When Will Freo Win Their First Flag?

freo appear to be building a pretty good list, and it should peak from 2014-2017.

unfortunately, by this time:
- your two best players will have retired (sandilands and pavlich).
- melbourne's list will also be maturing, and while draft picks don't guarantee a flag melbourne appears to have the basis of a better list. i also like the way essendon is going about rebuilding (give or take a few noses out of joint) and they'll be peaking around the same time as you
- and by the latter half of your potential premiership window the gold coast's first batch of early picks will be maturing.

so it's hard to say. to win a flag you need everything to go right, and so far fremantle has proven to be an organisation where not much goes right.

I'm hopeful of Freo winning one before Gold Coast or Western Sydney do. We are about 2-3 years ahead of GC development wise, Gold Coast have only recruited kids so far. Pretty hard to say they will win a flag in x number of years before they've even got a squad together.

We'll all be in our cold cold grave before freo get close to a premiershp

The corner has been turned about 2 years ago. In the last 2 drafts we have taken 23 new players, only 1 (McPhee) of those 23 is a recycled player from another club, and he was recruited to fill a clear need. Even then he was picked up in the PSD for free and not traded for. I think the new list manager is doing quite well.

2045 - Against the South African Rhinos in a Saturday Twilight Grand Final before 98,000 fans at the Gold Coast Stadium, having lost to the Gold Coast Seagulls in the last round and the New Zealand Rams in the Qualifying Final, but having then rebounded to defeat the Canberra Kangaroos in the Semi Final and the North Queensland Crocodiles in the Preliminary.

what do you call recruiting macphee than

Firstly - he is the exception rather than the rule. Of the 23 new players we have recruited the last 2 drafts - he is the only one that has previous AFL experience.

Secondly - we didn't trade for him, he came for free in the PSD.

Third - he will fill a specific role in the midfield which will free up Pavlich to play forward where he does his best work. Having Pavlich play away from the forward line this year seriously upset the team balance.

In 2012 the world will the go into an orbital unbalance and Fremantle will win the premiership. Millions of lives will be lost and we will have to re-populate the earth once again.

I love the look of the Freo developing players, (Could have done with a current Brisbane player though... epic fail there) but as everyone else is pointing out, they have to grow up incredibly quickly if they want to snag a flag while their great key players are still around.

Palmer might even win a Brownlow but maybe by this stage when the likes of Palmer, Hill, Ibbotson are really good players Sandilands and Pavlich (the most important pieces to any Freo success) will be gone.

I'm sure we could let Melbourne into our little comp and still win it.

After all you're the only team that's managed to lose a final to us.
Ha ha very funny that is one of the better comebacks I have read. Put back in your place by the finals record of Freo!!!

Actually don't know why 2085 is unrealistic. Not saying they won't be near good enough between then and now, but only one team wins a flag each year. Even if it was spread evenly across the comp, that's only one flag for every team every 18 years starting from 2012. All you have to do is miss your turn to even make the GF once or twice, and you've got another Sydney (pre-whatever year it was), St Kilda or Doggies or Geelong (pre 2007), waiting for decades before a flag arrives.

I'm hoping that's not going to be Essendon's story.

Great point, in fact every 12 years is more accurate. Fremantle had there chance in 2006, 11 years since 1995 when they started playing, WCE won there flag in 2006 12 years after their last one in 1994. Swan similar 9 years since there last GF in 1996 (they missed their chance in 96)

It's really hard to tell until you see their younger players in action. Obviously from what we've seen of Hill, Suban, Palmer and others it's all very well on track but there are 3 issues in my mind.

1. Other teams maturing at the same time - As people have said. Personally I don't think this is such a big thing because there are always going to be good teams but who am I to argue.

2. The board/coach - I don't rate Harvey and I'm glad they gave him a new contract. I hope he screws them into another one. I hate to be harsh but I don't see him as a premiership coach. I've never seen a premiership coach who comes across as a little slow.

3. Not enough you KPP - At this point it's an issue but it only takes one draft to fix or maybe a little gem.

Overall, I think they wont win a flag until blokes like Hill and Palmer are old timers, say 28/29, and backed up by a bunch of young kids...Although I think they'll go close when Hill and Palmer are 24/25 and then fall away again. :thumbsu:

Fremantles drafting in 2007-2009 has been excellent. 08 brilliant by them, better than most. They are nearly rebuilding from the ground up, i figure if they can draft another 2 players over the next 2 years then continue to draft stronly after that then they are looking at 2015-2020 as a realistic window at this stage. Always depends on how there kids come along.
