West Coast - where to now?

Im really happy with the last draft.

Given the circumstances i dont think we could have done any better.

I think we went balls out to snare some mids later in the draft - but covered ourselves - in the event noone weve drafted / traded turns out to be the midfield messiah.

I have absolutely zero worries about our guys recruiting talls - we are one of the best clubs in the league at doing so and developing them.

We have either drafted who we need in the midfield - and they come on - or we have planted the seeds for the next spine.

You couldn't?

Dunno.
Brander? Ok best available?, maybe
Oscar Allen is a maybe midfielder?
Liam Ryan? Yeah nah
Ainsworth? Mid, Tick
Petrucelle? Utility? Nah
Hamish Brayshaw? Tick, he's a mid and worth a punt.

The concerning thing is the midfield is balls, and you've picked at 30-odd for the first time then waited until 78 or something for another contested ball winner.

We picked 4 inside mids.
Have a look and Mitch Crowden here and tell me he isn't what you need more than a Petrucelle? I dunno of he'll make it, it's more the type.

We took Tom North at 65. On the weekend in his firs game against Subi he racked up 31 and kicked a goal. Do you have those types?

Fine to have Le Cras on the list but at 32 this season ...does he cut into Waterman, Ryan and Rioli's development?
That doesn't concern me as much as how bad he's been the last 1-2 seasons.

The biggest danger in football is misinterpreting where your list is at....I don't this West Coast have done anything really wrong they just need games into the younger players. Round 1 you want to see Venables, Ryan and Waterman out there at a minimum.
WC's list is generally good enough but the midfield has been awful for a while, making the failure to address the weakness in the midfield even more acute. If they brought in a couple of better midfielders, there wouldn't be any talk of rebuilds. WC would be targeting a top four spot.

Question, when did Freo last finish above the Eagles on the ladder?

Get off the high horse mate, Freo have done SFA and your posting as if they've won three flags in a row.

Seriously?o_O:huh:

Couldn’t address the point?

It was more a point about method. I don’t really see a method in the drafting/trading that reflects list strengths and weaknesses.

I have no idea how far we can go. I can see a method in the way we look at list management.

West Coast's method has always been best available and it's generally worked pretty well for them. Oscar Allen sliding clearly led to a change in strategy on draft day.

As opposed to making sure they fixed the specific, long-term weakness of the midfield?

Have you actually stated which players from say the 2016 and 2017 drafts you would have picked that were available at our picks?

Or are you going to go the soft option and say thats not your job and just continue complaining and chucking a tantrum?

It's low-hanging fruit to point out that SPP would have been handy, although I still have high hopes for Venables. We have to be optimistic about him, otherwise we're completely screwed. But my criticisms aren't simply about second-guessing the past two drafts.

I just think it's strange that JackOutback insists we've done enough to improve the midfield but has now suggested we draft the best available, regardless of position. That doesn't sound like we've been going all out to fix the midfield, does it?

What a laughable fanboy thing to say. Yes, I'm going to keep assessing the list - and how we got here - as I see fit. Is there some rule that we should all just applaud mindlessly? I reckon there's enough of that going around.

I also like how you refer to "the soft option" as though you, by contrast, are doing something so hard-nosed and courageous. How revealing and amusing that this is how you see yourself.

Remember when you insisted the 2012 midfield would match the 2006 group? How did that work out? Big surprise, you've still got no idea.

There's plenty more where that came from if you want to poke your little nose out your burrow, Fridge Magnet. But remember, it ends with you bleating tragically about "tone" after having your arse handed to you repeatedly. In other words, the soft option.

I’ll address Tom north thing and his 31 possessions (practise game). Yes we have lots of types that can amass 31 possessions at wafl level. Unfortunately u don’t see it because they are playing at eagles seniors.

So does this address ur stupid point? Regarding brander, I can see u hoping he doesn’t become a good afl player. He will.

You have also written off players who haven’t played a game since being drafted.

And your team doesn’t look so great without Fyfe. Be hopeful he stays fit because take him out, Lyon has no other ideas.

