very dissapointing this thread... the way some are speaking. to all people around the world i wish all the best for them, their families and their friends who have somebody involved in such a tragic situation. hope for the best for everybody.... for those who have family or friends missing i hope for the best.

That's why glib comments on internet forums have ********ted me to tears since Bali. It doesn't make a crap load of difference. I doubt anyone who says they are hoping and 'praying' are on currently their knees with their heads bowed.
It'd be fantastic for the families of those missing if more people are found alive, but in reality life is going on for the majority of us as per normal. Seeing the hoards of idiots in Adelaide climbing all over each other at 12:01am for a crappy bargain when the shops opened slammed that one home.
Feel free to buy a stairway to heaven like the clown on the general forum who said he "feels better for it" by giving a couple of dollars. I'll save the respect for the people going up there to actually do something.

Geez doesn't look good, but like i said resources are limited and it could take a while. And someone else made the observation that an AFL footballer should have a good chance of surviving something like this.

Niether of the cricket matches stopped for the event, nor did the Boxing Day sales and nor did my holiday. It doesn't mean that we haven't had regard, or concern for the victims of the disaster. Some of us even bowed our heads and prayed. If that means nothing to you, then so be it, but it's directed energy all the same.
Money is frozen energy. I applaud the guy you're talking about who gave a few bucks. Helping people will make you feel better and you have a right to feel better. Not all of us are in a position to drop everything and fly to the affected countries and help, nor do most of us have the skills to be of relative value. Giving money, is like giving time. Those who give it, have earned some respect.
I hope, and pray, that Troy is alright, along with the other tens of thousands of people unaccounted for. A very sad event.
Whilst I can half understand your viewpoint, I don't really see why life should stop as a result, nor that there would be some weird automatic global enlightenment as a result of a single event. Could you please explain why it was that the Northern half of WA was not affected when judging by the map it was just as close to the epicenter as some of the countries that were hit.BRE/\|< said:

I've just donated money and I feel good about it because it's the best contribiution I could make. If you look at the websites of these organisations they all make it quite clear that they don't have the capacity to take on volunteers at the moment and the expense involved in taking volunteers or donations of any goods is too huge, the best you can do is supply money. God, I have no skills in doing anything helpful, I realise that so I know for me to go over there I would literally be in the way.
Donating money though doesn't make me feel better about the catastrophe, I'm certainly not wiping my hands of it and going "hey done all I can, I won't think about it now"... I'm still thinking about it and wondering what else I can do that doesn't seem meaningless, unhelpful or token.

Not a Geo buster, I think I failed every science class(hence the philospsohy degree i suppose, nice and useless) I ever went to but from memory when the earthquake hit it moved the two plates involved violently upward, problem is the Oceania plate (thats us) went about 10m higher than the Asian plate (the effected areas) thus casuing a big push of water from our end to the other end as the water had to go somewhere it went in the direction of the plate movement. Could be wrong but this is how I saw some seismologist explain it the other day.

To be honest, who gives a f**k if it makes a difference or not, that is not what it is all about. It makes me feel better to express my feelings about the situation, I'm a little sick of these people that think they know better, and they should be able to tell me how to react to any situation. If a heartfelt post about someone praying for another human beings wellbeing doesn't do it for you well then that's fine (I'm not a religious person myself, and it doesn't do a lot for me), but in the long run if it you don't like it that's well and good, the post was never made for your benefit anyway.

that may be true fearless but i saw it a different way. the satellite photos of the event you can see the waves hit the west australian coast.
the damage was not great though as the wave ran along the coast and not directly into the coast. from where the epicentre was the path to australia that would have had direct contact was blocked by indonesia hence their large death toll.

These posts show a sense of unity and compassion. I don't agree that if you can't do something in the physical sense to help out, you shouldn't be able to say anything about it.
I would imagine the people that are annoyed by sympathy posts would be doubly annoyed if we didn't even acknowledge the event had happened.

I just watched it - and its the first footage I've seen that shows the real power of the water. Horrible to think what happened to so many people when the water hit.

The players met privately today with Club Chaplain Cameron Butler. Many have just returned from their holiday and were anxious to get together with team-mates and Cameron. Many expressed their distress at the news and were still hopeful that Troy would be found alive and well. The meeting which lasted for more than an hour allowed Cameron and the players to talk about the current situation before returning to training on Monday. There is still no news from Phuket, Trisha remains in hospital and the Broadbridge family hope for good news. Chris Fagan, General Manager, Football Operations said "The most important thing for us as a Club is to support the family. We are a tight knit family who are hoping like hell that one of our own will be returned to us." We will keep members and supporters updated on our website when further information is received
