Fair point Nuggo but I was thinking that there would be a fair chance that Johnstone might retire or not return and Lukey could be a retirement chance as well. Johnstone if he does come back would be on a lot less coin than he was this year. Selwood would be on a reasonable wage and I can't see him being back next year.

Are we required to pay a higher portion of Fevola's salary next year?

Charman, Buchanan, Selwood, Johnstone, Power were all getting paid well over their worth this season. If any remain on the list for next year pay cuts are required. I guess Brennan and Rischitelli potentially leaving would free up some more space.

A worry for me is after the season we have had it may be a little difficult to attract decent players to the club.

I'm so sorry sir. I bow down before you on one need and beg forgiveness.
Sorry mate I admit that I was wrong. I was just pissed off as I had explained many times that people couldn't use those picks this year! I am very sorry that my un called for behaviour was directed at you and I am not be sarcastic I mean it:)

Cheers LS!

Will be interesting if any clubs do decide to use their compensation picks this year or next year. It kind of requires them to predict where they are going to be on the ladder in 2-3 years time and then decide whether it is worth taking them early. With the first round stretching to pick 25, you'd think most, if not all, will wait until the compromised drafts are over.

Just thinking any chance that charmo will go gold coast?

Like Quigley said in another thread, the most likely scenario with a Charman trade is that we let him go for an absolute nothing pick in order to free up salary cap space. For that to work, another club has to see the value in him though. May be a hard sell with his injury history.

Most likely that we'll just have to wear it, financially and in terms of the list spot. Looks like it was bungled in hindsight, but he was at the top of his game when he was last out of contract and I remember being stoked that we had secured him for 4 years (as was pretty much everyone else), so I am not in a position to criticise.

You can't use the picks until 2012 and you have to nominate at the start of the season if you are going to use it for that years draft(they also have a five year shelf life from when you receive them).

Any chance you guys making a play at Harbrow since he's reportable wanting to go back to QLD?

*whisper* Pay them and they will come

To a degree I guess. We have missed out on a few trade targets over the years though due to players nominating other clubs as their preference despite us offering the same contract conditions.

Motlop we chased only for him to choose Port. Lovett was a target who ended up wanting to play for the Saints. Priddis decided to remain at the Eagles after an offer from Voss. Chris Heffernan even baulked at a move after we had just won a premiership (which did work okay for us as we got Caracella).

Not a trade target scenario but Murphy from the Blues rejected our offer and took his chances in the draft (admittedly he did have a good indication from the Pies and Blues he would go 1 or 2).

Our best hope IMO is targeting a young bloke not getting a game in the ones and offering a competitive contract with the promise of game time in the seniors.

I think you'd be crazy to use them until after next year's draft given GC and GWS plundering the first two. However, since they're tradeable, it wouldn't surprise me to see a few transferred from club to club for a premium on what they appear to be worth as a normal X rounder. If a club expecting to be highly placed for the next couple of years transfers their pick to one low on the ladder for the next few years, those mid-round picks suddenly become a lot more potent as it could potentially jump 15 places in the draft.

What's Varcoe's contract status? If Ablett stays will they have to offload someone?

Varcs is out of contract, and the club's been upfront all year in saying in Ablett stays we will have to offload a senior player, but it'll be someone older rather than Varcoe, he's very much the future down here.

I'm hoping the fact that his brother is here too will help us keep him.

All good, not a word of sarcasm. ;)

I'm a fan of the Collingwood recruiting model which basically identifies the things that they require of each player as a must have before they draft them and then work on the rest.

Not sure of all of the criteria but in recent times they have focussed on kids that are excellent kicks, (no ball butchers - barham would be the exception). They take all types and sizes but they must be able to kick. The then back their development system in to do the rest.

I would like us to use the same criteria on all selections.

I really hate Reimers, but a player like him would probably sit in well with our playing group. Having said that, i still don't think it is worth doing any trading this year. Not unless we are going to do straight swaps, like Selwood for Reimers or something like that (not a trade im putting out there, just using as an example).

We need to use our draft picks this year, get some silky mids and take a KPP or 2 around the middle as project players.

Has Rischitelli re-signed?

What you be after for him? 2nd rounder? I don't think he is worth a first.

I doubt he'll leave Queensland considering he baulked at the chance last year but I'm just curious considering we were after him a few years ago and after what happened last trade week.

He is worth a hell of a lot more than he was last time he was out of contract when clubs, particularly yours, started to circle.

He is most likely to win our B&F so we would want fair compensation. I would be after a late 1st rounder-early 2nd rounder particularly as he is most likely GC bound and if he polls well in our B&F as expected we would get decent compensation according to the uncontracted player rules.

You and your Essendon friends on your trade thread believe you just have to ask and he will walk to you. It seems some of you want to chase Brennan, Rischitelli and Sherman while giving up a 2nd rounder and Neagle :o in exchange.

It seems a 2nd round pick plus rubbish gets you anything these days. Ablett, Pavlich, Judd et al are all worth a 2nd round pick + Neagle/McKinley/Jacobs/Young etc. Love how people think combinations like those are somewhat equivalent to a decent player or a top pick. Of course no one wants to give up a first round pick, but they figure they have an opportunity to pick up something decent and get rid of a fringe player at the same time.

Brock McLean was traded for pick 11.

Lovett traded for pick 16.

Rischa is worth a lot more. A midfielder in his prime and starting to finally show the potential that was seen in him early on. A 1st round pick + 3rd/4th round pick would be more realistic.

Reading around the other teams' boards our players are once again highly sought after. Answer me this opposition supporters, why would we willingly give up:

Clark
Rich
Banfield
Leuenberger
Brennan
Rischitelli
Redden

????

These seem to be the popular choices for opposition teams. All for the usual going rate of a 2nd rounder plus a trash player of course.

Some genius on the WC board offered to give us Q. Lynch for Fev. Tempting.

I'd like for us to have a crack at getting Whitecross from Hawthorn. We need to try and bring some QLD boys home because that is our only chance of recruiting players half decent at the moment.

Does anyone know if GC "SUNS" have a recognized ruck prospect? if not, does that mean that our boy's can or would be tempted by the darkside! our rucks will be a strength next year and should be considered off limits.
Personally this year the only trades should be for players wanting to leave or delists hoping for a second chance. Okay we were crap this year but i'll put this as a once off.

GC have Zac Smith who is a very good prospect and would be doing pretty well in the B&F despite being only an 18/19 year old ruck playing against men in the VFL. GC may look to add a big experienced body but he is their future and I would be surprised if they paid big money for someone. They will be looking for someone who can shoulder the number 1 role next year before fading into the background as the number 2 once Smith is up to AFL speed. I rated Smith as the best ruck prospect available last year bar none.

That would seem to be a great fit for Charmo. Where is he at?
