This. I mean WTF? I was astounded when I finally realised these green signs in the middle of the bloody road were tram stops. There's a non-platform stop right at the street corner where I'm staying, but I'll keep walking the extra 30m to the platform station around the corner thank you very much.

more daunting is getting off the trams that stop in the middle of the road. 99% of people stop for the tram but you get people who are either tourists, shit drivers or general dickheads that drive straight through.

i gave a couple of cars a whack on the boot as they drove past the tram as i was getting off.

can't believe more people don't get hit.

i agree with your premise re: drivers who drive through. its a foreign concept for non melburnians and tourists alike. how does one make sure all drivers are aware of this rule however? if melburnians (some) break the law, what chance do tourists have?

whenever driving through tram city i cross fingers each time i see a tram stop.

A big sign pops out from the tram and says "stop". It's kinda hard to miss.

Unless your watching the road like your suppose to. Its a sign that comes out of nowhere, and unless you know the rules in Melbourne, I would not expect everyone to know that when the tram stops, a stop sign will then appear

I guess. Lights flash and a sign comes out so I never had a problem noticing it while still watching the road. I suppose it helps to have a little bit of understanding of different road conditions before going to a new place. I always get caught at tolls in Sydney.

The lights only flash to let you know the tram is stopping, and the stop sign doesnt actually activate until the doors open, so really cars need to know that you must stop BEFORE the tram does to give time for them to open the doors. I think something needs to be done just to be on the safe side, not just for drivers who dont know but for people getting off the tram and not realising/ forgetting that you have to check first that you dont get run over

person may see it, but may not understand what it means.

i think the answer might be arms that extend across and from the tram with stop signs. you know, like when you drive down a road that has roadworks and the bloke (or female at times) holes teh sign out at a 80-90% angle when someone is driving through a bit quickly.

on the new trams there is no stop sign. the lights just flash.

was just down at my brothers house and my niece was doing maths homework. she's in year 5. in the second of three maths classes in her school. two of the questions i noticed she was doing were "If Johnny has 2 dollars and spends 75 cents how much does he have left?" and "Colour in two thirds of the rabbit"?

Is that seriously the standard that is being set? or am i just looking back thinking we were doing a lot tougher stuff in my day (i was year 5 in 1995). admittedly i was real good at maths (it should be called arithmetic, not maths, but that's another issue) when i was younger and was always in the top few of my year, but surely that's not what the kids who were sitting in the middle of the year were doing in their class?

That's amazing. In grade 1 in the mid 90s we were doing division (admittedly a private school) and then after that I moved to a state school, skipped grade 2 and even then in grade 3 myself and one of the other kids were doing binary (and n-ary) number systems.

200-75 in grade 5 is ridiculous.

I don't really mind myki to be honest..

Myki is ok but the system has some flaws. Like short term guests of Melbourne have to buy a myki card.

You can't top up your myki on a tram. So if you realise you have no money on your myki once you're on the tram you have to get off and top up at a 7/11. And you HAVE to do this on my tram because inspectors are always on that tram line.

Often the touch off points aren't working so I get charged the maximum trip for not being able to touch off.

Not to mention myki is essentially useless when going to the footy. Getting off at Richmond station results in a massive swell of people, meaning they don't get you to swipe off anyway. After the footy, you can't really swipe on, meaning you may not be able to get out of your station on the other end (depending on where you get off).

People who catch buses for one stop i mean are you really that lazy?
True story........waiting for a tram in St Kilda Road last week, there was a few delays because of the work going on. Young woman next to me, bitched and moaned for the entire 20 minutes Whilst waiting for the tram that she was going to be late for work. Tram arrives, she gets on....gets off very next stop which was less than a couple of hundred metres away. WTF?....... Thinking she must have got on the wrong tram, and she must be getting off to catch the right one, i was suprised to see her be greeted by another woman, and observed them walk into the Toll Building.
Now that is lazy....she could have walked it in less than 5 minutes, instead she waited 20 mins for the tram

Don't know where else I can post this but ...

Bloody Rolf Harris, who would of thought?

A friend once got taxi home from the pub which was a 5 minute walk, also it was in a small country town so it wasn't because of a safety issue or anything.
How pissed was he? A five minute walk when you are blowing .3 can often end up being a little more complicated than you initially thought it would be.

The laziest i've ever been with a taxi was about a 1km journey. In my defence, it was like 35 degrees, I have plantar fasciitis, and my ankles are pretty screwed too, so I may not have made the journey :p. Still felt bad doing it though.

Nah he wasn't that drunk at all.

I see your point though, especially if you are on holidays in an unfamiliar location, I've actually gotten completely lost doing this a couple of times being only a very short distance from where I was staying.

Ended up finding a Taxi to take me back and had ventured a looong way from home.
