As it looks like you are going to have to mortgage the house soon to pay for a Grand Final ticket.

And if Geelong keeps making the Granny , they are gonna send their diehard fans broke.:D

THE cost of thousands of AFL Grand Final seats set aside for rank and file footy fans has tripled in just 10 years.

A Herald Sun investigation has revealed a ticket to the MCG premiership decider costing $88 in season 2000 will now fetch as much as $270.

In 2000, all public seats to the Grand Final cost $88. In 1990, it was just $35

Seems to me the increase is in line with almost everything else. House prices have followed a pretty similar trend.

At least we should get better entertainment than what you got for your money back then:

No way

I'd rather listen to Angry than whatever Australian Idols rejects they seem to trot out these days.

Who else is remembered form gran final entertainment as much as AA ?

They could double the price of tickets again for me if they freeze out the corporates

Personally I don't care how much they charge, much more annoying is the fact that it is extremely difficult for the vast majority of club members to even get a ticket. The money spinning BS that goes on with all the clubs being allocated tickets to sell etc and the ludicrous number of seats that are retained by the AFL to give to so called 'A' listers is ridiculous. INO the grandfinal tickets should go to competing club members in the first instance. There would be very few examples where two clubs would have enough members that actually go to sell out the G. Then the AFL can have the dregs of whats left.

12000 seats each for the 2 clubs competing in the GF in a stadium with a 90000 plus capacity is just a joke. Should be at least 30000 seats each. If clubs can't survive financially without selling of their token GF tickets to travel agents then they have deep issues anyway.

Joke.

Exactly right. In fact Angry did a great performance that day belting out that tune. It's more the batmobile & sitting next to De Castella as well as the faces on the other 'celebs' on the ground that day that threw the whole thing into an urban punching bag.
But as someone once said, one thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.

So the AFL and MCC members who helped pay for the stadium shouldn't get a seat at the biggest game? Without the AFL and MCC members the MCG wouldn't be nearly as big as it is.

There's always a way, I don't know anyone who has really wanted a ticket who has missed seeing their team play in the GF

Of course ticket prices have gone up the last 10 years

Have you guys heard of PSL's (Personal Seat Licences)? It's a big money grab over here in the States when a team builds a new Stadium.

If you want season tickets for a team that has a new Stadium you have to pay between $1000 - $20,000, depending on where you want to sit, to guarantee the right to purchase season tickets.

I gave up my New England Patriots season tickets this season. The Patriots don't have PSL's but $169 for each game was too much for me. I had 3 tickets so the invoice was a little over $5,100. Playoff ticket prices are set by the NFL so my $169 ticket becomes a $199 ticket.

Everyone who has ever been to the G helped pay for the upgrade, to go further anyone who has ever watched the AFL on tv has helped pay for the upgrade.

The other poster is correct should be a minimum of 30k for each competing teams supporters...minimum.

I've been fortunate enough to attend the past three grand finals - 2007 via corporate tickets (thanks dad!), 2008 via AFL membership and last year via the Geelong club member ballot. I'd entered the ballot all three years, but last year was the only time of the three I'd scored tickets through it and subsequently the first time I'd been sitting at a grand final with Geelong club members.

My tickets last year were in the second back row of the Olympic Stand and my view of the game was terrible. It's such a steep staircase to get up there, and while it was fine for me, there were a number of elderly supporters around me and I imagine it would have been a huge struggle for them to make it up to the top. When you enter the ballot, you have the option of ticking whether you need a wheelchair accessible seat, but there's no way to say you will only accept ground level tickets. I know a lot of St Kilda members had a similar problem last year when many elderly or mobility impaired supporters were allocated standing room tickets.

Of course I was thrilled just to be there, but after spending the previous two grand finals in corporate/AFL areas, it was really a stark reminder of how badly run of the mill club members are treated on GF day.

Oh, the price I paid to see an ant-sized Paul Chapman kick the winning goal? $161. Last month I went to a Premier League match between West Ham and Manchester City and sat four rows from the front for about half that price.

I love Rose Tattoo's early stuff, but all I could say that day was WTF.

$270 wouldn't be unreasonable if only they gave members of the competing clubs first option on the tickets. By freezing fans out, it drives up the black market price, which drives up the AFL price...

Why is there no mention of standing room in the article? Standing room these days seems almost like a dirty secret that the MCC doesn't want you to know about.

Are you saying $161 for the AFL's showcase game is excessive?

How much is it to go to Old Trafford or Anfield? I went to a regular season game at Giants Stadium and tickets with a face of value of $80 cost $300, compared to that the GF is cheap as chips.

To sit in the second back row of the Ponsford Stand, yes. Of course I was happy to pay it, and will do so again this year if we make it and I have the chance to get the ticket. But just because there are tens of thousands of members that would pay the price, doesn't mean it's reasonable.

I wouldn't have a clue how much Old Trafford or Anfield are, but I went to a match at Upton Park and paid about $90 for the most expensive seat in the house. I have friends that have been to NBA and NFL games and paid roughly the same for excellent seats.
