rare though.

Still flabbergasted that Carlton traded their first pick
Adelaide smashed that trade if they can make finals and Carlton continue to struggle. Need to try and get these types of deals coming our way, only way you can get into that top 10 while challenging for the flag is to play the future picks. Should have gone after Sydney’s first rounder as well if we believed their second was going to be good value.

Matt Rowell is a gun and would take a Hawks like deal to get him ie the Trent Croad to Freo to get Luke Hodge ..

Would you do MaGovern for Pick 1 ??

I agree with Monocle and I would do a straight swap of Coniglio for McGovern but not Pick 1. McGovern is A grade but with Barrass, Brander and Allen, I think we would be a better team with Coniglio than McGovern but it is a close call. I am sure this point would divide the supporter base.

If it was straight picks, you would think McGovern would be worth more than pick 1. I would say pick 1 and a decent second rounder would be closer to his trade value. Lever was worth 2 first round picks and he is less proven that Gov (albeit pick 1 has a premium above 2 mid first rounders, hence the need to add a second rounder).

Kelly is a conflicting one for me.

Currently he looks like an A+ grade midfielder but he is playing in a midfield with Abblet , Selwood and Danger and could even possibly win a Brownlow in the form he has been in. Over the years we have traded in players to make an immediate impact into our midfield ( Wellingham , Redden and Jetta) but they took a couple of years to fit in and even with that two turned out to be better suited as HBF's which while handy has never solved our midfield issues. Yeo surprised me in that we turned an AA HBF into an A grade mid and Redden has been handy in the midfield but no superstar.

So do we pay 800+ for Kelly and no doubt have to give up our first rounder or do we package picks and try to get into the top 10 to draft a potential star? We have drafted well in the KP stocks so we can draft the best mids early.

Danger and Ablett were playing forward against Essendon (on one leg) and Selwood was in the stands. I don’t buy that argument really.

I do agree that we’ve struggled to integrate established players into our system which is a coaching issue IMO.

Absolutely not.

Just from a gameplay prespective he is probably the most valuble player in the AFL right now. Just his presence alone changes how the opposition team players. He is such a good defender that forwards actually try to man up on him rather then the other way around.

Not trading that for potential.

I agree with Monocle

I would say he's worth a lot more than pick 1. He's close to the best / most important player in the comp. Pick 1 is still a lottery and you'd have to land a superstar mid to make it worthwhile. You're much more likely to end up with a Tom Scully than you are a Josh Kelly (I know he wasn't pick 1).
Teams overvalue draft picks and even at the top end you're highly to get a serviceable 150+ player but not an outright superstar.

I would trade McGov for a Cogs/J Kelly type. Taranto too... geez GWS have a good midfield!

Would not trade for just pick 1/picks. Look at the Judd trade, if we had 1 (Cotch/Kruez), 3 (Masto) & 20 (Notte to be) instead of JK, 3 & 20 we would have comfortably 'lost' that trade.

He certainly is, but Anderson is better!
I wouldn't do McGovern, bird in the hand theory. I was more thinking trading our first rounder and Sydney second round, let's call it picks 12 and 21 for pick 1 or 2.

Read recently that the top 2 in this years draft are miles ahead of the next best. 12 & 21 wouldn't get it done.
