And lol at you for thinking you'll have an empire. You're doing a commerce degree. Every second person in the world has one of those. Reality is you'll work as an accountant for the next 40 years, doing the same repetitive shit all day in an office.

I'm doing a Commerce degree but won't be qualified to work as an accountant.

There's more to a Commerce degree than accountancy, but I'll think about you when I'm making my millions trading.

second year civil engineering curtin brah here, any quick tips for survival.
whereabouts are you working now btw, if you don't mind me asking?

survival? dont **** around with structural analysis 267. take it ****en seriously in fact put as much effort into it as possible, it held me back 2 years because of ****ing it up. it opens to 268 and design 267 which opens to third year which gets easier after that. ill say it again dont **** with structural analysis 267. spend a good 5-10 hours a week on it, practice those moment distribution questions whenever, and get yourself a good studying team too, dont rely on self pretentious ****s who act they care but really want to see you fail. from my memory fluid mech, methods and materials are alright but analysis was a bitch and a half, i can safely say if you get through 2nd year with flying colours you'll get through easily.

and your hod atm is awesome, we used to have chandler (which you will meet soon) and he was horrid not to mention scott as well. your current hod will hear you out if you have any issues with your course.

now im working at John Holland, in hindsight, the GFC was the best thing to happen, because had I finished when i was expected to, I def wouldnt have had a job, probably would have had to do masters or something.(which are on the cards later) and for the record JH I think are the best paying grad salarys in WA (perth based). Vac work for them open up during the year so keep a look out. They do wanna go big.

I'm enjoying the social life of a uni student too much to have to grow up and be a respectable member of society yet.

im balancing 45 hours a week of work with my social life. a tedious task but it does help.

I'm not in it for the money- I'm in it for the enjoyment of the industry.

People are weighed down so much by wanting vast amounts of money. All you need is enough to live comfortably.

Correct, Money doesn't equal happiness.

I myself am doing a commerce degree (with arts) it isnt about the money but understanding. I want to do a major in economics as I personally feel that I want to gain a better understanding of the system, it's flaws and how it can change. Some interesting subjects in it as well such as the history of economic though (smith, bentham, mill, marx etc).

But i agree money should not be a priority when it comes to life, enough to live comfortably and then being able to enjoy what you do.

And what you said about enjoying the journey is something that i try to live by as well.

Whats the benefit of doing arts with Commerce? I feel they would be very different. Plus art kids are (N).

It's funny you say sa 267 because it's probably what i'm most behind in atm, and im doing materials, fluids and methods all this semester as well. Methods seems like a pain in the arse, surveying seems so ****ing boring so far.

It's true about most arts kids. I struggle with people who are stubborn and snobbs.

But for me, i am someone who values education and social change. I love to think and question even if i will never find the answers. I understand and appreciate how economics is the cornerstone of any society (capitalist, communist, socialist etc etc) and i do actually enjoy learning about it.

For me personally as a 'job' i see myself either going into teaching, government work (not politics) or working at a NPO or starting my own one. That is where commerce will come in handy. I am currently a treauserer (volunteer) at a NPO and the accounting skills i have learnt realy do help me out. But i will never be in it for the money, i have a different path.

But right now i don't really know where i will be in 5, 10 even 1 year. I will just continue to ask myself the neccasery questions.

I don't want to judge how others decide to live their lives but i really do feel people who just pursue moentary gain will continue to be unfulfilled. But thats just my take on it.

I agree Economics just I had it teached to me very poorly and it has given me a bad image of studying it further, same with lots of other students at my uni.

You obviously have a different path to mine, I am not all about the money but I view it as a very important thing to me, fishing all parts of the world is not going to be cheap, travel is expensive.

Depends how you want to travel. If you want to stay in 5 star hotels etc etc it will cost a fortune. But backpacking around staying in hostels while not as glamourous is a different experience and much more affordable.

Considering I will be fishing, I will be taking some pretty expensive gear with me, so a decent cabin/cottage/house etc will be needed, not just a bed in a backpackers. Bit hard to trust people with that sort of stuff.

If you are going to travel you might as well be comfortable.

In my experience, and I have been at uni a while, the most annoying students are local commerce students (international commerce students, despite the bad rap, are not annoying at all) closely followed by law and medicine. Having said that, there are annoying students in every subject area.

Do you want to work as a broker/trader or just a normal finance position? If you want to be a trader you're probably going to have to show you have some trading exp.

I'm aware of that, so that's probably why I'll have to work in a normal finance position to start with to get some funds (or just any old job).
