If Gary goes, do we use our 2 picks we get to trade for youth? or to trade for "current" needs....go for another flag next year? or try and do the impossible and match the Suns and Sydney new side?

Possible players that i am aware of that havent signed yet. Some good some not so good.... love to hear of any others and who you think from this list would be good for us.

FEVOLA: obviously an idiot but truth is, football wise would be the best key forward we woulda had this decade......i understand huge risk, but with no risks.......if brisbane delist him?

COX: from last i heard he was still uncontracted for next year, Coast r not gonna feature in finals next year and could see going to Cats as 1 last chance to win a flag. He still has some juice in the tank and if Blake leaves, then we can use him as ruck and then Ottens can play the role he was recruited to which is FF CHF. the upside with Cox obviously is he can go forward, so can rotate with Ottens and also gather 30 possies.

POWER: has not resigned with the brisbane lions yet, sure he is 28, but if we r looking for flags now, he would add a great service

MOTLOP: Has stated on Adelaide news he would like to be traded to cats, keep in mind at hes best he is a class player, and in the cats hed be a 3rd string mid/ crumber so he could go under the rador , similar to Burgoyne. He is 28 as well but dont forget he was a 8th pick overall draft pick...he has had a bad year at Port due to injuries and other reasons. Will probly be too big of a injury liability but.

WELLS: i am pretty sure wells is out of contract still, he would add great pace to our midfield

THOMPSON: although he will stay at North Melbourne, why didnt the cats pick him up 2 years ago? he is from geelong, played in the VFL geelong grand final, played well? we woulda loved to have Thompsons services this finals series. and he woulda been dirt cheap.

All of these guys i am sure would take pay cuts to play in a premiership.

if we lost ablett, we could get all 5 of those guys.

MUPRHY: one thing we dont want to do is recruit a player who doesnt care for the club...aka JUSTIN MURPHY, came for 1 year and then left...played good footy before coming to Cats and played better foot when he left.....

motlop a 3rd string mid/crumber?
the only 1 on that list id chase would be cox & that depends on what ottens does

Wells has re - signed.

Fev is trouble.

Motlop wants to be with his kid in Perth.

We would bank our dreft picks for when they are of some value.

What about Josh Smith from North Melbourne ??

heard today that he has been delisted

Big KP forward who has shown quite a bit at VFL level but never really given an extended period in the seniors. Reckon if we could get him in the draft would be a great depth player and would be able to fill the void for mooney if hawkins ends up being a flop

Thoughts ???

Even if Ablett left, we wouldn't have much spare cash.

No way we could get Cox and Fev (nor would we want Fev), Power is too old, and the other three are average footy players.

If we do trade away players then i'd want to be getting young players or draft picks in return. Time to rebuild the list with youth. I wouldnt want any of these guys, in the long term they are of no use.

Fevola? Uhmmm.....

Draft picks is the only thing we will be interested in. Accept that and you'll save yourself a lot of time listening to SEN over the next month.

There is absolutely no way we will start trading for anything of substance. We need to concentrate on youth and our own development....which has a proven track record from 2000! We have a good group of young players at the moment and i'm hoping we can add 4 more this year. Besides, i don't think we will have salary cap room to pay for experienced players.

I have hope that Menzel, Christensen, Brown, Motlop, Duncan, Gillies, Laidler, West, Dawson Simpson and Drum will all be able to play senior football on some level next year. Thats a fair amount of promise and we should give them every opportunity to develop.

What is likely is that Gamble, Djukerra and Blake will all be able to be traded for draft picks - if this is the case than we should have some substantial savings amongst our salary cap that allow us to 'gracefull' end the services of some of our senior players as we start rotating the youth through the team.

Looking forward to it.

it's a tough time to rebuild. we can trade players, but

my feeling is that if ablett stays we can have another top 4 finish, and hopefully position ourselves well for a crack at the premiership with a good final month. if he goes, then our midfield depth will be shot. we'll get two first round draft picks in return (that ideally wouldn't be used for 2 years to get maximum value)

also, if we decide a rebuild should happen now is there any point in mark thompson staying for the last year of his contract? surely we need him to either commit long term or introduce some kind of succession plan so the future coach is overseeing the team he'll be building. not that i'd like to push him out the door

Disagree with all the OP's calls.

No silly topping up, the only thing I would trade for is a young good ruck 22-24 to replace Otto and Blake, but I don't see anyone we could get.

Other than that, we draft, and back Wells and our system, both of whom have the runs on the board.

Johnny, Johnny , Johnny. Are you applying for the List Management job up in Brisbane?

Actually nice try. You almost sold me on the "Big Softy" Cox , if the ruck was our only perceived weakness (like the Pies perhaps judged last year) then I'd go GreenLight. But we have a broader issue then just one position or one player.

The guts of our success was, is and will be the midfield and its here that we are starting to look too long in the tooth. Sure most of our side could go around again. Probably win a high percentage too and get into the top 4. But does any one really think they would be satisfied in 12months time if we have better than average year and get bundled out like this year again.

From great to good to average , I don't think so

And of course we really don't know yet who will want to go.There will be some trades this year but hopefully they are just to do the right thing by the guys on our list that we couldn't give games to. Even Blake , he is a premiership ruckman and if we seriously don't see him in our best 22 then find a home for him. Player welfare is an important issue. If Ablett goes its already prescribed what we get. One rumour currently floating around has Mackie going , if this eventuates I'd play a bit harder with him and get something tasty form the Suns.

I doubt we will be using to many of the late picks we get anyway as I'd think we would be pretty happy with our Rookies.
Maybe upgrade a bit , if we could get 3 picks earlier than 40 we will probably have done enough for Wells to pull another Rabbit out of the Hat.

SPot on

given that the draft picks from gazza will not be used for 3 drafts, ie to maximise their value

geelong should be trading directly with the gold coast, as they have early picks in this years draft

a package of blake, dj, gamble, mackie could net some early picks in this years drafts, or kids on the gc list who want to come home, and therefore a win win

that would give us an injection of quality youth, with a key draft in 2-3 years, where we load up on great kids, ie 3 first round picks
