The umpire idea actually not bad. Umpires shouldnt be doing half marathons each match
It was quite possibly, the most ludicrous idea in the history of the game.
All he does is put up stupid suggestions for clickbait from Nuffies Central !!

"North Melbourne becomes the umpiring department, and is based in Cairns."Thought of this thread immediately when I saw this tonight. It feels like he cycles through the some 'plans' each year, far from the first time he's wheeled out the umpiring one. Soon he'll be back to the building a roof on the MCG idea.
Did a great job in a number of ways, the biggest issue was he stayed too long. That is often inevitable with big personalities and egos and it sets the organisation back as they can’t be reigned in. Same with Sheedy at Essendon.
Everybody has a use-by date and few are self-aware enough to know when it is and that they should go out when things are going well due to all the work they’ve done. Somebody like a Jurgen Klopp is a rare example of getting that right.

And people thought wildcard round with 9 and 10 playing finals was shit. This gives everyone a go right down to 16th.
- after 21 rounds, ladder resets for qualifying rounds. bottom 2 sides out of finals race, plays each other (for no 1 draft pick?)
- remaining 16 teams split by odds and evens into 2 divisions of 8
- next 2 weeks, teams qualify for final 8
- top 4 teams double chance, top 2 teams in week 1 getting bye in week 2 (and progressing straight to finals)

trying to summarise the best I can
bold new fixture proposal (over 2 years, apparently):
----------------
- home and away season: each team plays each other once (17 rounds)
- 4 “Exotic Rounds”
- 1st Exotic Round is all 10 Vic teams playing each other, Qld teams vs NSW teams, SA teams vs WA teams
- 2x Exotic Rounds = Rivalry Rounds
- final Exotic Round = Gather Round
- after 21 rounds, ladder resets for qualifying rounds. bottom 2 sides out of finals race, plays each other (for no 1 draft pick?)
- remaining 16 teams split by odds and evens into 2 divisions of 8
- next 2 weeks, teams qualify for final 8
- top 4 teams double chance, top 2 teams in week 1 getting bye in week 2 (and progressing straight to finals)
- best 4 teams in each division qualify for same finals format as now
I'm exhausted...
the article said "to pay the bills the AFL’s target is 216 games per year" (although Eddie's suggestion falls 2 games short)And people thought wildcard round with 9 and 10 playing finals was shit. This gives everyone a go right down to 16th.
Why ****ing bother with the first 21 rounds if your gonna give 16 out 18 teams a shot after all of that.
No it still wouldn't make any sense to do it.A top 16 would make more sense if we had 22-24 teams, but it’d be much better to just do double of what the top 8 system is now.
With that many teams I think it would. A lot of teams and fans would check out early if you just had a top 8.No it still wouldn't make any sense to do it.
What's wrong with this exactly? It's better than the current Opening Round mess. All Victorian teams get to play in Victoria for one round, while the Interstate teams get to play another interstate club.
I don’t get it
There will be several Victorian teams that don’t have intrastate rivalries to speak of (eg dogs, saints), and too many teams would want to play your lot or the cats. What's wrong with this exactly? It's better than the current Opening Round mess.
