After today's report about the Pfeiffer incident, I wonder if I have a solution for this kind of problem

The 2 SA clubs, or any AFL club I guess, nominate a few venues, say 3 or 4 each, where they have paid "minders" watching out for their players, to try and prevent incidents from occurring

Their players can go out clubbing, but still know they are protected, in a safe environment, free from the night club warriors wanting to test their muscles against a footy player.

This may sound extreme, but do recent events not demand some action?

your assuming that the players arent the ones causing the problems in the first place

something about being "unprovoked king hit from behind" doesnt sit right with me
if your at a pub or club and someones clocked you.... theres usually a reason why it happened and going on posts ive read on here, Pfeiffer is a bit of a smartarse

of course it MAY have been unprovoked as it does happen... rarely

To make this workable, who else gets allowed in to these clubs, other than the footballers and their minders? And would the clubs only allow the players to go to these 3 or 4 venues? Would they bar them from going to 21sts, weddings, bucks nights with mates from outside the football community?

I feel sorry for young Pfeiffer, and hope he recovers quickly. I was king hit after a game at Waverley once (I guess I provoked it by standing by myself waiting for my wife to emerge from the ladies), but that doesn't mean that fans should be segregated. Neither should players from the rest of society.

The crux of the thread. Are players bigger than society? Yes and No. We all know how we act if we see Roo, or Goody in public, we put them on the pedestal of being everything we want to be. We're aren't in Europe or America where society is so different from the league (just look at the NFL/ NBA with black players going from rags to riches, money and fame lead to illegalities, drugs, violence and what not, ala our friend from the West). We are still a small country, sportspersons and society can still integrate with hardly any issues. Incidents like this happen every weekend, just because it is one of our beloved own doesn't mean, OH NOES DON'T LETS THEM OUT OF COTTON WOOLS, it just means, be a little smarter about where you go and who you talk to. It would seem this incident was unpreventable (by what we are fed by the media outlets) but caution seems to be the way forward, minders simply aren't needed.

Unfortunately this sort of thing happens more regularly these days than you think. Its not reported unless its a person with a public profile, but it happens, believe me. Many (in fact I'd say most) of todays youth have no respect for other people, other peoples property or for society in general. Cowardly acts of violence are becoming more and more common and Glenelg is second only to the city for instances.

i have plenty of friends who have been belted up at night clubs for no reason, its especially bad when there is a group that beat up on 1 guy.

This is happening more and more these days and the "group" arent satisfied until the individual is beaten to a pulp and lying in a hospital in a coma. Gone are the days of one on one with there being a winner and a loser and both parties being able to walk away.

No, it's not foolproof, I doubt that any scheme could ever be 100% effective.

No, the clubs couldn't, and shouldn't, bar the players from going wherever.

No, the venues wouldn't be for AFL players exclusively.

The suggestion is for the clubs to nominate a couple of venues where they could have the "minders" placed. If each club has 4 minders, and the clubs co-operate, that is the minders will look out for any AFL player, then it gives the players 8 choices of venues to attend. However if they wish to go elsewhere, that's their choice.

It's a suggestion to be considered that may help reduce the Pfeiffer type incident

Slightly wayward, but my friday night local (as it is for anyone of Saint Michaels heritage) IS the Ramsgate/Sandbar double at Henley Square.

Port Players seem to have been there EVERY week This summer, and there has never been any trouble, mainly cos a fe wof them are local boys and just genuinely nice blokes.

Perhaps the problem is footballers going to places they wouldn't normally go, and automatically assuming they own the place. Whether this is guys coming over from Interstate, or blokes like Pfeiff, I think this could potentially be the problem.

(not suggesting The weekend incident was his fault btw)

apparantly the "provocation" was that he was chatting to a girl, and some guy didn't take too kindly to it... so as Darren was leaving, this guy did the manly thing and king hit him from behind... cos that solves all problems!
