Why did Collingwood change their jumper in 2001? Serious question, I'd like to know.

I'm still baffled by this too. What did Eddie find so wrong with this? If they were still wearing this version there would be no need for the Saints to wear a clash guernsey.

Its irrelevant why they changed their HOME jumper, the fact is that they did.

No, really now I'm interested.

Why shit on 100 years of tradition? Is Eddie as bad as Andrew Demitiriou in the fact that he want's to be remembered so much he'll screw up tradition so at least he'll be remember of the person who did it?

Was never a clash with St.Kilda until Collingwood decided to reverse their primary jumper from black stripes on a white jumper in 2001. Of course it would be wrong to expect St.Kilda and every other team in the AFL to not take into serious consideration the incredible nine years of Collingwood tradition in their current jumper.
Even when Collingwood changed there was still no clash with St Kilda untill about 2 years later they changed their home jumper yet again

I seriously don't give a shit who wears what this weekend, I'd just like to know why a club that guards their tradition so sacredly completely changed their only ever jumper in 2001.

Can anyone answer this? Did the club give the members no explanation at all?

no one should wear a clash jumper for a grand final. this is just ridiculas. typical of the afl

Idiotic comment. Absolutely idiotic. Reading the above comment, makes you wonder about the sanity of the poster. Mind-boggingly stupid comment.

The Grand Final is the most important game of the year, and therefore it is FAR more important a club wears their clash strip for the Grand Final (if there is a clash, of curse) than it is for a mere H&A game.

There are millions watching on TV, and 44 players who need the colours scheme on the ground to be as distinct as possible so as to not make a fatal error.

To suggest that the most important game of the year is the one game wear a clash strip shouldn't be worn is the height of stupidity and ignorance. If you could only choose one game of the year where a clash strip must be worn, then the Grand Final would obviously be it.

Or is the rule, Collingwood wears what they want and the others have to work around it?

You pretty much nailed it. Such is life at the top

No idea, and I wouldn't actually mind knowing myself.

I think you're drawing a long bow saying it was 'completely' changed though.

Except that neither team should require a clash jumper.
That a blind man can tell from the front which jumper is which.
Change the socks to Tri-Colour as well as you're done.

Only reason they're whinging is for when the ball is on the deck the players wouldnt know who is who... But once again the socks would change that fact.

Do you think we may be able to have the 1966 Grand Final re-mastered by the AFL. Did they not know about clash strips in 1966.

I have watched it about 50 times on Footy Marathon and have no idea what is going - did St. Kilda win ?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Clash strips are the biggest scam the AFL have inflicted on the footy public !!!

Collingwood have worn their traditional jumper (which is currently their clash strip) a few times this year, when designated to by the AFL. I think they did on Anzac day, IIRC.

If St.Kilda was the team on top of the ladder and Collingwood was instructed to wear their "white, with black stripes" jumper then they would, because they wouldn't have a chocie, just like they had no choice when they wore it this year a few times.

But given that they are minor-premiers, it's fair, reasonable and sensible that St.Kilda wear a clash strip on Saturday.

Not really. It's the difference between predominantly black and predominantly white. Fairly significant.

Amazed that no one has any reason as to why.

West Coast wore theirs in the 2005 and 2006 Grand Finals

Actually it's our 'Away' jumper as opposed to a 'clash' jumper.

However, as we've worn our Royal Blue 'Wings' jumper in all 5 Grandfinals, I'd be pretty annoyed if we ever wear our current Home jumper (or any other version) in a GrandFinal. Eagles should always wear the Royal Blue in grannies.

Unless we ever played a GF against the Bulldogs - obvious clash, so only then shoud the Eagles wear a different guernsey. So hopefully we never play the Doggies in a GF.

Again - Collingwood wore a WHITE jumper in 1966!!!

Why don't people understand this?? the current jumper is DIFFERENT and CLASHES - the Traditional jumper they should, and could wear, doesnt.

If Collingwood wore their TRADITIONAL jumper - then the Saints could wear their's with no problems

As many had said, the higher ranked team should wear the uniform of there choice. The reality is it hasn't always been the case.

West Coast wore the White shorts in '92, '94 and '05.

Geelong finished ahead of WC in '92 but WC beat them during the finals to go straight to the GF. '94 and '05 WC had the greater right to play in the Royal blue shorts yet were either denied by teh AFL or lost the coin toss.

Our tradition is black and white stripes. That tradition continues.

I'm sure the club gave an explanation at the time to the one or two members who bothered to ask.

Our clash strip isnt too bad and we have had alot worse although I cant see our home jumper with white shorts actually clash. I really could not care one little bit and neither would the players. Just win the bloody thing.

The point is both sides could be happy.
Collingwood with there white clash (which is as Collingwood as their home black kit) and St Kilda in the traditional black.

The AFL have successfully avoided the possibility of satisfying the greater majority because of technicalities and for pure fear of Eddies huffing and puffing about having to wear a jumper Collingwood supporters allready love so that Saints fans can see their team in a Jumper they love.

It shouldn' be that tough.
Though I am one of the few who don't mind the white Saints kit and Collingwood do deserve the right for being 1st... just saying there was a better option.

I don't think anyone has had a problem with the Pies current strip and the Saint's predominant red strip from the past. These were the guernesy's of the two clubs in 2001:

StKilda-2000.gif

and the guernsey's of 2002:

StKilda-2002.gif

Now bear with me, if you look really closely you'll see one club kept the same guernsey where the other club changed their guernsey, thus creating a clash. Have you figured it out yet Saints fans/bandwagoners? YOU created the clash between the clubs. Suck it up!!!!!

Top team deserves the home jumper. I love our old traditional strip, but I love whiny St Kilda supporters whinging about non-issues even better:D
