West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

No way shoud they get any draft concessions.

They are about to sign off on spending a large portion of their cap on a single player when, right there, they have the opportunity to trade him for possible 2-3 picks and a player or 2.

That would completely remove any need for draft assistance(on top of the pick they hold and the Allen compo) and in-turn leave the draft to not be completely and utterly compromised even further than it already is.

Complaining the drafts are compromised, making it hard to rebuild, and then requesting draft assistance is the biggest hypocritical stance a club can make.

WC don’t deserve concessions because they could trade their best player for draft capital? That makes no sense.

Look at the JHF trade for example. A former pick 1 traded for picks 2 and 3 whilst trading out pick 1. There no value in that.

Especially when that player is in his second season.

It's the dumbest argument on this site by a very long way.

Exactly. For a list that needs talent, trading out Reid (their most talented) makes no sense. It’s kicking the can down the road so to speak, prolonging the rebuild.

What's the likely priority pick if awarded?
End of first round?

Draft assistance does not automatically mean a priority pick.

We will be happy with extra rookie list spots so we can put on our NGA kids without having to get rid of mature depth or existing kids that need more time.

Considering most of our NGA's are not rated highly chances are no picks will be required to match or we use a 3rd rounder to match.

But this scenario isn't very exciting, doesn't make very good headlines or get clicks.

So the media just keep repeating PRIORITY PICK......PRIORTY PICKS.......so opposition fans riot and overreact.

And here they all are.

If you weren't a Mod geez......I would seriously go to town.

You talk some serious crap and are one of the biggest trolls on here.

Can't even put you on ignore.

Clubs said that have they?

Gee, what's the difference between those 2 players and Harley Reid, I wonder?

Why don't you trade Lalor for more picks this year? :drunk:
Did I mention Reid find other capital. Both Bolton and Rioli we're in our top 5 players.
What's Lalor got to do with it lol
Nah you just want a handout act like a top club and own it and have a strategy

What's the context? The context is who I quoted before saying we should trade Reid for more draft picks and you continued on from what I said.

So in regards to that, Bolton and Rioli's age vs Reid's, hence the Lalor mention.

Now if you weren't talking about that, then who do you suggest we trade out, considering we got rid of Barrass last year(with McGovern now medically retired this year...) and Allen, our co-captain, is on the way out this year.

Nobody else other than Waterman has currency and I'm sure we'd like to have at least one experienced key forward while the others develop.

Nobody else is worth anything meaningful.

Richmond were simply fortunate that 3 of their best players wanted to abandon ship at the same time and were worth decent draft capital.

“Fortunate”.

Your mob is a disgrace. This is the most embarrassing thing your club has done this season and that’s saying a lot given how dog sh*t your performances have been.

Hard to go back in time to find the articles but the cap on spending was largely driven by Hawthorn who had a tantrum about us after we took Daniel Pratt from them and Box Hill. At the time Pratt was hired as the very first defensive co-ordinator coach... ie. not a thing. In 2014 we had assistants to our assistant coaches. So Hickmott was defensive coach and Pratt was his assistant. Hawthorn didnt like the fact we had all these coaches and threw a wobbly. A ton of other clubs like St Kilda supported it and off we went

If you go back to 2013/2014 we had 3 more assistant coaches then everyone else at the time which was the driver behimd the change

I was surprised when I saw you mention Hawthorn as one of the teams driving the soft cap given we were in the top 2-3 richest clubs at the time of its introduction, one of the highest spenders and have been subjected to one of the highest 'financial equalisation' of any club. In fact, I have just double checked and Hawthorn receive the 'base rate' (lowest possible funding from the AFL), exactly the same as West Coast. There are many articles on this, including this one: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/af...s/news-story/3425722d96a28b632b3eeae1a17c5a6b

I'd be interested in reading more on the story you are talking about. It seems strange given Daniel Pratt was the captain of Box Hill (and not employed at Hawthorn) in 2013 and in 2014, he was appointed development coach (a very normal position) at West Coast, replacing Adrian Hickmott (https://www.afl.com.au/news/50935/pratt-joins-simpsons-roo-crew-at-west-coast). He didn't become backline coach until 2018. He was also not employed at Hawthorn in any coaching capacity as far as I can tell. May you please share anything that speaks to Hawthorn wanting a soft cap (genuinely interested as it has not been in our interests).

You can admit you were wrong and move on. Not that hard
You created a fantasy about the soft cap and somehow connected this fantasy to one about draft concessions.

It makes a shitload more sense than allowing them to compromise the draft even further by handing them picks.

Another year and another team asking for handouts, what a joke of a league.

I do not blame West Coast at all for asking, they are in a horrible situation and the league has been willing to help bail other clubs out. So this is not at all a complaint about them in particular.

However at some point this just has to stop, the constant meddling in the league to try and get outcomes they deem beneficial that just constantly fly in the face of what a competitive sport should be. You can not prop up one clubs without hurting others on the flip side.

I am screaming in to an empty void with the AFL but they have to just abolish all priority picks and announce that going forward things need to be different. Unfortunately this is not going to happen with this amateur run bush league of a 'professional sports league'.
