When did I say he never played a bad game?
I was replying to a poster saying he has never played in the midfield well which was wrong.

What you did say in post 283 was

Now go on, tell me when Heppell has played badly in the midfield and done bad, or were you just making stupid statements like a stupid person.

Do you think Heppell did well on Murphy the day I mentioned?

Okay, he had one bad game, but I was trying to make the point that he rarely plays badly in the midfield like the other poster was playing.

Anyway to answer the OP..

ITS FREAKING ROUND 7!!!!!!!

There's nothing to be won by peaking early. The Cats, Pies, Hawks, Eagles and Sydney are all really good about building up towards the end of the year...
You know, when it actually counts.

So the worst game you've got is one in which Essendon was belted and Heppel had 16 touches 6 marks 2 clearances 2 goal assists.

According to who? Henderson looked average against Hurley early against us, and then couldn't stop Crameri. Fletch has been as good defending and a much better attacking. Henderson has promise, but AA form, spare me

Most people don't seem to realise that while Fletch is off attacking the ball and helping out team mates he's also blanketing someone else. Often this player is someone as crap as Fisher from Carlton, however, it is still no mean feat but Fletch to be able to do this.

I recommend sitting behind the goals one day and watching him closely. It is a pleasure to watch him work. Insanely good at reading the play. It is funny watching a forward's head drop when Fletch walks over to them.

Fletcher is 37 years old and still 10 times the player Henderson is.
Please. Fletcher is playing third tall besides Hooker and Pears as a general like Laidler does for Carlton. Jamison and Henderson attack and take the number one and two key forwards. Robinson doesn't get sent out there to play a defensive role on Darren Glass or Harry Taylor. Goldsack played a similar role on Anzac Day.

Funnier than your belief that Hooker isn't worth Caddy.
With the exception of Watson, I can't think of a single Essendon player who would get a game in Carlton's midfield. In fact even Watson is not really required since Judd and Murphy both do a better job than him on the inside and are far superior on the spread.
We'd take Watson to do what Mclean's body and lack of speed has failed to deliver. Lonergan and Howlett are just good ordinary players who play a role like Ellard and Armfield. Curnow is a better runner with his endurance allowing him to spread and run hard both ways. Hocking needs to get more of the ball to displace a defensive midfielder such as Carrazzo. Didn't live up to his pre-game promise of copying the tactics Carrots used against Pendlebury.

Hocking has been in horrible form all season proper. He looked like he'd taken another step over the preseason games. I'm prepared to allow him some leway and that it could be the concussion he got (from the ball!!) in round 1. However, he'd want to turn his form around quick smart. Getting only 8 possessions in one game is disgusting.

It is a bad game when you play on Murphy in the second half (game was close to half time) and tears the game apart. Heppell got lost at the clearances numerous times. Hey it is not the first time Murphy has given an opponent a bath. Did you watch the game or just look up the stats.

Once again I am not saying Heppell is a dud, just pointing out that it was incorrect that he hadn't played a poor game in the midfield. Bit touchy on this one .

No way Hooker is worth Caddy

Better to watch how Fletcher is beaten for strength by power forwards if he can't play off them and use his speed to spoil. That's always been a weakness that was consistently exploited by Kernahan, Anthony Rocca, Sav Rocca and Jonathan Brown. Power forwards killed him more than they hurt SOS.

Would just like to say that Essendon should be getting a little more respect than they've been shown in this thread. You can't argue they haven't stepped up their game. Whether that's gonna be enough, who knows seven rounds into a season, but I seem to recall another year which when the Dons lacked name players, hadn't played finals the previous year and still snagged a flag. I don't subscribe to the only one way to flag mantra, in which teams must steadily progress deeper into finals each season. If the Dons keep playing the way the have been and keep a healthy list, they're every chance ... God forbid!

Yeah I watched the game. I seriously doubt the essendon coaching panel expected Heppell to nullify Murphy effect on the game because he never stood a chance. I mean first year players don't even do a full preseason and it was late in the year.

Dons would be very happy with how their going, but they would really need every card falling their way to snag one this year.

I would say a very outside chance, and I think most people would agree.

I still think somewhere in the bottom half of the 8, they still have deficiencies which will mean they will have a lull or two at some stage, though probably not as dramatic as last year.
