Man Utd, Perth Glory.
Particulary by the media in Melbourne and other national broadcasters. Every time there is a mention of recent Grand Finals from the 90's onwards its always:

Collingwood's 1990 premiership
Baby Bombers 93 and Long's performance
Carlton's 95 flag
Roos' 96 breakthrough
Crows 97'98 back to back
Lions Threepeat
Port's first flag
Swans first flag in AFL
and so on.

Im not knocking footy fans in general because they generally recognise the day the cup was taken from Victoria for the first time but the media just seems to want to forget that it ever happened.

Surely Peter Matera's grand final effort was one of the best ever 5 goals from the wing and the goal that got us in front for the first time was just magic. Yet i have yet to see it replayed or talked about in a historical sense on TV, other that by WA media.

Feel the same way Eagles' fans?

I see your point - but not to be pedantic or anything - those flags didn't occur in the 90's:D

There are no easy flags. It's hard enough to win one let alone worry about how much recognition is given to each and every one. All flags are worth equal value to their respective clubs IMO, no one flag is worth more than another.

You had a State team; shouldn't have taken you that long.......................

Look, this isn't a post to say we were awesome hahahaha we won the flag in 1992 its to get a reaction from WA fans to see if they feel the same about the thread in question.

By the way we had the same picks as Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Port and Freo. We just had an eye for talent. If you don't believe me check wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_Pre-season_Draft and click down the bottom to the history of the draft back in 88,89,90 and so forth.

Mate your leaving in a dream world, the fact people even say WCE won a premiership in 92 is more than enough recognition. You had a state team/franchise, you had drafting rights to every single player in Western Australia, if anyone wanted to draft a player from WA WCE got first choice. This meant week in and week out it was a STATE (franchise) vs small footy teams.

No club in the history of the game has been given more advantages over the rest of the comp than WCE Inc. were in their early days. Like I said it was a whole state (franchise) vs Victoria (divided into 11).

The sad thing is your franchise only won 2 premierships, with those kinds of advantages you should have won every single premiership until 1995.

So no WCE do not deserve any recognition for their 1992 and 1994 premierships as they were a state team. Think of it like this, if Victoria entered a team in the WAFL in 1987 how many premierships would it have won?

Couldn't give a toss what Wiki says, you had the pick of the State, you his players for years.

And good on ya, you got the prize...but it just plays it down a bit for mine, not one of the best Premiers of the 90s up till now, thats why it doesnt get hyped up much...OK?

If you don't want non WC supporters to post, keep it to your board champ...

Of course the Melbourne media is going to be more Melbourne centric and talk about the flags that went to Victorian clubs over the ones that went interstate. While it does deserve more recognition, it is the way the media works. Just like how in South Australia it is all about Port and the Crows and in Perth its all about West Coast and Fremantle. Just look at the difference in attention from West Coasts flag in 2006 to Hawthorns in 2008.

It was a good team. Honsetly i think they should have perhaps won more premierships together.

We had a great defence, big bodies, no fear and suma (514 goals in 150 games plus good in finals) so i think they underachieved. Not that premierships are easy.

Yeah mate your trying to gloat, gloat over a state beating a country town, what an achievement! No you did not have the same picks as those other clubs that is a downright lie, you also had zone concessions which was where the bulk of your player group came from. If I recall correctly Sumich and Kemp were both zone concessions, arguably your best 2 players were given to you unfairly in a unprecedented amount of favoritism from the AFL.

Your leaving in a dream world. In 1987 when we formed we got shafted big time. We had only 2 months to get our infastructure together and our playing list. We recrutied well but missed out on key WA talent and only got or 3 from other clubs.

Our list then was quite old with only a few teenagers and of course we should have been allowed to take some good talent, but how where we supposed to know that they would turn out to be stars? huh?

Your team could have had any of McIntosh, Heady, Kemp, Evans but you picked others.

So we finished 2nd above all other teams INCLUDING Hawthorn, and it's our fault the flag went interstate?? pmsl...at least we had a crack that year.

Kemp was a post draft selection in the 1988 draft, so all clubs passed on him.

Suma was a pre-choice pick, he was turning 21 in January of 89' so it was unlikely other clubs would have gone for him in the draft anyway.

I do agree, the first time the cup went interstate probably deserves more of a mention.

I seem to recall that at the AFL Hall of Fame there is a time line of great events / achievments for the VFL / AFL.

The first time the crows won is mentioned, same with Port, everytime Collingwood wins is marked in gold embossed letters but do you think the first time the AFL cup left Victoria is mentioned?

No.....nida.....never happened:D.

Whats even more funny is the highlight of 1992 was some totally obscure event no one has ever heard of.

It says alot IMO.

Don't forget it was given a dream run in the Finals by the AFL.

BS

We didn't even get a home final in 1990 despite finishing 3rd and only got 1 in 1991 despite finishing first which should have given us a second one v Melbourne the next week.

Also the MCC ****ed us out of numerous home finals after them and the AFL said that one final must be played at the G'.

So don't say we had a dream run at any stage.

How did you get shafted? The only reason you were put together so quickly is because WCE was and still is a cashcow for the AFL, thats why you were and to some extent still are owned by Indian Pacific Ltd. A puppet company set up the VFL to own WCE, so WCE were actually owned by Victorians, thats makes you Victorian!

Its not hard to recruit well when you have an entire state to chose from, is it?

And your neglecting the question here, which is was it fair, so please answer this question to prove it, if Victoria entered a team in the WAFL in 1987 how many premierships would it have won?

Exactly my point.
