Why no green in AFL guernsey's?

I don't know if it still applies but Plymouth Argyle were the only club in the English top 4 leagues to wear green.
It is fairly rare in home kits in England, I can only find three besides Plymouth.

Norwich City have been wearing Green and Yellow kits since the 1900's. They are currently playing in the championship.
Yeovil Town have since the 1890's. They are currently playing in League Two.
Forest Green Rovers but only since 2012. They are currently in League two.

There are some clubs that have worn Green in the past, such as Coventry, Chesterfield, Lincoln City, Scarborough and QPR but they have all reverted back to either Blue or Red. Manchester United wore Green in the 1890's as well, which was a bit of surprise to me.

It's more popular in away uniforms, 7 or 8 Premier League clubs have Green in their away kits this season.

My club, Carlisle United wear Green, but not every season and generally as their away uniform. Last time was 2013/14 when they were in League One.

Canberra United (the women's soccer team) wear a Dark Green and Light Green Jersey which looks pretty good, and there have been a couple of teams who wear Blue and Green jerseys which I also liked.

On a serious note I've always wondered why virtually none of the historically 'big' and professional clubs never opted for green.
Like in the old vfl no sides wore green, same as the wafl and in the sanfl only woodville had green.
The clubs with traditionally Catholic or Irish roots didn't even opt for it. I think GWS really missed a trick by going with green and black (opposites of red & white).
Personally if done right green looks fantastic (particularly emarald green and dark forest green).
I guess it's just one of those quirks/coincidences of football history.

I could only imagine that it was harder/more expensive to get green dye back in the day.

My memory is there was a tacit agreement for clubs not to use green or orange due to the sectarianism that used plague Australia at the time. Crazy to think that this was an issue but clubs were torn apart by Catholic/Protestant splits.
