Just a quick question.
Why do teams bring players in on Thursday afternoon when teams are named as opposed to bringing them in as late inclusions and leaving the opposition less prepared?

They will get fined a fair bit if they do as in about $20,000 I think. Only players listed in the 25 can play, so they can still play games by listing players they know are going to play as emergencies.

Because the betting agencies want some certainty for their punters - they don't want to be done by a sting such as Freo pulling half the side out of the Tassie match against Hawthorn.

And because the AFL is only too happy to take the bookies money (in sponsorship), they insist on it.

Rule No 1 in AFL - whenever you have a question about the operation of the comp, ask youself "Where's the money in this?".

It doesn't cost a club a fine if they bought in players who were originally named as emergencies though, does it? For example, if Collingwood named an unchanged side for this week, but with Presti and Davis named as emergencies, and then at the last minute did the Presti and Davis for Brown and Goldsack swap.

Nah...only if you go outside of the 25 originally picked.

We at Essendon did that for '95 Anzac Day to play Cockatoo-Collins.

Mark Harvey does it almost every single week.

Even in the Tasmania game against the Hawks. 10 players were dropped on the Thursday but there was still a late change - Hasleby out - on the Saturday. The 4 blokes named on the interchange would be stressing right up until the siren sounds to start the game I reckon.
