Votes Vs Hawks

I think we all want Deledio to be something he isn't.

We all expect him to be breaking packs and kicking goals from 50 on the burst. Maybe this will happen in time but Terry is playing him on a HBF during games so its hard to be delivering inside 50 when playing defense.

His speed isn't a plus in a game of footy. He is quick after running for 20-30 metres. Players like Rioli/Davey/White are more useful because they are quick over a short distance.
Not what I'm expecting him to be at all, but if he can get most of his 30 possies up in the middle and hit blokes who are within range of goals, instead of hitting blokes who then have to pass again for someone to have that shot, then he will be a much more dangerous opponent than what he is now. At the moment he doesn't hurt teams as much as he could hurt them.

____ing BS!!! 15 other clubs would have taken him at Number 1!!! if they had the chance. He is!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Not right now in a team that has been crap for his entire career.

5 - Richardson
4 - Tambling
3 - Tuck
2 - Deledio
1 - Moore

Thought the whole backline was pretty good today, sure, the Hawks kicked poorly, but they also got a couple of non-existent free kicks right in front. Richo was excellent again, Tuck shut down Sewell who has been arguably the Hawks' best midfielder so far this year and also got a lot of good touches himself, Tambling showed us another more sustained glimpse of how good he is going to be with some excellent clearances in the middle, Deledio got a stack of it and always used it well, Moore was outstanding on Franklin in the 2nd half and especially in the last quarter when the game was on the line.

Schulz is continuing to play well back and forward, and perhaps surprisingly, is winning a lot of crucial contests at ground level, McMahon was ok, bit loose with his disposal too often though today, King was very good again, McGuane and Thursty were solid. Reiwoldt, Brown and Morton all did their job with some good work up forward. Hyde's tagging was good, his disposal and decision making was very ordinary however. Johnson was pretty good in the centre again, Simmonds was a reasonable effort.

Really, the only players who you couldn't give a rap to today were Polak (the play just passed him by as much as he was poor), Edwards (expect that from the kids now and again, he'll be right), and Newman (deplorable game - unaccountable and toothless in the middle, way too many poor disposals under no pressure).

Disappointing to lose, but it was a solid effort against a very good side and we played four reasonably good quarters.

I think we're a real chance to beat the Saints next week, we match up quite well on them and may just run them off their feet if we play the same positive brand of footy we have the last three weeks and really keep the pressure on them all game like we've done well at lately.

Johnson, Moore and Morton unlucky to miss out.

Another good team performance against a top quality opponent. BUT the Hawks still looked a cut above us so there is still ground to be made up and plenty of improvement required.

The whole team competed really well but we really struggled to match the Hawks at their own game - zoning & dominance of the midfield. They also were just more precise in their clearances a lot of the time.

The positive was when we did get some space we were able to expose them with our speed and skill/movement of the ball. Tambling seemed to be very instrumental in a number of these passages. So pleased he is making a name for himself now!

Another important thing was it was another pressure game under the belts of the young kids. These type of games are invaluable and can't be replicated at Coburg.

Keep playing the kids Terry!!!

Having watched the game again this morning (what work?) I wouldn't overstate Tuck's efforts in quelling Sewell. Hodge and Mitchell played as our target men for a lot more than I originally thought (Sewell was only our target player at contests on 7 occassions I could tell) - given Hodge had such a good game, and Mitchell was relatively busy (two things which hasn't happened with much regularity over the last 12 months) Sewell didn't really get much opportunity to be the #1 guy, reverting to his early '07 role of tagger/3rd midfielder.

Also Brown was a fair bit better than I thought, and Johnson was in lots of your good stuff. Riewoldt wasn't as good as I remembered - almost every touch he had was a standout, but just didn't do enough of it. Promising signs from a youngster, but perhpas not worth the 2 votes I gave him. (Have edited post to give it (back) to Brown).

The umpiring was still deplorable (for both sides) for much of the game - should have known the umpiring we saw in our game v Brisbane (best umpired all year IMO) was an anomaly.

I usually pop over to the opp boards after the game to give my thoughts. If you don't want it, happy for mods to delete.

In terms of the game I thought we really kept you in it with some deplorable goal-kicking, really should have won by 8 or so goals, but bad kicking is bad football, and I must admit - I was really impressed by some of your players (one in particular who is often maligned on the 'intellectual giant' board of bigfooty) and their hardness at the ball. If you play like that every week (minus the indecision, turning back, kicking backwards without attacking intent) then you will see action in September I feel.

5 Richardson - Given plenty of room but used the ball suprisingly well. Kicked straight which was good to see as one of my favourite players. Seems reinvigorated by his 'release' into the midfield - a role I thought he was most suited to nearly 10 years ago (when you still had Ottens).
4 Tambling - When the game was up for grabs in the 3rd, he won 5 out of 6 centre clearances. That's the sort of thing Hodge/Mitchell/Sewell do for us when they are on fire, and I really sat up and took notice. Haven't seen much from him before, but viewed him more as an outside player. Reversing his and Foley (who played more of a 'Mitchell' secondary role in the 3rd) roles may be of benefit to both.3 Morton - Was paid no respect by his opponents, but made the most of opportunities. Hard to tell from TV, but when he got it, often seemed in acres of space - but didn't get it enough. Not working hard enough? or just being ignored by team-mates?
2 Brown - did a lot more in the replay than I noticed live. Very clever player.
1 Tuck - Comprehensively beat Sewell, who seemed content as our 3rd midfielder to minimise impact. Impressive game in the fact he won a lot of contested ball while nullifying someone you would have identified pre-game as being integral to our side.

I wanted to give votes to Hyde for his work on Bateman, or Moore for his work on Franklin, but Franklin was his own worst enemy...if anything the ease with which he was beating Moore contributed to his downfall (he is more accurate kicking from 45+ on the boundary than almost anywhere else due to his unique kicking action) as his shots where almost all straightforward.

INTERESTING observation you make their on Tambling and one I hope a few knockers here on the Richmond board take notice of!!!
Great post pal!!!
