Was watching highlights of Judd's West Coast days, and had a thought that that Judd was the best player i have ever seen in my lifetime. Its a reason i consider him the best player in the game. He was able to accomplish a Brownlow as a player that didn't have a lot a tags due to players like Cousins, Kerr, and Fletcher being around. We were able to see him at his brilliant best.
Fast forward 6 years and Judd wins a second brownlow without support from any of the players around him.

So i pose the question, which would you rather?

WC Judd at his slippery best.

or

Carl Judd who has the ability to single handedly drag his team to the Finals?

either one will do me,still the best player in the competition at both club's

still an amazing player but he's lost the exposiveness that made him so watchable

between 04 - 06 I went out my way to watch WC games just to see him . I can't say that about any other player in my lifetime

It doesnt matter. Its a discussion like everything else on these forums.
might as well just say, why does football matter, why does the brownlow matter.

The Carlton version for mine.

Sure, at WCE he was brilliant but since crossing to the Blues, his game has become complete.

He doesn't have the support network he had at WCE and he carries not only a midfield brigade but an entire teams hopes on his shoulders.

He is the #1 contested ball king and his burst from packs is still very much on show- just not as much as his days with the Eagles.

IMO, he will be remembered moreso as a Carlton legend too.

Ok, let me rephrase... What's the difference.

He's had to re-adjust the way he plays at Carlton.
At WCE he had players blocking for him so he can burst through packs. He doesnt have that luxury at Carlton because none of they guys around are willing to throw everything into a contest the way he does. If murphy simpson and co were to block for Judd the way Kerr Cousins and Fletch did, then Carlton might just be a top 4 side. Until that day when the rest of Carlton are just as dedicated as Judd they wont go anywhere.

Judds Leadership qualities have sky rocketed since being a Blue. has ability to drag a team across the line are outstanding. Can will a team to a victory. Wasn't doing that in early days.

At WCE, he was phenomenal but it was largely due to the midfield brigade being centred around giving him a free run at the pill.

At Carlton, he has been forced to become an elite extractor and an all-round harder contested player, so I think his game has become more complete.

Let's not get carried away. The guy has never been a good kick and has other deficiencies as well.

Wayne Carey is a much better player than Judd as are several others who have played in the last 20 years

Agree he isn't better then Buckley either, WC Judd had a lot of help from the support cast.

For me his kicking has always been sub par, bar his on the run goal kicking which was good.

He was fed the ball into space by a great ruckman and had Stenglien, Fletcher, Chick, Kerr and co blocking his opponents and feeding him in space.

It's his style that makes people 'gush' over him, a lot of his kicks to forwards were too high or dropped short, he is a questionable overhead mark as well.

He is a great player but a tad overrated imo.

At Carlton he has rounded his game out but needs more help still is one of the best all time mids of the game.

lol almost choked overated your kidding...2 brownlows, norm smith medal, captain of a premiership, multiple aa, aa captain overated maybe just a tad hey

I think at this point in time 10 carlton supporters have vote ;).
Judd is still a superstar. But i believe he absolutely peaked at 21. He's lost a bit of pace and explosiveness since which is what made him the best player ive ever seen. Judd at his best was better than anyone ever. And i have seen carey.
I dont think there are many that will call me bias on this. He just has never been quite the same since the groin injury of 07. Still an undoubted champion. But think about his brownlow this year who thought he would win it? not many. Then think of 2004. It was unquestionable he was the best in the comp and would win it.

He has always been an elite extractor. With us he was the best inside midfielder and the best outside midfielder in the game.e lead the lead I think three seasons in row in hardball gets with us.

The idea of Judd being "outside" at West Coast and "inside" at Carlton is not accurate. His inside work is a bit better now, but his kicking has suffered because he finds it harder to get space, even his goalkicking has dropped away a lot. But he is still a dominant player and IMO the best in the league.

Unfortunately his kicking is up there with some 7yo oz kickers.

Judd as an Eagle >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Judd now.

He is a great player but he is not the best ever and that is how i think he is overrated to a degree, I wasn't saying he is crap or even just good he is an elite superstar.

WC Judd comfortably. As someone else pointed out, he got as many clearances and hardball gets in those days as he does now, but also did far more freaky things and kicked bags of goals. At that point in time he was probably the best player I had ever seen on a regular basis while watching a lot of football (I wasn't paying great attention during many of Carey's and Ablett Snr's best years).

Also, the knock on his kicking is a bit OTT, like criticising the premiership team for having an ordinary 2nd ruck or something. If anything, his kicking is suspect now, while it was good at the Eagles.

It wasn't that good at the eagles quite often he would kick over their forwards head on a lead or at their feet, he has always been a great kick at goal on the run but his field kicking is suspect.

Also DE stats aren't a good judge as they include kicks that a forward only has to touch the ball and its a "good kick" even if it is at their feet.:o

Also Judd himself admitted to having to improve his kicking while at WC.

His 06 season was brilliant and his kicking that year was very good.

Judd's been the best player in the competition for the past decade, his best is better than anybody elses best IMO the thing is at WC we saw more of his best consistently, and I'm sure his stats were more impressive. That said, I still believe he's the most dominant mid in the league, not many players can turn a game around off their own boot.

I can't split the 2, he's the same awesome Judd he's always been, so I voted Carlton :p

Definitely the Eagles.

Judd hasn't declined. But his support cast is inferior, he's lost a yard of pace and the role he plays means he doesn't dominate like he used to.

He also played in the best team in the league, one of the best midfield's of all time and has suffered from OP.

Having said that, he's still one of the game's very best players and will be remembered as an all time great at both clubs.

I think this sums it up pretty well. and from a carlton supporter :thumbsu:

This is basically what it boils down to. The Carlton midfield of today is very weak compared to the Eagles of 05/06. This is why I say Judd is a more complete player, due to the way he's adapted a new role and has still been able to dominate in it.
