Analysis What is it with Eddie and plans?

Thought of this thread immediately when I saw this tonight. It feels like he cycles through the some 'plans' each year, far from the first time he's wheeled out the umpiring one. Soon he'll be back to the building a roof on the MCG idea.
"North Melbourne becomes the umpiring department, and is based in Cairns."

Did a great job in a number of ways, the biggest issue was he stayed too long. That is often inevitable with big personalities and egos and it sets the organisation back as they can’t be reigned in. Same with Sheedy at Essendon.

Everybody has a use-by date and few are self-aware enough to know when it is and that they should go out when things are going well due to all the work they’ve done. Somebody like a Jurgen Klopp is a rare example of getting that right.

Perfect timing considering Richard Goyder wants another 3 years as chairman of the AFL to take himself to an incredible 12 years as chair and 17 years on the commission.

At least Eddie was proactive and achieved a lot in his tenure, Goyder has been bloody pathetic in his role, I don't think he's ever done an interview for the AFL and with a socially awkward Dillon in charge, it's been a recipe for disaster.

trying to summarise the best I can

bold new fixture proposal (over 2 years, apparently):
  • home and away season: each team plays each other once (17 rounds)
  • 4 “Exotic Rounds”
  • 1st Exotic Round is all 10 Vic teams playing each other, Qld teams vs NSW teams, SA teams vs WA teams
  • 2x Exotic Rounds = Rivalry Rounds
  • final Exotic Round = Gather Round
  • after 21 rounds, ladder resets for qualifying rounds. bottom 2 sides out of finals race, plays each other (for no 1 draft pick?)
  • remaining 16 teams split by odds and evens into 2 divisions of 8
  • next 2 weeks, teams qualify for final 8
  • top 4 teams double chance, top 2 teams in week 1 getting bye in week 2 (and progressing straight to finals)
  • best 4 teams in each division qualify for same finals format as now
----------------
I'm exhausted...

And people thought wildcard round with 9 and 10 playing finals was shit. This gives everyone a go right down to 16th.

Why ****ing bother with the first 21 rounds if your gonna give 16 out 18 teams a shot after all of that.

A top 16 would make more sense if we had 22-24 teams, but it’d be much better to just do double of what the top 8 system is now.

Week 1:

1v8,2v7,3v6,4v5 Qualifying

9v16,10v15,11v14,12v13, Elimination

Week 2:

QF losers v EF winners

Week 3:

QF winners v week 2 winners

Week 4:

Week 3 winners play each other

Bye

Week 5:

GF

the article said "to pay the bills the AFL’s target is 216 games per year" (although Eddie's suggestion falls 2 games short)

On his heavily sponsored podcast from his sponsor’s box at the stadium he’s on the trust of, which occasionally features Jimmy Bartel, he outlines one hare brained plan to change the afl every five minutes - with little regard to consistency and based on an opinion he’s only just come up with. It’s amusing watching him contradict himself if you’re in the right mood.

Lol, who wants to see current Richmond, St Kilda or Essendon in a final 16.

As the fixtures have fallen this season, the 9/10 wildcard could generate some interest in the final rounds..

What's wrong with this exactly? It's better than the current Opening Round mess.
There will be several Victorian teams that don’t have intrastate rivalries to speak of (eg dogs, saints), and too many teams would want to play your lot or the cats.

I still preferred my convoluted F1 style elimination series after the 17/18 round series is over.

Working title, Challenge Rounds.

End of regular season, bottom 2 or 3 teams are instantly eliminated. If a 20th side comes in, then another challenge round can be added.

Match ups are decided by ladder position after the end of each challenge round.

Highest ranked team in each block has home ground advantage.

Play down until the final 8 is determined then revert to current finals format.
