Given the disappointing results of James Hird and Nathan Buckley this year, relative to expectations that is, I wondered today how long they could go without improving. Hird has had an extra year thus far, but if both continued to disappoint, who do you think would be sacked first?

Serious replies only please.

I can't understand why you think Buckley had a disappointing year, with the injuries Collingwood had, the Cloke saga, J Mac, and all the other crap he had to put up with in his first year, making the prelim was a bloody good effort and I really couldn't see Malthouse doing much better. You have to remember the Pies were not looking that flash at the end of last year either. How about we leave the judgments to the end of next year at least.

Surprised to see there's still a general vibe among supporters that Voss should go. That has well and truly subsided on the Lions board, which is obviously from people most emotionally invested in the success of the club. Some were calling for his head early in the season, but he's done a brilliant job this year and has, while everyone was calling him names and saying Brisbane are in for a decade of hurt, built a very promising young side.

Now, it's still to be seen whether we'll be able to take the next step or not, but surely off this year suggesting he'll be the first of those three to be sacked doesn't make much sense at all. I'd also heavily the 'chasing a flag' line, but that argument has been done to death.

FWIW, I think the next coach to go will be Sheedy at the end of next season. Following that, I think McKenna might be in the firing line - however unfair that may be considering what he has to work with.

I don't think either will be sacked anytime soon. Both had to deal with some injury issues this year and I think certainly the Bombers will be serious contenders next 3 years.

I do find it surprising though how supportive Pies supporters are of the whole Buckley appointment. Yes 4th is a generally a good result and Pies had some injuries to deal with but to me it seems there are many players in the Collingwood team who at the moment do not look a shadow of the players they were in 2010 and 2011.

I don't know what has gone on there, maybe they all hit a form slump at the same time but I think unless Buckley can rediscover the secret to their form in 2010/11 then frustrations may start to build.

Hird would be under serious pressure if Essendon don't win at least one final next year, wont be able to justify Knights sacking.

Especially with Knights ripping it up in the VFL. Who was that genius at Essendon that regularly outcoached the great Ross Lyon?

I understand people don't like Buckley but to say he had a disappointing season is just dumb. To finish in the top four is a great effort for any side. A lot of things went wrong for collingwood this year and for a first year coach he held it together is a pretty good job. There will be a lot of coaches including Hird who will lose their job before Bucks.

Hird.

Lyon just seems to have a problem with Essendon in general. Maybe we should have hired him and seen what happened. Perhaps David Rodan-style own goals aplenty!

A-well-a, everybody's heard about the bird. Bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word. A-well-a,bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word. A-well-a, bird, bird, bird, well, the bird......

Hird will walk away at end of next season if it all doesn't magically fall his way.

Buckley had the harder gig from the start imo, he took over a team at their absolute peak and nothing short of a GF berth would have been considered a failure. Of course in reality it's a lot harder than that and he did very well to get them to a prelim. They've been up for awhile now and historically they're probably on the downhill slope, and if it does go that way then it will be interesting to see what Eddie does, having to sack him would be a massive dent to his ego because it would be an admission of an error.
Personally, I reckon Buckley is going to be a very good coach, he's handled himself very well this year.

Hird's appointment was completely different. An improving team that had to be rebuilt after Sheedy decimated the squad, Hird came in as the saviour guaranteeing success. On face value he doesn't seem to have changed anything, the side is heavily reliant on one player and they're mentally fragile with a terrible fitness team. At times he's looked completely out of his depth this season, will he survive again if they don't make the finals? I think so, but would need to turn it around very quickly after that.

In before anyone else makes a comment, Melbourne are shiite

you mean he won't even see out his contract?

Yeah, I guess Hird is just renowned for having no heart...

I have said it before, he will walk to focus on his many other opportunities.

I don't reckon his heart is in coaching, no. I think it is something he fancied a shot at and Essendon moved heaven and Earth to get him to do.

you think he's just used the club he loves, that 3 generations of Hird has played at, as his personal play-thing?

No, I reckon he seriously fancied a go at coaching the club. But he hasn't put in the hard yards of coaching development, he doesn't appreciate what it entails and when he does, come the annual Junepocalypse next year, I reckon he'll walk. Would be for the good of the club too.

Why? Does Chris Scott have another twin brother essendon can snare?

The classic argument.

Hird had no experience!

Why did Hird need Thompson for support if he's such a great coach?

A paradox, a paradox, a most ingenious paradox.
