West Coast - where are they going?

The reality with equalisation measures fully in place is that trying to cash in and win a few flags when your list is hot is definitely the way to go.

Richmond did it, it worked. West coast did it, it didn’t work, they build and go again. Nothing to see here other than a side having their time down the bottom end of the ladder.

Sans father/ son or academy, this is pretty much it, the system is designed for teams to have their time at the bottom.

Nic Nat has been injured and sold the farm for Tim Kelly in 2019. Will be a few years in the bottom 4.

Don't think it's understood what a God NicNat is in Perth

Be scary what Eagles signed him up for $$ wise

Been ineffectual for a while and wouldn't surprise if never plays again.
He's a god and a merchandiser's bonanza.

Just makes me.think it's a bit iffy if that's a factor when it comes to contract negotiation.

Not a good cultural practice.

When you start viewing the club as a cash cow rather than a professional sports organisation you can lose your way for a period until your get your priorities straight

They're at Port 2011 levels now but we saw how quickly things turned around with them. I don't think West Coast are going to need tarps at Optus but they could make a preliminary final in 3 years time.

If Port of 2011 were playing WCE, Port would win by 12 goals. WCE are at whole another level of awfulness. Port at least managed to salvage 3 wins for the year. Sure they had a couple of massive losses, but they were against the top teams, not the bottom six teams. Its remarkable that WCE have won a match this season, and that match they only won the single quarter and without that tiny little purple patch in the second stanza against the orange team, would be null points currently.

if anything WCE looks better than it really is, thanks to teams like Collingwood and Geelong putting the queue in the rack once they had a comfortable enough lead.

Port lost by an aggregate of 303 points over 2 consecutive games in 2011, while West Coast have lost by an aggregate of 293 points over their last 2 games.
Then I remember the teams Port lost to were powerful Collingwood and Hawthorn teams, while West Coast lost to middle of the road Sydney and Adelaide sides.

a painful rebuild but history says, they won't stay down for long

personally I think they've made the right decision to keep simmo but they should review whether he is there for the next run or just the first steps of the rebuild
you are correct. West coast vs North Melbourne grand final in 2024. lol

Richmond did what that has worked?

Richmond built a triple premiership list over a decade. And it took the club putting the coach and players on final notice to spark the fire. Good on them delivering 3 flags in 4 years for their fans.

However like others after winning 3 flags they started sliding and they have thrown top picks reloading with Taranto and Hopper attempting to land another before Dustry retires.

The jury is still out if that will be a success. So far Richmond are tracking pretty much the same path as the Eagles after the Kelly trade. Except without the 100 point floggings because they have brought in two A grade mids and have alos had a decent run with injury. And predictions for 2024 is they finish around 15th 16th again.

So has reloading with Taranto and Hopper really gained much?

Derp, they won three flags with a lot of top ups along the way. They don’t need to win another and will be rebuilding shortly now that Dimma is gone.

Derp back at you.

We were discussing how teams try and steal another flag AFTER ALREADY winning them and the list starts to age and drop away.

What's the best strategy hit the draft or trade in established players?

They’ll win between 6-9 games I think. They still have a handy spine and their midfield isn’t as bad as has been made out.

Would love this to happen but 6 to 9 wins would .....well.....be astounding IMO.

Maybe 4 wins and hopefully no 100 point floggings.

If they can keep their spine fit that will help stem the bleeding.

No chance, the list is terrible.
Their older players are always injured, can't see them improving

Shocked to read that.......not. That Eagles 2006 grand final result obviously left some deep scaring in your head.

Eagles couldn't get any worse. The improvement will be better player availability, developing the kids and less or no 100 point floggings.

2024 isn't about wins but competing for longer and not giving up. Getting games in the kids who earn it and the older guys getting fitter to support list development

Bottom 2 finish most likely.

Rebuild will be much harder than clubs like yours who still have AFL House spoon feeding them priority access others don't get.

2006 grand final? Wow

The list is in a poor position because you have failed to develop young players for the last decade.
Oscar Allen is probably the only top player you have developed in 10 years
