And, I'm not sure that a compensation pick for the lost free agent will ever help the team lower down the ladder, especially in the short term. If Frawley goes to Hawthorn, almost certainly they will be strengthened and Melbourne weakened next year even if they pick up a great prospect in compensation. And, I don't even think it will be of benefit in the long term either, because when that kid matures and becomes a very good player (like Frawley), the same thing may happen again with that player wanting to play finals in a top team. The lower teams may always be full of great prospects but never be able to rise to the top.
I agree, the current system runs the risk of turning the bottom sides into training grounds for the more successful clubs and has very real chance of creating a two tier competition.
I'd actually like to see FA treated like the father / son system.
Remove compensation all together.
Player x nominates Club of choice, salary and contract length.
Clubs bid for the players services using draft picks with the nominated club having the advantage of simply matching the bid with their next available.
If the nominated club doesn't bid then the club with the highest bid must honor the salary and contract length requested.
All of this to happen the week before the draft with the F/S so we know who has what picks.
This way the big clubs don't just get to top up for free.
Thoughts?
