I don't think its so much a need. Surely more of a reward for the service he provided this season. Plus its a bit of a vote of confidence in him which can't hurt if we're going forward with him in the squad.

I can understand the club wanting to upgrade Walker. But I have no clue as to why they want to elevate Burbury...

I agree, and I was a Burbury fan, just not dominant enough for me, he had that 6 goal game then not much after that.
He had some injury issues but he left me a little disappointed.

Interesting comment........

"Not true, one first round pick will do it. Rous on Trade Radio this afternoon said the Cats are still in with Collingwood. If you think it over, two clubs were chosen for a reason including the ability in theory to get the job done. Let's just say I have some fairly close perspective here Ben. Adams will end up at Collingwood but that's only because the Cats still have just one first round pick and have it earmarked for another. Two genuine deals acceptable to two players but each requiring a first round pick to a club. Adams preferenced two clubs not one for a reason. He not only grew up in Geelong, went to St Joey's and played TAC for the Falcons, he actually followed Geelong and Selwood was his favourite player. There is audio of a 2011 Addy interview with Adams and his family prior to the draft that confirms what has escaped most media reporting. However Adams management knowing something about Geelong's other interest here also had a responsibility to get a deal that gets their client back to Vic and the Cats have ended up having to choose between the two players. Had they freed up another first round pick Adams could have gone to the Cats that's how close it came in the end. Expect a provisional announcement on Adams to Collingwood probably this week if not breaking tomorrow and then movement on the other. There is another reason other than Adams the three clubs are so closely connecting and the Adams camp was well aware and privy to same. Cheers."

A lot of cloaks and daggers in that last part. I wonder what the "another reason" might be and whether that refers to us looking at another player from GWS? Seems odd though that we would preference Shaw over Adams if there is nothing else to it.

Wait, where is their third one coming from? 3, 17 and what?
I thought they had 3 for some reason..... no idea why.. but I'd seen it somewhere.. unless they are thinking they get one for Dal and I just misread something which is highly possible

Where's that from vinum coupe?

If true that we've preferenced getting Shaw over Adams, my rage will be greater than I expected.
It's apparently from a trading thread somewhere on facebook and that comment is by a guy named Maverick Weller. (could be the same one)

But the suggestion seems to be that pick 15 is being used on someone specific in the draft that Pheonix knows about.

Longer would be nice but this says it all for me:
“I know it’s a big call but he’s got a little bit of Stephen Silvagni about him, just the way he gets in and physically competes with his opposition and gives nothing away. A fine performance from him; really good to see a key defender find form and shut down a very, very talented player.”
- AFL academy development manager Michael Ablett speaking about Gardiner completely nullifying Power forward Jesse Hogan in last year’s National Championships.
We need this and he should be our number 1 priority with that first round pick.

Good call. Though I like the sound of this Michael Ablett, anyone know anything about him. Rookie perhaps?

So not on Shaw?

Unsure if serious or not.

I've really got no idea Shane.

Just guessing from everything I've read that pick 15 is getting used on someone other than Shaw or Adams. And Geelong are obviously still trying to get a deal done with the Pies. I can't see how it's possible.

I dont know where the Smedts and 32 rumour came from.

I did get told that both Adams and Shaw nominated the cats... but we are unlikely to get both

This is from a person I know from twitter who as I have mentioned claims to know... but I'm not sure if he actually does know.

He was on the Heath Shaw thing before anyone else I will say

They do have 21, but they want 3 inside 20.
Potentially that's where I am getting mucked up... either way if they are getting another 1st round pick (and the other rumour is armatige for Longer so not a pick) it would be 4 picks in the top 21... still a fair base to go from

Does anyone else feel anxious that Geelong's competition (Hawks, Sydney etc) seem to be getting the edge this trading period? I don't subscribe to "trading for trading's sake", but somehow those teams manage to fill their needs/gaps with talented, durable players in the right age bracket while Geelong are left with ...not much (so far at least). Also, I'm not sure this isn't the way of the future. Relying on the draft is no guarantee of a team all peaking at the same time with the right balance and number of games in them in order to have a shot at grabbing a flag. So many other factors are crucial these days - particularly injuries. Probably totally premature to say this, but where is Geelong's improvement going to come from next year when compared with those teams mentioned above?
Question is where will hawthorn Fremantle Sydney's improvement come from to compete with the Geelong youth that will improve? We were 5 points away from the premiers with several key players out against their fit side. We have Guthrie who will improve, vardy will improve, Christensen will improve, Duncan will improve, motlop may well go the next level, thurlow will probably make best 22, Simpson mcintosh if we get them fit. We have stacks of improvement, hawthorn don't have any to come and either do Fremantle, just look at the names of their youth and where all their performing players come from
