Why is this game on Thursday night when there is a 6 game weekend coming up?
Television.

7 produces 77 games a year in a normal 22 game home and away season so 80 or 81 this year with gather round. They require so many Thursday night games to go with their 22 Friday nights + 22 Saturday nights + 22 Sundays and 3 public holidays (Easter Sunday, ANZAC and Queens birthday).

They need the ratings kick mid season.

Might make sense if it was fixtured fairly, with two teams coming off a bye ...

Instead we have Premiers off a bye against the (2022, when the fixture was created) 11th placed team off their third successive 6 day break. Now, which one is the Victorian team?

Its not really. As the ladder now stands we play:
6th
11th
15th
2nd
7th
9th
14th
10th
12th

Only 3 current top 8 teams. Perception v Reality.

3 of our remaining 4 away trips are very difficult - Essendon, Geelong and Fremantle. We should be able to take care of Carlton away.

That leaves home assignments against Adelaide, Giants, SUNS, Richmond and Collingwood.

The most negative possible assessment would have us dropping all 3 of those tough away games plus Adelaide and Collingwood at home - and even that still gets us to 16-7 which is certain top 4. We probably only have to pick off a couple of those more challenging games to get top 2.

We are going to have an off game or even an off patch, but at the moment I have a level of confidence in all those games.

The game against Essendon is vitally important. Need to get some good form going at the Big Concrete Bowl.

Colingwood here is also a very important game. Need to show that we can beat them. Will also go a long way to stitching up top 2.

Showdown obviously a really important game too. Will be finals like intensity.

These are the 3 big games.

If we drop a game at Geelong or Freo, Meh.

Freo have lost at home to North and Richmond this year. Geelong have lost at home to GWS. If we're on we'll smash both of those teams no matter where we play them.

Don’t see why so many are giving Essendon such credit. We should walk all over them following the bye and kick things off where we’ve left them.

7 of their 8 wins this year have come from the teams currently occupying the bottom 8 positions on the table. The only team in the bottom 8 positions they haven’t beaten is Sydney, as they are yet to play them.

They’ve had a dream run which is massively over inflating their position. We should run them off the park.

I don’t get it.

With 6 double-ups, the AFL could have simply split the tiers (Top, Mid, Bot).

The extra round makes sure the mandatory clashes will happen regardless.

For instance, our double-ups would have been: Richmond, Footscray, Carlton, St Kilda, Gold Coast, and West Lakes.

We've got 9 games left and I think 6 wins would guarantee top 2. 5 wins might still get it done. That's a great spot to be in when you could go 5-4 home and possibly still take top 2.

Our next 3 Ess, GC and Carlton are certainly all winnable, and if we reached 14 on the trot heading into the game against Collingwood here wouldn't that be an all time cracker of a game.

I do like the concept of dropping one before finals. Even the best teams always have. The Magpies teams of the 90s always had mid season slumps before rising in finals. But hey keep clocking up wins while we can.

Good point. Apart from a 34 round season, this would be a draw with the most integrity.

I was surprised to see that Collingwood don’t have double ups with Melbourne and Richmond this year. If these games aren’t “protected fixtures” it’s hard to see why your suggestion wouldn’t work.

2024 Fixture

The AFL in partnership with the SA Government is pleased to announce ‘Gather Round…. A Festival of Footy’ will be played across Round 4 of the 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The matches will run from Thursday 4 April through Sunday 7 April, with the fixture of matches to be announced later in the year.

After reviewing the success that was the inaugural Gather Round in 2023, Round 4 2024 was identified to enable greater fixture flexibility and greater ability to maximise interstate travel with the dates falling in the middle weekend of school holidays for Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

Announcing the dates early allows fans to start to book travel and accommodation ahead of the four days of matches.

Adelaide Oval will again be the centrepiece, with the regional venues and ticketing and premium event experience information to be confirmed at a later date.

Fans can register their interest in premium hospitality and experiences through the AFL’s official provider, the AFL Event Office, by visiting www.afl.com.au/eventoffice.

Good on them for getting the dates out, but releasing this info is probably not all that beneficial to many. ie. you wouldn't want to be buying accommodation in Adelaide and then find out your team is playing all the way out in the Barossa or McLaren Vale and you'd have to be annoyed at that. Plus you'd obviously want to know are you the Thursday night game or the Sunday twilight? So really the dates wont mean much to many until the fixture is out.

I mean the biggest benefit probably is to all of the tourism/activation operators that can get things planned and locked in.

Not a fan of the rotating bye, as I think it disadvantages teams coming off the break. On that basis, & the fact we are playing on the ‘G’, I think we will get rolled by Essendon then bounce back strongly the following week against the Suns.

It is if you are a family wanting to book flights and accommodation early before the prices rise.

The reason SA is putting taxpayers money into this is that is a carnival event with the benefits (accommodation, spending etc.) to the state coming from people coming from interstate staying for a few days not just for one game.

It's also strategic to announce dates (rather than games) early to get people to lock in a multi-day visit to Adelaide during Victorian school holidays in front of other alternatives that might prop up later...e.g. F1GP that might just fall on the same w/end.

Bloody hell its an hours drive from your CBD hotel for either region, its not as if its impossible to get there.

If they want to have a day at the wine regions and not drive back to Adelaide, it wouldn't be too hard or expensive to cancel one nights accommodation in the city and book a night in the region when the fixture comes out in late October. Yeah leave it to March and you might miss out.

Seems a long way in advance to announce but I guess some people may opt out of a summer trip for this one, cost of everything pressures and so on.

Its not about football fans having 10 months to plan, its really about regional towns making a pitch to the government, assessing and picking a ground or two outside of Adelaide and planning for infrastructure improvements, planning entertainment events around the venue and also working out if Norwood gets two games or a second SANFL ground is used and what infrastructure spend is needed.

The Mayor of Norwood said next year he wants to shut down the Parade all the way to Portrush Road and having a big street party festival and attracting 100,000 people to it and not necessarily football people, like you get at the Tour Down Under start line. That takes a fair bit of lead time planning.

Ok but that doesn't require a public announcement of specific dates, especially when we already know the event is on for the next 3 years. Surely council-state govt meet on a regular basis to discuss such things.

FWIW, I hope Norwood do shutdown the Parade for this one.

This is a government and the AFL. They all employ so many spin doctors they were always going to have a big press release.

The public get some clarity when its on - eastern state travellers in particular - and councils and businesses do, who might lobby for a piece of the action, also get clarity. Some businesses would go straight to their local councils after the announcement and start lobbying for involvement. The government and AFL isn't going to email every business in the state, when a presser does the job.
