While I really like Bird, I think round one is a bit early for him.
It sounds that Bolton is ready to go back to trenches (which is where he
belong - and he needs to perform because we just gave him a pay rise).
With Kirk, Bolton and probably Buchanan and Ablett (and even Goodes) acting as rovers, there isn't much room to fit Bird in.

And nevertheless, I'll try Schmidt and Moore ahead of him (maybe even Jack - I think he's wasted as a small defender). I think Bird will on get on
the picture if there's a long-term injury to Kirk or Jude. I think late in the
season or early 2009 is a more realistic time table for him.

Hang on Bolton was in the trenches last year and failed to fire a shot. The opposition had his measure and he failed to raise his head above the trenches
and perform for team and country.

Nah, he started and stayed on the forward the majority of the year and his disposal skills (or lack of) was badly exposed. He was actually good/decent in the few times he started and stayed around the stoppages. The only time that the strategy worked was when Melbourne felt that he needed to be tagged with McLean - so even though he was mainly invisible, he dragged away their best clearance player.

But by the second half (or quarter, can't remember), they realised there was no need to tag Bolton and they put McLean on Kirk. And Kirk coped a heavy tackle near the cricket pitch area (from McLean) and Kirk struggled to shake off that hit for the rest of the afternoon.

sorry, off track a bit, but is it true the SA and WA clubs, particularly the eagles, have gained great benefit from the rookie system by hiding some of their young prospects in their respective state leagues then getting them as rookie selections? i'm not sure how they do it, but i've been led to believe this has been the case

Just off the top of my head - the likes of Cox, Lynch, Priddis, Brett Jones and Nicoski all came through the rookie list. To be fair though, Cox was very average in his earlier years, as was Lynch (and is still inconsistent). And before the internet and DVD age, it was very costly to send scouts/people over to Perth from the east coast to watch prospects that are not rated. But I've heard rumours as well about certain clubs telling some prospects not to turn up to National draft Camps or even State Screening camps etc, but know no real solid proof though.

I think we were hoping the likes of Malcolm Lynch and Addison would fall to laps on the rookie list as well.

yeah, that's what i was talking about, being told not to go to draft camp, etc

as for q lynch, one of the most over-rated forwards not wearing an essendon jumper in the league

Is he actually rated by anyone outside West Coast? :D
But as much as I hate him, he's dangerous when he's on song, especially
when he's matched up against Leo.
