hey all

i have never been a big fan for byrnes, however, he appears more seasoned and mature than varcoe

his strengths are his tackling and ensurance

however, his lack of goal kicking skill may hurt us on sat

i am ultra confident on grand final day as i think we have ports measure on a number of fronts

dont forget we beat them in adelaide by over 10 goals mid season, and only lost in nround 21 due to the lack of incentive and the missing of

LING
SELWOOD
BARTEL

Go catters

prediction win by 48 points in a low scoring game

Like it or not Kane & Shannon are much the same, they were drafted for their pace and they can't kick.
I'd prefer Shannon because now is not the time to stuff around with things and bringing in someone who can't even play a VFL game because of injury is just asking for trouble.

Dropping Shannon - our 22nd man, is hardly stuffing things around.

he isnt even fast. It is an optical illusion that people believe he is fast due to the fact he has tiny legs and is naturally small. Against Port in our last encounter he was almost caught by Lade whilst running 50 meters.

I seem to remember Wojcinski saying in an interview that Byrnes is the fastest Geelong Player over 20m. Can't rule out a faulty memory though.

Honey, i never said to bring Kane back in. I'd be happy if neither of them represented our club again. But seriously, if you think Shannon has one ounce of talent in his body, you are deluded.

Thank You Joaey you are actually talking some sense. You obviously know what your on about. Your damn close to an appreciation thread.

He was almost run down by Brendon Lade, geez Brendon Lade, not davey or Lovett, Lade. He is not fast.

It is imperative that we get Varcoe on the park for the AFL Grand Final. His defensive pressure is sorely needed even though he dosen't find enough of the ball according to some folk round here.

Prismall, maybe. King, yeah I'd include Kingy. It's unfortunate for Blake I know (someone mentioned the unfortunate Derek Kickett in another post and, yeah I know. You'd be gutted by that kind of decision after putting in for the team all year. Especially if it didn't pay off...) but sadly I think we need to be realistic about this.

So, for me at this stage it's IN: Varcoe, King OUT: Byrnes, Blake
Defensive pressure as in Varcoe being shrugged off when he attempts to tackle?

Key thing is, he does often force the error. I know he gets shrugged sometimes, but how often does Byrnsey lay a tackle up forward?

I wish Shannon would tackle more. I still have his first senior game on tape, and watched it again the other day. Even Dermie was admiring the tackles he was laying - 'straight outta the text book', he'd say. I'd love it if that Byrnsey came out to play.

But will he?

You're right. Varcoe will be a good long term prospect, but needs to spend every day this summer in the gym! Even in the VFL final yesterday he was getting shrugged off. Byrnes is the better of the two at the moment.

Byrnes and Varcoe's career average tackling stats are almost the same - Varcoe's is 3.2, while Byrnes' is 2.9.

But I have to agree with you on that one, he still tries his heart out, but has his lazy moments, such as when he doesn't lay tackles or use his speed.

I really don't know what's wrong, because he did have a lot of promise at the start. It could be a lack of confidence I guess.

I hope that all my patience with him will pay off soon... :(

Exactly! He was being flung off, and people around me were saying "oh good pressure", while I'm like, uh, what the ****?! He doesn't chase players down until they're ages away from him, and by the time he gets to them, they have disposed of the ball.

I agree that Byrnes should come out but not for Varcoe. Varcoe is just not ready for it and has much to learn about the game to succeed in his roll. Prismal is the man.

While Byrnes ball use is frustrating and his lack vision and imagination makes him a very poor decision maker, While Blake got his hands to the ball in the ruck his contribution around the ground was about that of a Eastern Beach Bollard , the fact is our area of deficiency was key forward.

Mooney came good at the end , but it certainly was not his best game. His maturity allowed him to still contribute when having a poor night but this week he must bounce back to being close to his best. Although tempting to unleash the wild side , I’d like him to continue to play within his guidelines , (unless he is called onto be a protector, rather than an instigator). Most of all , I want to see an upbeat Cam. He is our natural leader on the forwardline, at his best he exudes confidence and it can radiate thru the team.I want to see effort and concentration and a willingness to work towards the ball and pull the defenders to him. Mark it , good.If the ball hits the ground , in space from a contested ball it will mean a win for us Chapman, Stokes and Johnson all can shark the grassed ball. Cam has said he is not particularly proud of his previous GF effort, well here is his chance to be our our most important forward.

Nathan is young and when he has the ball is better than most but he is not a strong , reliable mark when under pressure. Really , we have no option but to persist with him but its at CHF that we are weak. If he takes marks , it gives confidence to all upfield that they can kick long to a contest under pressure. It allows quicker movement of the ball and with his finishing ability he would add to the score board more often than not. Its Nathan V Chaplin that is a Key matchup. Nathan marks and I think we win. , Nathan doesn’t and it could be Friday night all over again.

what about tom lonergan?
played a super game in the vfl with 6 goals and best on, could he be on the cards?:thumbsu:
