Obviously if your starting a new team from a certain area, your going primaraly going to pick blokes from that certain area aren't you? How else do you expect a team to get started? Surely if you get given picks to get a team together some of them are bound to be good players. If not its a bit of a worry. Out of our 1987 bunch not many lasted that long.
We weren't a cash cow. We almost went broke in 1989 too, we were losing crowds and sponsors were losing interest. Good coaching got us to the strong position in the years to follow.
I can't help but feel this is all coming because we beat you in all 4 finals from 1991-1994. Just give it up mate.
Not only was the VFL nearly broke in 1986 but the WAFL was the same thanks to the loan for the new Subiaco Oval stand. Both leagues needed the cash injection as much as the other.
lol@ cash cow.
The cats are still a bit dirty about the results from so long ago by the sounds

Doesn't get mentioned much either does it?
Hurts doesn't it
Look what a misplaced apostrophe can do to a person.......None of these were in the '90s.
Not to mention it's '90s, not 90's.
WA media sucks balls, and you're a ****ing idiot.
sympathy bite.It was probably a drug-tainted premiership anyway.
sympathy bite.

The reason why the Vic media hate talking about the 92 prem to WCE is because they were all hoping the Geelong dream would come true. After an epic 89 GF loss, the Cats were the darlings of Victoria with all these great players who deserved a premiership. Then the xenophobes had their dream crushed when the might of West Coast and Matera tore up the MCG and took the cup interstate for the first time.
On the arguement that the Eagles 92 and 94 teams were a state side: its funny how when State of Origin gets brought up or the State Under 18's games get brought up, Victorians will always tell you that WA state sides are pathetic compared to Victoria, and that the VFL shits on the WAFL. Yet back in 92 and 94 WA were the powerhouse state side and the Eagles were gifted a premiership.
Which is it you morons - cant have it both ways![]()

Yes, WCE winning the first non-Victorian flag should be acknowledged as a significant event in the evolution of the VFL-AFL competition.
But, as I think you can surmise from many of the posts in reply to your original question, it is not recognised as one of the great grand finals (it isn't) or much cherished outside Perth because WCE 1987-1995 were all but a State of Origin team and to this end I think Victorians old enough to remember the period are entitled to discount its significance. ... Actually, you should be grateful it is not more heavily derided as an ugly anomaly of the national expansion of our great game 'cause that's what a state team winning a club based competition is (ugly).
Side bar: what amazed me at the time was that once WC overcame the massive hurdle of traveling 3.5 hrs+ interstate every second week (and this was huge and something pretty new to Australia sport), say 1990-91, they didn't win more than two flags. They had the cattle and the coach between 1990-1996 to win 3-4.
but if WA state of origin footy is crap then it shouldnt matter and we would be on an even playing field.Well they weren't playing a Victorian state side were they? It was a state side vs club sides.
Problem with comprehension? You're not quite all there are you mate?
I for once agree with a freo supporter that THe Eagles side of 1992 was the best of the best of what the west have to offer! They should have won more premierships!Well they weren't playing a Victorian state side were they? It was a state side vs club sides.

Maybe for those that don't support one of the AFL teams that were born out of this. But if you support Freo or WC, I would think you would prefer to have them in the big league than be supporting some team in the WAFL as a third rate league (behind the VFL and SANFL).This is how sad some supporters are, I don't care that you beat Geelong, I can't even remember it. The reason I'm annoyed is because WCE are a Victorian franchise which destroyed real Western Australian football and history in the WAFL. We have gained nothing and lost everything.
Actually, many of the best WA players played in the VFL. So, it was not like you got our state side and it became WC. I am sure if you look at the state of origin teams at the time, you will see they were hardly overflowing with WC players.WCE supporters always have this attitude like everyone is against them, WE DON'T CARE, we don't care about what happens to your franchise, WCE are just a franchise, an intermediary between another franchise. NO ONE CARES
Now as to your second argument, clearly someone doesn't understand basic deduction. Victoria is a better football state than WA, but in 1987 Victoria's talent was divided into 11 teams. While WA's talent was divided into 1 franchise. So obviously that would make it unfair against the Victorians as it is a whole state against 1/11th's of Victoria.
(Please remember Victorian clubs did not receive zone concessions anyway, only WCE did and it was the whole state, so your argument isn't really relevant nor understandable)

Oh, I totally agree with you. Where we disagree is how many benefits WCE were actually given. You had zone concessions, pre-draft concessions and ordinary draft picks as well. What the new gold coast team is going to get is so small compared to what you got. You should not have been given so much, even Cometti says you were handed those premierships.
You were a cash cow and still are, if you were not going to make money for the VFL then why would they bother spending their own money to set you up?Ignorance is bliss. The 1989 crisis just reflects the supporter mentality of WCE which is if your not winning don't bother. This is reflected by the drop in members in 89, 2001 and most recently 2008. It is proven WCE supporters do not stick around.
The WAFL got no cash injection of WCE, in fact WCE destroyed the WAFL. The VFL set up WCE with the sole purpose of taking over the footy market in WA and destroying the WAFL, after all the two leagues were competitors. Both leagues did need the cash injections, but only one league got it and thats the VFL. The WCE didn't fund the WAFL till very recently, well after it had been destroyed.

You must find it hard to look in the mirror. Not at all, the problem I have is with idiots....