Heard Fyfe say that dockers are now playing more Lyon like. Enjoy ur boring games and everyone’s ability being suffocated apart from Fyfe.

Remember Ballantyne kicked 4 against us. That’s what tells me we had an off day. And our defence, to quote trump, “its great, it’s beautiful”.

Yep you took the soft option. Instead of putting up an opinion on credible options you avoid saying anything really.

How about you put up or shut up for a change.

As to anyone handing arse to anyone exactly how many times have you changed your user name now is it?

Gunner Longshanks
Ian Dargie
Sweet Jesus

Have I missed any?

It seems to happen after YOU get handed Your arse by a plethora of posters pointing out just how big a tool you are.

Another soft option you take quite often is misquoting people to suit your argument. .... really!

I mean that is the ultimate SOFT option really. You post so much garbage rhat even you get embarrassed and so change your name on at least three occassions. That is the softest option of all.

Might be time for another name change Gunner Dargie.;)

Who are these young midfielders capable of getting 31 possessions, but playing in the Eagles seniors? Sheed? Not really a ball magnet, yet?
Venables? How many games has he played? Not a stupid point at all.

East Perth’s poor performances over the last couple of years shows that the Eagles do not have the depth in the midfield, and hardly anywhere else. If they get badly hit with injuries they will drop like a stone.

This is an Eagles thread, so I shouldn’t be defending my team, but Freo pressure games are so much more interesting than the Eagles playing the web in 2015. The only thing the Eagles crowd seemed to enjoy was the rare cameo by NicNat (a whole crowd pretending to be Meg Ryan as Sally whenever the ball was in his vicinity) and calling out “BALL” or “HIGH” whenever the ball was in contention. The Hawthorn style 10m uncontested kicking and marking has been the single most boring aspect of football this decade.

Compare that to Freo’s game at their height. Massive pressure from the foot soldiers and delightful skills and brutality from the likes of Fyfe, Sandilands and Walters.

Can you ever post in a West Coast thread and not just talk about Fremantle?

Embarrassing.

Morton, Grant, Myers, Palmer, Veszpremi

Half-wits go on about Masten being a dud pick but he was still one of the best mids taken in the first round of that draft which speaks volumes for just how bad that year was.

Rioli was always going to stay in Melbourne and no one was going to take the risk on Dangerfield that high either so it was the best of a bad situation.

Lach was right about the midfield though. Its all good to say take best available, but if you do that and the best available are all forwards with your first three picks, and you desperately need mids, then by the time you pick up a mid you're way down in the 60's and that mid is even less likely to make it. We should have picked up the best available mid because that's what we need. Worpel or Constable or Kelly before forwards imo. Only time will tell whether our strategy pays off. I'm not holding my breath.

WCE are a bunch of bastards !!
pretty soon i have some overseas friends coming to Perth and as part of the "australian experiance" i thought i would take them to a footy match so online i go to ticketmaster to grab tickets to a WCE game ... the exercise for three adults and 2 kids in the alcohol free zone came up to a whopping $283.75 !!! i almost fell off my chair so i looked to the game the next week a freo game choosing exactly the same seats $119.00 .... do the WCE really live in a world wher they think families have a spare $300 for one footy game.... funny enough looking online a Richmond membership (chose them as premiers) to all games home and away for an adult is $315.00

I'm sorry WCE but you are a bunch of money hungry bastards.. your price gouging is putting football out of the reach of not only opposition supporters but even your own supporters .. i hope you have an empty stadium by mid season cause you are bottom four and your fans see what kind of organisation you really are

Ive stated that I wouldnt have taken Ryan when we did.

Replace Ryan with a true inside mid in Constable or a Worpel then our draft looks much more balanced.

Brander and Allen were to good to pass on but adding say Constable / Worpel, Ainsworth, Petrucelle and Brayshaw that would have been my preference.

Supply v demand at a new $1 billion dollar stadium that only fits 60,000 not 100,000.

Obviously Eagles have higher demand than Freo.

It will be interesting tosee if Freo prices go up or West Coast come down in years to come.
