Traded Picks 2, 20, 72 for Dom Tyson, Picks 9 and 53

You'd be 100% correct. ;) Our 2 top end picks have more question marks over them than our later ones from last years draft IMO. (Hrovat, Hunter)

I'm not really sold on Macrae becoming a star just yet. His game seems to have translated into AFL level pretty well though. Has been producing what he was known for at junior level. Side steps, slippery customer with good skills. He's also got a decent inside game for an 'outside' player and actually averages more contested ball than Tyson.

Tysons game just doesn't seem to have made the transition from junior level to senior very well. He lacks explosiveness + pace and has been found lacking with his contested work which is why he was so highly rated pre draft IIRC.

*Spud was probably a bit harsh. He'll be a best 22 soldier type IMO. But not worthy of a high end pick.
He hasn't produced what he was drafted to do yet but he also wasn't drafted to do it in the first 2 years. Same goes for your boy Stringer who's meant to be a clearance machine but looked out of breath running from the bench to the centre square. Can certainly play forward though.

I would say a decent case of shin splints in year 1 followed by a PCL in year 2 would effect his game. And there are more to winning a clearance than explosiveness and pace.

I agree he could turn out vanilla but I also see that at his best he has the rolls royce edge to him where he makes things look slow and easy but is actually being efficient. It's a fine line between the two some times.

Meh, inside players who aren't built like Wines always start slow.

Hasn't shown a heap through injury troubles, but has played a couple of quality games (in his first year).

Another terrible trade by Melbourne. The kid clearly wanted out from GWS, they should have got more from the deal. Would be fairly shattered if I was a Melb fan

Clearly he wanted out. That's why he re-signed earlier in the year. :thumbsu:

Reliable source says he wanted out badly, Melbourne could have gotten a lot more out of the deal

Oh... so what were we going to do - wait until he was out of contract in two years time?

Can your reliable source answer why he was willingly going to spend an extra two years at GWS?

Stringer is no clearance machine, wtf, where does this dribble come from?
Don't get me wrong, he is a very strong lad, crashed and bashed as a junior, but far from a clearance specialist, I think he'll be an exceptional player, but he is no clearance machine.
Matt Crouch is what I'd call a clearance machine.
Tyson had injuries in his last jr year, from memory - shoulder, pretty bad.
Injuries this year obviously.

Master Bate, I wouldn't listen to anyone who says Dom Tyson has not transitioned, it's a naive opinion, no kid can be expected to transition into an AFL system if he is injured and cannot do a pre-season.
Same goes for Jim Toumpas, kid will be a fine player, but expectations from Demons supporters were too high - for a kid who had hip surgery and basically no pre-season.

I saw the image on the front page of age.com of Dom Tyson, couldn't watch the video because I've already viewed my 30 articles.

But ... he really has that quintessential poncey Melbourne look made famous by Cameron Bruce and Brad Green.

Could definitely see him trotting around on a wing or half forward flank doing one 'nice' thing a game.

Bruce and Green had terrific careers. You might be thinking of Sylvia?

GWS have picks 1 and 2 again? Crazy

dom tyson is a very very good player. he would imo go top 2 this draft if he was in it. id also say if he did not cop a poor run with injuries he would be the best performed mid they have. this kid just screams out quality.

in a way gws have gone backwards. they have actually put two yrs development into tyson and now if they use the pick start from scratch again. that is if they manage to draft a player of tysons class the odd top 2 or 5 pick has failed over the yrs.

im sad to see him go to melbourne i was hoping we would get him last yr and when that failed had hoped we would be looking again. of course we cant compete with pick 2 and 20.

Apologies if this has already been covered somewhere in this thread, but why did GWS have pick 9 to send to Melbourne? Shouldn't they have only had pick 1 in the first round?

Ablett compo pick. Traded to GC in 2010 then onto GWS in 2011 as part of the O'Meara trade.

I think this trade is too hard to call for who will be better in the long run reckon they will both get very good players out of it. Melbourne should definitely improve with the ready made midfielders they have brought in, last year their midfield was pathetic, but with the good forward line they have expect them to be a lot more competitive now.

Out of interest, did Daniel Kerr have explosive pace? For the life of me I can't remember. From what I remember of him is what we could model Tysons game on.

Yep, Kerr seemed pretty quick ... it might have been because he has small legs though and so they move quickly without generating much speed...

Tyson's not similar to Kerr, should try model his game on Mundy/Pendlebury
