Yes but other option is everyone retire and end up with all dross. Tapping up star players, getting them to come to ur club and have someone else take draft risks is way to go. Especially if AFLPA want to ruin afl and have free agency ASAP.

I think Hawks have shown they are more than comfortable and competent at doing this.

However, past performance in something is does not always guarantee future returns. Their previous FA grabs have been very astute. Save for Lake at the time, who some people questioned, there was no doubt they were getting quality in. Vickery given his past spudliness is going to be a test for them. So is JOM with his injuries. This is going to be a very interesting couple of years ahead for the whole comp I think. Because I think Hawks are manipulating the system perfectly. Getting other teams to take the draft risks and cherry picking the FA market to fill their needs.

No harm if he does

He wanted out but couldn't find a buyer. So if he has another poor year we delist him - it's not like we've missed an opportunity to get a trade for him this year.

If he has a good year we either re-contract him on the back of improved form or we lose him to a Victorian club but at least have a chance of getting a trade return for him.

Oddly enough, considering he's been an under performing player him staying is actually a good result

I agree with this. It was always going to take him a while to develop, another year is a good outcome. Will be great to see how he goes in the pre season.

Freo must be pretty stoked, next year they'll look very different will have added Hill, McCarthy, Hamling, and Bennell (given he didn't play last year), injury permitting will get full seasons from Fyfe (5 games), Sandi (5 games), Johnson (4 games), and whoever they get using pick 7. Only losing a cooked Pav and Barlow, and a useless Mayne, and a 4 pick downgrade in the first.

And with a bottom 6 draw next year. Will play finals for sure.

I wouldn't go that far. It's a possibility for sure but people always assume zero injuries when they look at a best 22 and think "that's a finals team"... Historically though, teams don't go from 3 wins to a top 8 lock.

Back away. Slowly.

Always worry when this word is used to describe a player. Usually means, shitloads of talent but inconsistent or lazy or f****d in the head.

The proof will be in the pudding I guess .

Also didn't realise this word had so much implications so maybe a poor choice of words ..

I'm not a Kersten fan, but he'll help if they get him as well.

Fyfe, Benell, Neale, S Hill, Mundy, B Hill, Blakely, Pearce, Weller, Pick 7, gives them a pretty deep and decent midfield, their top 5 would be the match of almost any teams top 5.

Having said that when Fyfe can't come back at 100%, Benell is out "calf", Mundy gets old, and Pick 7 is a dud, it will all fall apart...

Our loss in week 1 of the finals made their bottom 6 draw harder, seeing as we're no longer the single top 6 team they play twice.

Bet they draw Hawthorn though :D

Getting Hamling, Hill and probably Kersten in when you had no 2nd rounder after trading it last year is a good result. Helped massively by the Giants virtually gifting you McCarthy and Collingwood going mental with a FA offer for Mayne.

If you keep that pick 40 and still get Kersten it's been a very good trade period for you that capitalises fully on Ross not just putting the cue in the rack but locking the room it was in as well

Historically they don't go from minor premiers to 3 wins either though...

It was slightly tongue in cheek, but the media tend to use this word when they're referring to someone who can do some ridiculously good things but don't tend to do it consistently. Think Sampi, Motlop etc.

I have very little idea about any of the potential draftees so don't take anything I say in relation to them with any kind of authority.

As good as a signing Mitchell is, I really hope the club isn't going to get the mindset that they can just sit back now and do nothing. We still need to look for more midfielders or try and work our way up the draft order. I wouldn't be against trading for another first rounder this year with future picks due to the midfield strength in this draft. This trade period has the potential to be a big turning point for our premiership tilt but we will have to stay busy and try and add some more quality either through trades or the draft this year. Mitchell is a superstar but he's also only a short term fix.

Assuming these guys slot straight and play their best footy. There will be an adjustment period.
They also have to survive the ultra negative football game plan Lyon throws at his teams.
It's called rediscovering their identity;)
